Reciting a First World War poem has earned Simon Depoix, Head of German at Gordon’s School, first place in a national poetry competition.
Mr Depoix and some students from the school in West End, Woking had to choose a poem from a list of First World War poets for the ‘Poetry By Heart’ competition.
His rendition of ‘There Will Come Soft Rains’ by Sara Teasdale won him the top spot for staff while student Darcy Watson was awarded ‘Highly Commended’.
The competition aims to inspire those in schools and colleges to learn and recite poems by heart, showing that they inwardly understand and enjoy the poem. Judges make their decision based on videos sent to them of recitals.
“I never thought I would win” said Mr Depoix, adding: “I thought it would be a bit of fun”.
