SACPA Half Day Seminar: Safeguarding standards for working with children in international settings, 10.09.21

Course Outline

This course will look at some of the key principles related to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and will invite participants to consider how to apply these core expectations within their own environments and in accordance with the applicable laws and guidance.

Training topics will include:

  • Legal frameworks
  • Signs and symptoms of abuse
  • Specific forms of abuse including:
    • Child Sexual Exploitation and child Criminal Exploitation
    • Grooming (including online)
    • Peer on peer abuse
  • Principles for the safer recruitment of staff
  • Identifying, recording and reporting abuse.

Learning outcomes:

  • Increase knowledge of how to safeguard and promote the welfare of children
  • Improve awareness of signs and symptoms of abuse
  • Promote understanding of specific forms of abuse
  • Know what to do and how to report and record any concerns.

Audience: 

  • All practitioners working with children, young people, DSL/DSO, DDSL, Safeguarding Manager/Lead in international settings.

Speaker: Dale Wilkins, Director of Safeguarding, Professional Development and Accreditation

Dale joined BSA Group during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s accredited training programme. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for Sacpa and BSA Group, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter, and the Annual Safeguarding conference. He has completed “Training for Trainers” with NSPCC and was for 10 years a multi-agency safeguarding trainer for Dudley Safeguarding Children Board.

For 31 years Dale was practitioner in boarding schools, and a BSA course tutor since 1998. He was also for 10 years a school Designated Safeguarding Lead. Dale is currently developing new safeguarding products for Sacpa.

 

Speaker: Robin Watts, Child Protection and Safeguarding consultant

A former detective with the Metropolitan Police, Robin specialised as a child abuse investigator and worked as a trainer/instructor/consultant, training Police and Social Workers how to investigate Child Abuse from initial referral to a conclusion. He trains police officers, social workers and education professionals in the Child Abuse field, and specialises in the interviewing of children, and the assessment and investigative approach and safer recruitment training both in UK and internationally.

Robin is a worldwide specialist in delivering child abuse awareness training to schools, charities and volunteers and training the designated people in organisations in an advanced level of child protection. He has delivered training to and consulted with in excess of 1,000 schools in the UK and all over the world. He has delivered safeguarding training, and assisted in the child protection procedures, policies, and practices. He also helps schools to get ready for the Ofsted inspection process and, to date, all schools he has worked with have achieved ‘Outstanding’ in the safeguarding arena.
