In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

Young people are growing up in a world where they are very likely to encounter and could experiment with vaping or other substances. He does not preach and delivers his presentations in a ‘non judgemental manner’ in his own ‘unique style’\, ensuring that his audiences engage with him from the very minute he starts to speak. He also has strong links with NAMSS (National Association for Managers of Student Services) and for the BSA (Boarding School Association) delivering bespoke Drug Awareness Training events for their staff (including work overseas with international schools).

This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to boarding. The sooner staff new to boarding have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise.  \n This seminar will cover the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and meeting boarders’ needs. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. In advance of the seminar\, it is recommended that delegates have familiarised themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the boarding section of the schools’ website and promotional material that relate to boarding.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nSafeguarding and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding – this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools \nMeeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding\, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by the pastoral team \nUnderstanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school \nWorking safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping you healthy\, safe\, and enjoying your role in boarding! \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding\, and their role within that \nAn increased confidence to be able to support the young people in your care \nIncreased awareness of the legal context\, safeguarding and National Minimum Standards for Boarding \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

Furthermore\, Thomas is a PhD candidate in Social Work and Social Care investigating the radicalisation of young men and the role of masculinity in violent extremism. \nThomas is a qualified Social Worker with a background in Children’s services and holds years of experience in multi-agency safeguarding work. His work spans across safeguarding children and adults from a range of harms\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, criminal exploitation\, county lines\, modern slavery and radicalisation. Thomas is passionate about supporting professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns\, and is using his PhD research to build a practical tool to support social workers to assess and safeguard males whom are vulnerable to radicalisation. \nIn his current role as Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT)\, Thomas provides regular trainings to staff and teams across the Trust\, including Prevent Awareness\, Workshop to Raise Awareness on Prevent (WRAP)\, and Safeguarding Adults. Thomas also offers regular expert consultations to support staff to respond to complex radicalisation concerns across the Trust\, and is the SPFT representative in the Prevent’s Channel Panels across Sussex that provide a multi-agency approach to safeguarding those assessed as vulnerable to radicalisation. Moreover\, Thomas contributes to the development and updating of Policy within SPFT to structurally respond to emerging safeguarding concerns regarding radicalisation. \nOver the years\, Thomas has gathered substantial knowledge and practical expertise on the multi-faceted dynamics of safeguarding and radicalisation. His unique position of both working in and researching on this issue provides unique insights into this complex area of safeguarding. After a decade leading Uppingham and 32 years overall in teaching\, he embarked on a third career as Chief Executive of AGBIS. Six years experience as Health centre manager most recently at Wycliffe College. \n  \n\nAlicia Drummond\, Founder of Teen Tips LTD \nAlicia is passionate about providing evidenced-based advice to parents\, teachers and all those looking after children and young people\, so they can be pro-active in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of those in their care.  Alicia also works directly with children and young people empowering them to look after their mental health and wellbeing. \nAlicia draws on the latest research from psychotherapy\, psychology and neuroscience\, along with her experience of working as an adolescent therapist. \nAlicia is a BACP accredited therapist\, parenting expert\, sought after keynote speaker\, member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for a Fit and Healthy Childhood\, author and a mother.  She is regularly sought for her expert opinion by the media. \nHaving worked with schools across the UK for more than a decade delivering webinars\, talks and workshops to parents\, carers\, staff\, and pupils; in 2020 Alicia created The Wellbeing Hub. This award-winning platform offers a proactive approach to young people’s mental health and wellbeing by providing evidenced-based support for the whole school community – staff\, parents\, carers and pupils.  The platform is currently impacting more than 130\,000 pupils in over 220 schools. \n\nSkyler Moulder\, Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge \nSkyler did her Adult Nursing BSc at Kings College London in 2011 and went straight into community nursing. After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). This is where she is now and where her passion for independent school nursing started. \n\nRosie McManus\, HIEDA Nurse Advisor \nTrained at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children Rosie came to school nursing in the independent sector 16 years ago. With a passion for boarding pastoral and health care Rosie has developed an interest in the understanding and development of the health needs of boarding school students. \n  \n\nLisa Jones\, Co-founder of HeadStrong \nLisa Jones is a multi-award-winning\, science driven\, fact-based therapist\, coach and passionate trainer who believes that prevention is better than intervention. \nLisa works in both the corporate and education sector teaching others the importance of brain health\, resilience\, stress management and emotional wellbeing as well as running a busy private practice. \nLisa is a fully qualified and insured Psychotherapist\, Counsellor\, Health Coach and Mental Health Consultant registered with The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). She is also a senior accredited member of The National Counselling Society and The Association for Coaching. \nAfter graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Counselling & Psychotherapy\, Lisa went on to work with adults to overcome addiction and mental health issues. Having experienced chronic ill health for many years\, Lisa developed a keen interest in brain health and the brain / mind/ body connection. Lisa was fascinated by how our minds can influence our wellbeing and vice versa. After overcoming her own health issues\, she then specialised in the field of chronic ill health and stress. Lisa went on to certify in Applied Neuroscience and Brain Health\, Applied Neuroscience and Coaching and Women’s Health and Neurobiology. \nShe also gained a NLP Practitioner Coaching Diploma and certified as a Life Coaching Practitioner\, Youth Coach\, NLP Master Practitioner\, Hypnotherapy Practitioner\, Mental Health First Aid and completed a BPS approved certificate in clinical supervision. The specific focus of her work addresses the mind-body connection and the impact our language (self-talk) and belief system has on all aspects of health and wellbeing as well as self-esteem and confidence. The principles of Neuroscience underpin the work Lisa does as she believes it is essential to educate people on how the brain works\, how to influence mindset and to understand neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to form and re-organise neural connections). By doing so\, this enables us to build resilience\, develop essential life skills and learn how to manage stress effectively. \nTogether with her business partner\, Veronika Chidemo – a Teacher and School Mental Health Leadership Consultant\, she co-founded HeadStrong Training in Education. Lisa and Veronika are passionate about an integrative approach to Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education and believe that everyone should be equipped with essential skills to confidently manage the stresses in life. \n\nDave Parvin\, Former Drug Squad Officer \nA former Drug Squad Officer- Dave has seen the damage and destruction first hand that  ‘drugs’ can bring to those who choose to have a life that involves the use of these substances and as such is passionate about raising the awareness of the ‘potential risks and dangers’ associated with this life style. Since leaving the police Dave over the last 17 years has delivered hundreds of Drug Awareness Sessions to Schools and Colleges all over the country engaging with all parties (Students/Staff and Parental Sessions) to ensure his key message about raising the awareness of the real risks and dangers associated with many substances young people in particular are likely to come into contact with. He does not preach and delivers his presentations in a ‘non judgemental manner’ in his own ‘unique style’\, ensuring that his audiences engage with him from the very minute he starts to speak. He also has strong links with NAMSS (National Association for Managers of Student Services)\, the BSA (Boarding School Association) and Hieda (Health in Education) delivering bespoke Drug Awareness Training events for their staff (including work overseas with international schools). \n\nAlice Beard\, Health Centre Manager\, Sherborne Girls \nAlice has been a qualified nurse for coming up to 20 years\, initially specialising in orthopaedics in the local acute trust\, then working as a clinical site manager. As her own family grew\, she moved into practice nursing\, enjoying the 1-2-1 patient care and finding her passion of health promotion. \nShe started working for Sherborne Girls 8 years ago as a member of the nursing team and took over as the nurse manager 2 years ago. She loves school nursing and the age range of the pupils in her care; she has seen many changes in the needs of her pupils and every day presents a different scenario or challenge. \nHer and her team have a passion to ensure\, the pupils leave SG\, with the confidence and knowledge on how best to look after their health and wellbeing. \n\nNatalie Bosmans\, School Nurse \nNatalie is originally from the UK where she trained as a nurse\, midwife and health visitor.  She worked as a Specialist nurse for Looked after children before making the move to working as a school nurse in the international school setting in Switzerland over 18 years ago.  She is passionate about child and adolescent health and well-being\, and have a particular interest in health promotion and prevention\, this led to her undertaking her Masters degree in Public Health in 2020.   She is the professional development coordinator for the School nurse Collaborative Learning Group for the Swiss Group of International Schools\,  a role that  enables her to connect with other school nurses in the international school setting\, giving them the opportunity to work together and learn together\, promoting best practice within our schools for our students and their families.

Dr Jody Walshe will take delegates further into the study of CBT practices and how we can use these to support young people in establishing resilience\, self-confidence and managing stress and negative feelings. \nThis half-day course is for delegates who have been using some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches in their work. This course will be an opportunity to develop and extend the skills of delegates who have started to apply some CBT tools in their work. The focus of much of her work looked at anxiety and mental health issues in school settings. This webinar is suitable for anyone who works with children and young people and will increase understanding of teenage development and how to look past behaviour at what might be underlying and driving it. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nAn introduction to mental health and wellbeing\, with specific focus on adolescents\nLooking at teenage brain development and how this might impact behaviour\nFocus on what causes concern and risk-taking behaviour\, with an emphasis on practical ideas and strategies to support young people\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nIncreased understanding of teenage brain development\nIncreased understanding of risk-taking behaviour and what causes it\, in adolescents\nPractical ideas and strategies for supporting young people in their development.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: Nikki Holmes\, Director – Safer Together \nAfter graduating with a degree in criminology and psychology\, Nikki began her carer with West Midlands Police where she served as a police officer in a variety of different roles. It was whilst working as an Integrated Offender Manager (IOM) that she developed a greater understanding of the issues of exploitation\, serious youth violence and trauma. \nNikki recognised that as much as she had a passion for policing\, she wanted to use the knowledge she had acquired to support children and young people\, rather than as she described ” be complicit in punishing them for their abuse.” This resulted in her taking the brave step of leaving a job she thought she would do for life. \nThe next step for Nikki was to work in the field of substance misuse\, where she managed and developed a young person’s substance misuse service in Warwickshire. She led the development of Hidden Harm Pathways\, ensuring that children of parents dependent on substances were no longer invisible and in receipt of the support they needed. This work was recognised by the CQC as an exemplar of outstanding and innovative practice that should be replicated nationally. \nIn May 2017\, Nikki joined the CQC as a Children’s services inspector where she led and contributed to a range of National Review processes including LA SEND inspections\, JTAI’s and Children Looked After and Safeguarding (CLAS) reviews. She also managed a portfolio of children’s homes\, supporting them to meet the complex needs of children in a way that was responsive and trauma informed. She remains a bank Children’s Services Inspector today. (CSI) \nIn 2020\, in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic\, Nikki launched Safer Together. “For me\, the pandemic was a moment of clarity\, a moment where I reflected on what I learnt as a CSI and a moment where I thought I want to share the learning to support fatigued practitioners and systems to navigate the complexities of the world our children live in\, to come together\, work together to make society safer.” \nIn addition to heading Safer Together\, Nikki is also an accredited SILP reviewer and author of Domestic Homicide Reviews (DHRs)\, Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs) and Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews (CSPRs). She is also a researcher\, and a visiting lecturer of criminology and psychology. \nIn the little spare time she has\, she fills her cup by spending as much time with her two boys\, Joe and Flynn\, the two not so little people who inspire her every day to be better and do better so that their world\, and the world for their children is a safer\, fairer and a more compassionate place.

Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis.

He’s lived\, and taught English in a variety of countries in Asia and Europe. \nHe’s had an abiding interest in ESP and English for Academic purposes and presently teach mainly IGCSE and IELTS candidates in the age range of 14-18. He is currently working on an outreach programme with Canterbury Christchurch University for international 6th formers to prepare them for undergraduate studies. \nHe has a strong interest in vocabulary teaching\, and while he’s certainly no expert\, he hopes that other teachers can learn from his mistakes! Over the last few years\, teachers of EAL at our school have been engaging with and supporting our colleagues in other departments much more to help our EAL students settle in\, and hopefully thrive. Key to this is simple learner training based on some basic tasks and approaches\, which he hopes to present and hopefully will stimulate interest and discussion.

From recognising how children and young people grieve and the physiological impact of grief\, to supporting young children in coping with a return to ‘normal’ activities after suffering a loss\, this seminar will equip delegates with a clearer understanding of how to help. \nThe focus will be on the age range of 8-18 years\, but may go beyond these years to account for developmental variations. The session will also consider the child in the context of the boarding school ‘family’\, and the role pastoral staff in particular\, can play. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nPrevalence of childhood bereavement – in context\nUsual reactions to grief and developmental variations of grief\nTheories of grief\nThe roles that schools play in supporting bereaved children and young people\nCommunication – with the child\, family\, staff\, students\, and wider school community\nHelping children understand their feelings\nWhen to seek more help\nSelf-care.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the impact of loss and bereavement on young people\, including the physical and psychological impact of grief\nRecommended actions to help children and young people understand their feelings\nSignposting to additional support and when to access this.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nNicola Ellis-Jones\, Training Partnerships Practitioner\, Winston’s Wish.  \nAn experienced teacher and trainer of over 15 years\, Nicola also has a background in working with vulnerable families in the community\, having worked with both Women’s Aid\, and with the local Family Learning Team for Adult Education. \nAs a training partnerships practitioner for Winston’s Wish\, Nicola is part of a team who provides training for teachers\, youth workers and other professionals to enable them to better support grieving children and young people in their care. On average\, 1 in every 29 children will be bereaved of a parent or sibling – that’s one per class. \nWinston’s Wish was the UK’s first childhood bereavement charity\, and has been supporting bereaved children and young people for over 30 years\, providing emotional and practical bereavement support to children\, young people and those who care for them.
