Former Millfield Music pupil Anna Im (2012-2014, Warner) has won the 10th annual Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand. The 21-year-old South Korean violinist received NZ$40,000 in prize money and a recording contract with the Atoll label to produce an album, as well as a tour across New Zealand and Australia and the opportunity to take part in a professional development programme for winning the competition.
The competition was started in 2001 by New Zealand jewellery entrepreneur Sir Michael Hill, himself a keen amateur violinist.
While at Millfield, Anna studied under Clive Hughes, Millfield’s full-time Head of Strings, whilst participating in a busy programme of ensemble music, including a significant focus on chamber music. Anna complimented her music schedule with archery and dance as well as house competitions in drama and swimming. Anna is now studying for a Bachelor in Music, majoring in Violin, at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
Millfield is significantly expanding its Chamber Music provision for all instrumentalists, which Anna has said is a crucial opportunity for musicians at Millfield to take advantage of:
Anna says, “Playing chamber music has helped me to really feel the music a lot deeper and directly, and I would advise all Millfield pupils to take advantage of the opportunities available at Millfield Music School. I have so much love and respect for my teachers, particularly Millfield’s Head of Strings Mr Clive Hughes, and I am extremely grateful to them for such caring, endless support, positivity, and dedication.”
Millfield’s Director of Music, Matthew Cook, says, “We are incredibly proud of Anna’s achievement, and I know current Millfield musicians will be inspired by her success. To have such a dedicated, passionate and highly-skilled musician come from Millfield is truly an honour. We cannot wait to see where Anna’s career takes her next – she has an incredibly bright future ahead!”
