In a school of our size and ethos, the Senior Deputy Head’s role is to assist the Head in her leadership of the school, to oversee (with the Deputy Head Pastoral) the development and wellbeing of each and every girl, and provide wise counsel and guidance to all staff. The role is wide ranging and brings with it whole school areas of responsibility. The ability to retain a sense of humour under pressure and maintain a lightness of touch when driven to do otherwise are essential to the success of this role. The Deputy Head has administrative support through their own PA.
The Senior Deputy Head is part of the Senior Leadership Team comprising of the Head, Bursar, Deputy Head Pastoral and Director of External Relations. The Senior Deputy Head is a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) and is supported in their pastoral role by the Deputy Head Pastoral who acts as Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
The Senior Deputy Head is expected to play a full part in the daily life of a boarding school including evenings and weekends. In recognition of this role accommodation is provided by the school. It is expected that the Senior Deputy Head will teach approximately seven periods a week and is entitled to a period of 48 hours ‘downtime’ a week which they should take in conjunction with the duties and downtime allocated to the Deputy Head Pastoral and the responsibilities of the Head. The Senior Deputy Head will be the SLT member on duty every other weekend during term time (alternating with the Deputy Head Pastoral) and take a share of the DSL duty cover during Leave Out weekends (SIFLO). The Senior Deputy Head is expected to be present in school in the days after the end of term and in days leading up to the start of term at times agreed with the Head. The Senior Deputy Head is also expected to be present on the day before, the day of and the day after the release of A Level and GCSE grades.
