This seminar is designed to support staff who are new to boarding by complementing their school-based induction and providing essential context around the key responsibilities and expectations of the role. \nBy equipping new boarding staff with a solid understanding of the principles\, legal context\, and practicalities of boarding care\, schools can quickly establish confident\, capable teams who enjoy their duties and provide high-quality support to the young people in their care. \nThe session will explore the Duty of Care framework\, safeguarding\, roles and boundaries\, and how to meet the everyday needs of boarders. Delegates are encouraged to familiarise themselves in advance with their school’s boarding handbook and relevant boarding-related materials from their school’s website. \nTraining Topics: \n\nSafeguarding and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding:\nAn overview of legal and inspection requirements\, with a focus on current safeguarding expectations in boarding practice.\nMeeting the Needs of Boarders:\nPractical case studies to explore common scenarios in boarding life and how to manage them effectively and empathetically.\nUnderstanding Your Role in Boarding:\nDiscussion around the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents—and your own expectations as a member of the pastoral team.\nWorking Safely and Looking After Yourself:\nTips and guidance on maintaining your wellbeing\, working safely\, and finding fulfilment in your boarding role.\n\nLearning Outcomes: \nBy the end of the session\, participants will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the key principles and expectations of working in a boarding environment\nFeel more confident in supporting the wellbeing and development of boarders\nRecognise the legal context\, including safeguarding responsibilities and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding\nReflect on their role within the wider pastoral team and identify strategies for maintaining personal wellbeing and resilience\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nDale Wilkins FTIOB\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance\nDale joined the BSA in 2017 to lead safeguarding\, inspection\, and compliance across the UK\, building on his experience as a course tutor since 1998. He works closely with ISI\, Ofsted\, and the DfE\, while also overseeing the Group’s work in Scotland and Wales. A trainer and consultant for BSA and SACPA\, he is Vice Chair of SAFCAB. Dale previously spent 31 years as a boarding practitioner\, including roles as Housemaster and Deputy Head at Old Swinford Hospital. Beyond education\, he trains for the Methodist Church\, is a charity trustee\, chairs a performing arts organisation\, and volunteers widely. \nGaelle Sullivan\, Director of Research\, Inclusion and IELA \nGaelle is Director of Research\, Inclusion and IELA and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East.

While permanent staff are fully trained in safeguarding policies and procedures\, visiting professionals\, support staff\, and regular visitors may not always receive the same level of guidance. \nThis concise\, practical webinar provides a clear induction into the key expectations\, policies\, and practices that support the safeguarding and wellbeing of boarders. It is ideal for anyone who regularly enters the boarding environment but is not part of the permanent boarding team. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe Welcome: Signing in procedures\, access to keys and keypads\, and maintaining house security\nOpen Door Policy: Understanding boundaries\, supervision\, and how to interact respectfully within the boarding setting\nManaging Disclosures: What to do if a young person shares a concern\, and how to work collaboratively with the house team\n\nLearning outcomes: \nBy the end of the session\, participants will: \n\nHave increased awareness of safeguarding responsibilities when visiting a boarding house\nUnderstand key policies and procedures that support the safety and wellbeing of boarders\nBe confident in how to act appropriately and safely within the boarding environment\nRecognise the importance of communication with the boarding team and how to respond to any safeguarding concerns\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.
