Statutory Guidance outlines that at least one member of every appointment panel for roles involving work with children must undertake ‘proper’ safe recruitment training.  \nThe  Safer Recruitment Consortium has developed a Safer Recruitment package for the wider children’s workforce (this course) where previously this was solely aimed at those in the education sector. DESCRIPTION:The Closing date for September 2025 applications is 30 July 2025\n\nCourse outline\nThe MA in Residential Education is a one-year\, part-time course for those working in or with an interest in boarding schools.  It is offered in partnership with the Boarding Schools’ Association. This course allows those with experience in boarding\, who are keen to research\, to write about a topic of interest to them.  The heart of the MA is a 12\,000-15\,000 word dissertation.  You will do a literature review\, which informs your dissertation\, and you will learn about different research methods.  You will be expected to read widely. She completed a Masters in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and a post graduate diploma in Evidence Based Practice leading to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England. \n\nSkyler Moulder\, Lead Nurse\, The Leys School and Senior Nurse Advisor\, HIEDA \nSkyler did her Adult Nursing BSc at Kings College London in 2011 and went straight into community nursing. After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). It is relevant also to those who have recently taken up a new position\, allowing time for reflection on personal skills and how they work in a leadership role. \nThere is often a huge focus on equipping leaders in the classroom with the necessary skills to achieve the best outcomes for pupils\, but the skills required by pastoral leaders are often more subtle\, more wide-ranging and can often have a greater impact for the children in the school. Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the daily lives of all within the boarding house and community. \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

He worked briefly as a specialist advisor on two World Health Organization projects before becoming the lead for early help within a large unitary authority. \nHe worked as an education safeguarding advisor supporting 530 schools and for the past 6 years has worked as the National Director of Safeguarding & Mental Health in a multi-academy trust. Jon is co-chair of the Pan-London Education Safeguarding Board\, founder member of the National Association of Academy Safeguarding Advisors (NAASA) and co-chairs the Coalition of Mental health provision between the State and Independent Sector. He also acts as a mentor to five young men starting in business ensuring that they develop to their full potential. In his spare time\, he is a voluntary youth worker. When (if) he ever relaxes he is a keen fan of Korean dramas (though must use subtitles). \n\nMike Grenier\, Deputy Head Pastoral\, Eton College \nMike oversees all our pastoral care for boys and so works closely with the Stephenson Centre for Wellbeing\, the Health Centre\, the Director of Safeguarding\, the Director of SPHERE\, the Director of Inclusion Education\, the Head of Access\, the Heads of Block as well as House Masters and Dames. \nMike studied English Literature at undergraduate level at the University of Oxford and has a PGDE from Edge Hill University. He was a House Master from 2004-17 in Wotton House and from 2019-21 in Evans’s House. His wife\, Emma\, is a physiotherapist\, and they have a daughter and a son. He was recently part of an expert steering group with TikTok looking at harmful and dangerous online challenges. \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. \nAs an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents\, teachers and governors to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 16 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has recently worked with a team developing a national online safety strategy in Rwanda and chaired the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance.

This role involves working with senior leaders to discuss EDI strategic decisions and policy\, working with both Teaching and Professional Services staff to foster a more inclusive community\, and working with the pupil led Voices4Change group. Our Caterham Voice4Change group actively promotes diversity and inclusion across all aspects of school\, organising awareness raising events\, driving positive reflection and actioning change\, creating celebratory resources\, as well as leading assemblies. \n\nEd Boulter-Comer\, Houseparent\, Fettes College \nEd Started teaching in the Independent Sector in 2002. The State Sector could not employ him at that point as he was gay\, very much out of the closet\, and Section 28 still forbade the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality. Being a teacher well before sexual orientation became a protected characteristic in 2010\, he has forged a career of ‘firsts’ in the schools he has worked in. First out teacher. First out teacher in a boarding House. First teacher to get a civil partnership. First teacher to have adoption leave. First gay Houseparent. Going first can be a leap of faith for individuals and institutions and Ed will share some of the ways in which he has brought people along with him over the past two decades. \nEd is the Houseparent of a Senior Boy’s House at Fettes College in Edinburgh. He\, his husband\, and their two children live alongside 60 students\, not all of whom are boys. \n\nM Jolly\, Director of Wellbeing and Inclusion\, Charterhouse School \nM Jolly is the director of wellbeing and inclusion and senior leader at Charter House school. She is also a qualified therapist and clinical Supervisor. She has worked in schools with young people for over ten years and is creating real change within her school. M Jolly\, harnesses student voice to bring awareness to the school community and beyond about important issues. The EDI vision between 2021-2023 has placed emphasis on allyship and anti-discrimination\, culminating in pupil-led Charters for Anti-Racism\, Anti-Sexism\, LGBTQ+ and Anti-Bullying. Her school were recently awarded The Rainbow Flag Award\, in recognition of their pro-active and whole School approach to the positive inclusion and visibility of LGBT+ people.
