A bystander is someone who witnesses bullying but does not get involved. Being a bystander is easy – they aren’t the perpetrator and they are not the one outwardly being harmed or the target of the attack. \nIn every situation it’s necessary to have somebody who does something that prevents or reduces the bullying they see – an upstander. Upstanders are people who comes to the aid of another person who is being bullied and shows them kindness. \nMoving from being a bystander to becoming an upstander will not happen overnight. A government adviser\, he has been commissioned four times by the English and Welsh administrations to produce national anti-bullying resources and training for schools\, and is currently supporting the Welsh Government’s revision of Rights\, Respect\, Equality. He is author of How to Stop Homophobic and Biphobic Bullying and That’s So Gay!. In 2025 he was awarded an MBE for services to education\, justice\, health and government.
