detailed within the most recent Intercollegiate document 2019.  Content also links with Annex C of Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024 detailing roles and responsibilities of Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads.  \nCase study and practical learning examples are based on specific clinical practice examples and dilemmas and reference to specialist DESCRIPTION:The BSA’s Programme of Professional Development and Training is the most comprehensive CPD package offered to staff in boarding schools\, and includes a series of professional practice Certificate courses specifically designed to meet the practical needs of boarding staff and provide an internationally recognised qualification in Boarding Education. \nThis is a two year modular course is aimed specifically at staff working in and around boarding. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

The last 14 years of his police service was in the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU). Philip is a qualified AIM3 Assessor of children displaying HSB. Philip also quality assured the Home Office Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Service (HSBSS) where he oversaw and triaged all the requests for support and advised personally on all the complex cases. He is also qualified as the following: \n\nFamily Liaison Officer (FLO)\nDisaster Victim Identification Officer (DVI)\nSignificant Witness interviewer (Sig Wit)\nEnhanced Cognitive Witness Interviewer\nDomestic Abuse Officer\nPIP Level 2 investigator\nAchieving Best Evidence (ABE- VRI vulnerable and intimidated witness interviewer)\nSpecialist Child Abuse Investigative Development Programme (SCAIDP)\nJoint Investigator – Section 47 Children Act ‘89\n\nPhilip was also seconded to the Training Department for 2 years\, where he received qualifications in training and delivered all these subjects\, including Harmful Sexual Behaviours (HSB). Philip supports survivors and families who have been victim of all types of abuse\, including technology assisted child sexual abuse (TACSA) through his work as a consultant for the Marie Collins Foundation.

Her background is with CAMHS where she has extensive experience working with young people with varying mental health difficulties. \nThis course is aimed at any school staff who work closely with young people struggling with their mental health and who wish to increase their knowledge and gain practical tips on how best to support them. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nPhysiology of anxiety – endorphins\, fight/fright\, window of tolerance\,\nAssessment – value of gathering information and how\nImpact of  Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) and Early Help pathways\nSafe place\, time out\, named support staff – considerations for schools\nCommunication styles and resources to aid effective communication\nCoping strategies – healthy and unhealthy – distraction techniques\, breathing\, mindfulness\, self sooth box\nWhen to be concerned and who to refer to – GP\, CAMHS\, counselling services.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nTo be updated on the physiological effect of anxiety on the body and be able to explain this simply to a young person to help them make sense of their symptoms\nTo gain skills and knowledge on how to conduct an initial assessment and history taking from a young person relating to their mental health\nTo expand knowledge on adjustments and support strategies that can be integrated in schools for young people with anxiety\nGain increased knowledge on referral pathways and multi-agency working.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nCarey Allen\, Mental Health Nurse\, Bredon School \nCarey has been a registered Mental Health Nurse since 2001. She currently works as a mental health lead/practitioner at Bredon School. Carey’s previous roles are diverse\, beginning with her first post with the NHS ad injury and challenging behaviour\, follow by forensic psychiatry in Edinburgh. Carey has a son and daughter who are both living with autism. This lead her into taking a post in CAMHS Worcestershire where she trained as a DBT nurse therapist. \n

DESCRIPTION:Date: September 30\, 2024\nTime: 10:30 – 15:30\nCost: BSA Full Member – £175\, BSA Affiliate Member – £ 250\, Non-member – £350\nAudience: Boarding staff\, Head of Boarding\, Deputy Head.\nPlatform: Zoom (online)\n\n\nCourse outline: \nThis virtual day seminar aims to equip those aspiring to move into leadership positions within boarding with the relevant skills and knowledge to lead their teams effectively\, and with the best outcomes for the boarders in their care. It is relevant also to those who have recently taken up a new position\, allowing time for reflection on personal skills and how they work in a leadership role.  \nThere is often a huge focus on equipping leaders in the classroom with the necessary skills to achieve the best outcomes for pupils\, but the skills required by pastoral leaders are often more subtle\, more wide-ranging and can often have a greater impact for the children in the school. Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the day to day lives of all within the boarding house\, and community.  \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. The training content covered will apply to Houseparents of large teams\, Heads of Boarding as well as Deputy Head\, Pastoral\, depending on the size and make up of the school.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nLeadership styles – this session will consider the demands of leadership and the recognised different styles of leadership \nBuilding an effective team – communication\, planning\, building a shared vision and appreciating the skills and attributes of team members \nEffective leadership – deployment of resources\, time management\, focusing on outcomes for students \nSuccessful leadership – this final session will consider how to put everything into practice\, discuss self-reflection and review. \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nPromote a better understanding of different leadership styles \nBe aware of how to build a successful team \nDevelop skills as a reflective practitioner. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.
