After their incredible win at last year’s VII Millfield and Desert Springs European Schools Team Championships in Spain, Gordon’s golfers were keen to prove that it wasn’t just a one off.
Only one member of last year’s trip could make the annual tournament at the Spanish golf resort, as South of England Golf were having a training camp in Spain at the same time. However, Gordon’s in West End, Woking still managed to clinch a third place in the competition.
Day One of the Tournament saw Evie Kircher and Sid Beadle scoring an impressive 42 points and Alexandra Phelps and Sophie Mardani, 33 points. A total of 75 points left the team in 7th place and nine points of the top team Bradfield with 84 points.
Day Two was an outstanding day. This time it was Alexandra Phelps and Sophie Mardani’s turn to score heavy with 42 points and Evie Kircher and Sid Beadle came in again with a 39 point round. 81 points maintained their 7th place position with the singles to come on the last day. 156 points left the Gordon’s golfers 13 points off the lead of 169 shared by Whitgift and Bradfield.
Day Three, the final round was individual Stableford. The top two scores on this final day were all important and Sid Beadle and Evie Kircher proved to be the highest scorers on the final day. Sid Beadle playing off handicap 23 scored 44 points with a gross round of 17 over par. Evie Kircher had a great round scoring a gross 6 over par round off handicap 8, recording 41 points.
This left the team on a staggering 241 points total overall, 3 points less than last year’s winning total of 244 which won the event by 16 points in 2019. The final scores came in and Gordon’s missed out on reclaiming their title by just seven points.
1st Whitgift 248 points
2nd Loretto 244 points
3rd Gordon’s 241 points
An incredible effort by the Gordon’s Team making up many points on the final day and finishing in the top three in this top schools European event. The team actually scored 85 points which was top by two points for this round.
The Individual Gross event was very competitive and Gordon’s finished with two girls in the top three. Sarah Mardani carded a 75, four over par round playing off handicap 2 and finished 2nd in the girls event. Evie Kircher’s round of 77, six over par recorded a third place for her battling performance on the last day.
Sarah Mardani joined the party on the Sunday, this following the cancellation of the South of England Training trip. Sarah competed in all three days of the tournament and on her own carded incredible stableford scores of 31, 35 and 37. Her gross scores were 7 over, 3 over and four over, a great achievement.
Head of Golf at Gordon’s, David Mathews commented: “Well done to the Gordon’s golf team for their continued success, all of the hard work and application training over the winter months has been worth it.”
He added: “We will definitely return next year to see if we can claim back the title!”
