Dean Close Prep School pupils qualify for the National Championships
8th March 2019

Thursday 28th February, 15 Dean Close Preparatory School pupils travelled St Edward’s School, Cheltenham for the gruelling final race of the Cheltenham Primary Cross-Country League.

A gallant team braved the wind, showers and slippery conditions to charge around a hilly 2km course in fields of around 100 runners. The U10 girls began the day very strongly with all three runners finishing inside the top 26. This was especially remarkable as two of them were running up an age group. One of these: Verity Lilley came a superb 8th place to qualify to run for Cheltenham at the County Cup two days later.

The day ended with an excellent run from Lucas Preece in the U11 boys’ race who came home 6th, which meant three DCPS runners qualified for the District team.

Soon afterwards the three qualifying pupils (Verity, Arthur and Lucas) ran at the County Championships wearing the sought after red Cheltenham vests. Lucas finished an excellent 19th helping his team to defend their title. Verity (running a year up) came back from an early fall to surge through the field and finish 13th also narrowly qualifying for the Nationals. Arthur topped off the day, executing a well-planned race to storm to victory in the U10 boys’ race and be crowned County Champion, also qualifying for the Nationals on the 23rd March.
