This seminar is designed to support staff who are new to boarding by complementing their school-based induction and providing essential context around the key responsibilities and expectations of the role. \nBy equipping new boarding staff with a solid understanding of the principles\, legal context\, and practicalities of boarding care\, schools can quickly establish confident\, capable teams who enjoy their duties and provide high-quality support to the young people in their care. \nThe session will explore the Duty of Care framework\, safeguarding\, roles and boundaries\, and how to meet the everyday needs of boarders. Delegates are encouraged to familiarise themselves in advance with their school’s boarding handbook and relevant boarding-related materials from their school’s website. \nTraining Topics: \n\nSafeguarding and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding:\nAn overview of legal and inspection requirements\, with a focus on current safeguarding expectations in boarding practice.\nMeeting the Needs of Boarders:\nPractical case studies to explore common scenarios in boarding life and how to manage them effectively and empathetically.\nUnderstanding Your Role in Boarding:\nDiscussion around the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents—and your own expectations as a member of the pastoral team.\nWorking Safely and Looking After Yourself:\nTips and guidance on maintaining your wellbeing\, working safely\, and finding fulfilment in your boarding role.\n\nLearning Outcomes: \nBy the end of the session\, participants will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the key principles and expectations of working in a boarding environment\nFeel more confident in supporting the wellbeing and development of boarders\nRecognise the legal context\, including safeguarding responsibilities and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding\nReflect on their role within the wider pastoral team and identify strategies for maintaining personal wellbeing and resilience\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeakers: \nDavid Walker FTIOB\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director\, BSA/TIOB \nDavid Walker has over 20 years’ experience in boarding education\, having worked in a variety of schools across the UK and Africa. His career includes leadership roles in both senior and prep school settings\, complemented by service as a prep school governor and trustee of a multi-academy trust. Before joining the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-educational independent school in the South-East\, where he oversaw student welfare and pastoral care. His extensive background in safeguarding\, boarding leadership\, and governance gives him a broad perspective on the sector\, enabling him to support schools in delivering outstanding pastoral provision. \n\nGaelle Sullivan\, Director of Research\, Inclusion and IELA \nGaelle is Director of Research\, Inclusion and IELA and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East.

Since leaving the police Dave over the last 17 years has delivered hundreds of Drug Awareness Sessions to Schools and Colleges all over the country engaging with all parties (Students/Staff and Parental Sessions) to ensure his key message about raising the awareness of the real risks and dangers associated with many substances young people in particular are likely to come into contact with. He does not preach and delivers his presentations in a ‘non judgemental manner’ in his own ‘unique style’\, ensuring that his audiences engage with him from the very minute he starts to speak. He also has strong links with NAMSS (National Association for Managers of Student Services)\, the BSA (Boarding School Association) and Hieda (Health in Education) delivering bespoke Drug Awareness Training events for their staff (including work overseas with international schools). \n\nThis event will be held jointly with:
