In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

SUMMARY:BSA Certificate in Boarding Practice – Pastoral Care
DESCRIPTION:The BSA’s Programme of Professional Development and Training is the most comprehensive CPD package offered to staff in boarding schools\, and includes a series of professional practice Certificate courses specifically designed to meet the practical needs of boarding staff and provide an internationally recognised qualification in Boarding Education. \nThis is a two year modular course is aimed specifically at staff working in and around boarding. Over the last 20 years  approx. 3000 House tutors\, Matrons\, Support Staff\, School Nurses\, Assistants\, House Parents and HsMs have completed this Award. \nThis course is aimed at graduates and non graduates\,  the key difference lies in the end of module assignment. The Course is arranged in two parts as follows: \n\nPart 1: BSA Certificate in Boarding Practice – Pastoral Care\n\nand one of these: \n\nPart 2: BSA Advanced Certificate in Boarding Practice Boarding Management\nPart 2: BSA Advanced Certificate in Boarding Practice for School Nurses\nPart 2: BSA Certificate in Boarding Practice – Pupil Welfare and Support\nPart 2: BSA Advanced Certificate in Boarding Practice – Supporting International Students\n\nWhat does this course cover? \nThis course is taken by both graduate teaching and non-graduate house staff\, including matrons\, assistant house staff and house parents\, with responsibility for the care and welfare of boarding pupils. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

Graduating from the University of Leeds with a master’s degree in Finance\, he was employed by two FTSE 100 international companies as a procurement director before starting his own business. Since establishing Connexcel\, he has devoted himself to helping elite private schools in China and the UK form partnerships through sister schools and cultural exchanges. John has supported schools in China with setting up new curriculums in collaboration with UK partners and training senior education personnel. He also acts a consultant for UK schools seeking advice on expanding their brand within the China. Through his consultancy work\, John has built an extensive network within the Chinese Education Bureau along with schools in the UK and China\, always taking the needs of each school to best allocate resources to support them. \n\n \nNicky Sakpoba\, Founder and Managing Director\, Panoba (Africa and Middle East) \nNicky was educated at an independent girls’ day school in West London\, and continued on to study for her Bachelor’s degree in European Languages at Royal Holloway College\, University of London. \nNicky’s career started in the luxury hotel industry\, where she spent the initial 10 years of her career in management roles in a number of London’s most prestigious five-star hotels. She went on to spend the following 12 years of her career in senior marketing roles within the London commercial property sector. \nAs a mother of two teenage children\, Nicky has been through the school search and selection process herself from prep schools through to sixth form\, and co-founding Panoba in 2014 was a natural extension of her personal experiences. \nNicky has a passion for offering overseas families sound and honest advice\, together with a handholding service to navigate the complexities of the UK education system and the school admissions process. After having spent her Sixth Form at a UK boarding school herself\, Theresa first did a banking apprenticeship in Munich. She then studied history and politics at the London School of Economics and at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University) in Boston. After university\, Theresa worked in the field of environmental and climate protection in Munich and Berlin\, where she was involved in Poland\, Hungary and Estonia’s processes of becoming EU members. She joined the family business Glasmacher Schulberatung in 2006 and for many years worked alongside her famous mother Barbara. She has been the agency’s Managing Director since 2013.

His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nDavid Walker\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB \nDavid is the BSA Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. She and her husband Tom have both worked closely with BSA\, and she has enjoyed writing some of their briefing papers\, delivering seminars and writing magazine articles\, including recently about the importance of sleep for teenagers. In 2019 the family moved to Malaysia where Rebecca took over a senior girls boarding house at Marlborough College just as the pandemic struck! She continues in her role as Housemistress and since August 2023 has been Head of Boarding.  \n\n\n \nRebecca represented Cambridge at lacrosse and hockey\, and has coached school hockey\, netball and athletics as well as running a variety of activities including a dissection club and teaching biology. Tracey’s next move took her to Bromsgrove School UK as a Senior Houseparent before moving to her current role as Head of Boarding at Bromsgrove International School Thailand. She is very passionate about boarding and pastoral care and enjoys engaging with children both inside and outside of the classroom environment. Tracey has been privileged to care for children from all over the globe and gained valuable experience in different contexts and cultures. All three boarding schools have had very different cohorts of students providing different challenges to overcome. Married with four grown up children and one grandchild\, in her spare time Tracey enjoys travelling around Asia\, experiencing the breathtaking scenery and outstanding hospitality on offer. They have recently been encouraged to take a risk assessment view in many other areas.  \nThis seminar will look at taking a risk assessed approach to all forms of harmful behaviour in young people. It will look at this both from an individual and a whole-setting perspective. We will examine the range of harmful behaviours present in settings today and look at how to identify and respond to them. We will do this with reference to the latest version of Keeping Children Safe in Education and Ofsted’s review of sexual abuse in schools.  \nThe seminar will look at how to best respond when an individual case of harmful behaviour has been identified. It will also look at how settings can proactively risk assess and mitigate those risks for a range of likely harmful behaviours.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nIdentifying the range of harmful behaviours present in settings\, including harmful sexual behaviours. \nDiversity\, vulnerability and disproportionality: what we know from cohorts of harmers and harmed children & young people \nBest practice in assessment\, safety planning\, intervention and moving on \nRisk assessment for whole settings. DESCRIPTION:The BSA’s Programme of Professional Development and Training is the most comprehensive CPD package offered to staff in boarding schools\, and includes a series of professional practice Certificate courses specifically designed to meet the practical needs of boarding staff and provide an internationally recognised qualification in Boarding Education. \nThis is a two year modular course aimed specifically at staff working in and around boarding. Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\nDavid Woodgate\, CEO\, ISBA \nDavid Woodgate was appointed Chief Executive of the Independent Schools Bursars’ Association in May 2016.  Prior to this he was Chief Executive of the Institute of Financial Accountants from 2007 to 2015 after which he spent a year as the Strategy Consultant to the Institute of Public Accountants in Australia. \nDavid qualified as a Barrister in 1982 following a first degree in Languages (French and Russian)\, Law and Linguistics.  He moved from the law into the City\, holding several senior management and executive positions in the National Westminster Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland – in Strategic Planning\, Corporate Finance and latterly as Director of e-Commerce for the corporate bank. He ran an outsourcing business and a specialist internal consultancy providing market intelligence and competitor analysis. \nHe completed an MBA at Warwick University Business School in 1992 with distinction.  A former Chief Executive of the Institute of Administrative Management\, he also holds a postgraduate diploma in Charity Management from the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and South Bank University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, a Chartered Banker\, a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights. David is also a former Chairman of Governors of an HMC Independent school and is currently a Governor of the City of London School. \n\nAileen Kane\, Deputy CEO & COO\, BSA \nAileen is Deputy CEO & COO of BSA Group. She leads operations at BSA Group and works closely with members to provide guidance and training.
