DESCRIPTION:Date: February 04\, 2025\nTime: 10:30 – 12:30\nCost: HIEDA/BSA Member Rate: £135\, Non-member Rate: £270*\nAudience: All Boarding staff  and those who wish to have an understanding of teenagers brain development and the impact of these changes on their mental health\, learning and relationships\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – half day seminar\n\n\nCourse outline: \nWe know that\, other than during the first three years of life\, the brain goes through the biggest change in its development during adolescence. This is a critical time in teens’ lives and as adults\, we have a crucial role to play in supporting them to develop into healthy successful adults. \nThis workshop combines the latest understanding of neuroscience and developmental psychology with practical strategies to help attendees understand the changes teenagers are going through\, and what adults can do to support them. \nTraining topics will include: \nThe session covers the main changes in the brain during the teenage years: \n\nHormones\nRisky behaviour\nThe social brain\nSleep\nThe role of adults in supporting healthy brain development\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nTo have a better understanding of the developmental changes in the teenage brain\nTo explore the links with these changes and the vulnerability to developing mental health issues.\nPractical\, evidence based strategies to support healthy brain development.\nTo understand the importance of relationships in a healthy boarding environment.\n\nBook now \n\nSpeaker: \n  \nLisa Thomson\, Charlie Waller Trust \nLisa has had a long career in a variety of Mental Health settings within the NHS. She originally trained as a Mental Health Nurse in 1990 and subsequently worked in inpatient and community settings with adults\, children\, young people and their families. She completed a Masters in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and a post graduate diploma in Evidence Based Practice leading to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England.

SUMMARY:Understanding Executive Functioning Skills: Supporting boarders with life management\, emotions and goals
DESCRIPTION:Date: February 06\, 2025\nTime: 09:30 – 11:30\nCost: BSA Full Member – £135\, BSA Affiliate Member – £170 \, Non-member – £270\nAudience: Head\, SLT\, Inclusion Lead\, Head of Boarding\, Teaching and Boarding staff\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – Half-Day Seminar\n\n\nCourse outline: \nThe aim of this half day seminar is to provide an opportunity to learn more about the importance of the management system of the brain – known as executive functioning skills and to consider strategies that can be used to support pupils.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe three main areas of working memory\, cognitive flexibility (flexible thinking) and inhibitory control (including self-control) will be unpacked. When people struggle with executive function\, it impacts them at home\, in school\, and in life because the skills involved support goal setting\, planning\, and completing tasks. \nExecutive function is responsible for many skills including: paying attention; organizing\, planning\, and prioritising; starting tasks and staying focused on them to completion; understanding different points of view; regulating emotions and self-monitoring. Executive functioning skills usually develop quickly in early childhood and into the teen years but are still developing into the mid-20s. Some people struggle with EF\, and this can cause challenges during childhood\, as a teenager and young adult. \nWe will hear from an EF expert about what executive function skills are and how they impact our lives. We will also hear directly from school staff about adjustments and proactive work that has made a positive impact in their settings. \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAttending this half day seminar will help delegates increase their knowledge and understanding of the importance of supporting executive functioning for all pupils\, but particularly for those who have weaker EF function. Delegates will hear about a range of practical strategies\, to adopt\, adapt or use and will leave with the understanding and confidence to build on current practice. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nDr Katharine Sharpe \nKatharine is a Chartered Educational Psychologist and experienced teacher who works in a Prep School as Assistant Head (Pastoral) and Head of Learning Support. After graduating with a Psychology degree\, she started her career as a primary teacher before completing post-graduate training to qualify as an Educational Psychologist. Katharine spent 15 years working for a large local authority Psychology Service before becoming Head of Learning Support at Caterham Prep School. Her Doctoral research at UCL examined the impact of mindset on the literacy attainments of Key Stage 3 pupils. Katharine maintains a private psychology practice alongside her teaching role. She is the IAPS SEND Subject Advisor and sits on the ISC Cross-Association SEND Advisory Group.

He is a WRAW Master Practitioner\, trained by the Wellbeing Project\, and offers life coaching\, diagnostic assessments\, workshops and seminars. He is also Education Development Director for Performance Learning\, an NSPCC Associate and an IAPS Consultant\, as well as a Director of Wiltshire & Swindon Sport and Team Removals.

Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East.
