Formerly Deputy Minister in the Maldives\, she led national reforms in child protection policy and legislation. Internationally\, she has worked with UNICEF\, Save the Children\, and Lumos Foundation on child sexual abuse\, exploitation\, and systems reform across South Asia and beyond. An academic and practitioner\, Mariya has published widely and specialises in trauma-informed\, survivor-centred\, and systems-based safeguarding approaches. \n\nDavid Walker FTIOB\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director\, BSA/TIOB \nDavid Walker has over 20 years’ experience in boarding education\, having worked in a variety of schools across the UK and Africa. His career includes leadership roles in both senior and prep school settings\, complemented by service as a prep school governor and trustee of a multi-academy trust. Before joining the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-educational independent school in the South-East\, where he oversaw student welfare and pastoral care. She has also been a keynote speaker at international and UK schools. \nHer work includes speaking to local communities and schools about her recovery journey from anorexia\, alongside her recent work with JenUp. JenUp is a non-profit organisation based around early intervention and prevention of eating disorders. She provides students\, parents\, and teachers with various types of workshops on eating disorder awareness\, disordered eating\, body image\, nutrition\, and how to support someone in need. A bystander is someone who witnesses bullying but does not get involved. Being a bystander is easy – they aren’t the perpetrator and they are not the one outwardly being harmed or the target of the attack. \nIn every situation it’s necessary to have somebody who does something that prevents or reduces the bullying they see – an upstander. Upstanders are people who comes to the aid of another person who is being bullied and shows them kindness. \nMoving from being a bystander to becoming an upstander will not happen overnight. A government adviser\, he has been commissioned four times by the English and Welsh administrations to produce national anti-bullying resources and training for schools\, and is currently supporting the Welsh Government’s revision of Rights\, Respect\, Equality. He is author of How to Stop Homophobic and Biphobic Bullying and That’s So Gay!. In 2025 he was awarded an MBE for services to education\, justice\, health and government.
