A UK Government Conflict Expert and Director at Human Rights at Sea International\, Rob champions social purpose in marine human rights. He is a certified International Conflict Negotiator and Peacemaker\, holds a Master’s in Social and Global Justice\, and serves on the Board of Governors at Wellington School\, Somerset. Through Rob’s work within the school sector\, including the governance role\, Rob brings unique insight into how boarding schools can plan for\, respond to\, and recover from crises with clarity and confidence. \n\n \nEugene du Toit\, Master of Haileybury\n \nEugene was born in Zimbabwe\, grew up in South Africa\, and has lived in England for over 25 years. Before being appointed Master of Haileybury\, Eugene was the Headmaster of Wellington School\, Somerset\, served as Deputy Headmaster at Trinity School\, Croydon\, and was an Undermaster at St Paul’s School. \nEugene has taught Economics\, coached rugby and athletics\, has been a tutor\, Head of House and Head of Year during his career. Eugene is a graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand\, Johannesburg\, and has completed both an MA and an MBA through UCL. It looks at the variety of roles within a boarding school and boarding house\, from Director of Boarding to house support staff\, and how this works in different types of boarding schools. It will then consider the practical and legal requirements of staff/student ratios and the importance of creating clear rotas to ensure appropriate staff cover for boarding at all times.  \n Training topics will include:  \n\nBoarding roles and job descriptions \nStaff planning and regulations \nStaff cover and house supervision. \n\nLearning outcomes:   \n\nA clear understanding of different roles and functions in boarding\, legal requirements for staff/boarder ratios and how to organise staff rotas. \nHow to evaluate good practice in pupil management and supervision \nEmbedding relevant key principles within the duty team \n\nBOOK NOW \n  \n\nSpeaker: \n \nAndrew Lewin\, BSA Senior Consultant \nAndrew Lewin was International Director at the BSA before moving into a consultant role. His broad remit offers a range of services to boarding schools worldwide. He has considerable experience working with boarding school staff all around the world and lived and worked in boarding schools for much of his life. \nAndrew has set up his own company in 2020\, Project 1000 Ltd\, that focuses on educational consultancy and resilience coaching. He is a WRAW Master Practitioner\, trained by the Wellbeing Project\, and offers life coaching\, diagnostic assessments\, workshops and seminars. He is also Education Development Director for Performance Learning\, an NSPCC Associate and an IAPS Consultant\, as well as a Director of Wiltshire & Swindon Sport and Team Removals. \n\nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

It is relevant also to those who have recently taken up a new position\, allowing time for reflection on personal skills and how they work in a leadership role. \nThere is often a huge focus on equipping leaders in the classroom with the necessary skills to achieve the best outcomes for pupils\, but the skills required by pastoral leaders are often more subtle\, more wide-ranging and can often have a greater impact for the children in the school. Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the daily lives of all within the boarding house and community. \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. The training content covered will apply to houseparents of large teams\, Heads of Boarding as well as Deputy Head\, Pastoral\, depending on the size and makeup of the school. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nLeadership styles – this session will consider the demands of leadership and the recognised different styles of leadership\nBuilding an effective team – communication\, planning\, building a shared vision and appreciating the skills and attributes of team members\nEffective leadership – deployment of resources\, time management\, focusing on student outcomes\nSuccessful leadership – this final session will consider how to put everything into practice\, discuss self-reflection and review.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nPromote a better understanding of different leadership styles\nBe aware of how to build a successful team\nDevelop skills as a reflective practitioner.\n\nBOOK NOW \n  \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.
