Throughout the three days there will be opportunities to meet\, collaborate and discuss with other participants and to learn from case studies and good practice from other schools. \nContent: \nThe course will bring together leaders from a wide range of backgrounds who will share knowledge and experiences to both support you with this important work and to challenge your thinking to enable professional growth. \nOver the three days we will explore the ‘why’ of this work including areas such as identity\, belonging\, use of language\, empowerment and intersectionality. He was educated at Emanuel School and graduated with honours in Chemistry from King’s College\, London. His first headship took him to Somerset where he was Headmaster of Sexey’s School (BSA) in Bruton. Prior to this he was Deputy Head at Bedford School (HMC)\, Director of Science at St Benedict’s School in Ealing (HMC)\, Senior Housemaster at Whitgift School (HMC) and Assistant Housemaster and Teacher of Chemistry at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Boys (HMC). He has been the Chairman of the State Boarding Schools’ Forum\, the Vice Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association and is currently it’s London Chair. He also sits on the Executive Committee of the BSA as the Inclusion and Diversity representative for the sector and is the co-founder of the ISC’s Inclusion and Diversity Group.  He regularly lectures at the Royal Institution of Great Britain\, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is also a Justice of the Peace. As well as being a school Governor\, he is also the trustee of various charities and used to sit on the Board of Education at the Diocese of Bath & Wells. He is a keen cook\, traveller and adventurer and recently led expeditions to Everest Base Camp\, Venezuela and the Red Sea. Irfan enjoys family time with his wife Jocelyn\, also a science teacher\, their two young daughters and their Jack Russell\, Rodney. \n\nThe Why\, What\, and How of Leading Diversity\, Equity and Inclusivity in your school \nSome key foundational considerations under the why\, what and how of your role which will help to position you as an effective and impactful Inclusion lead.  This session will cover various themes such as: \n\nthe importance of now\nestablishing definitions\nthe biggest misconceptions\nconnecting the dots of your strategy\, from audit to action plan\n\nSpeaker:  Temi Akindele Barker\, Founder\, Inclusion Labs \nTemi began her career as a consultant in Legal Executive Search\, both in the UK and internationally\, eventually becoming Co-Head of the Senior Team covering US and UK law firms\, and US financial institutions. A key part of her role involved supporting local and multinational clients to achieve their strategic  goals.  Prior to Inclusion Labs\, she worked in Strategy and Research with a focus  on start-ups.  Temi is a mum of two daughters and committed to helping schools  ask the right questions and focus on the important things when it comes to  diversity\, equity and inclusion.  Inclusion Labs offers a custom programme for schools\, grounded in research and best practice\, but most importantly on the lived experience of students and families\, particularly those from underrepresented groups. \n  \n\nUnderstanding Equality and the Law \nThis session will cover the various elements of equality included within English legislation and the obligations they place on organisations. It will also consider whether the protections are adequate and whether they allow Schools to genuinely demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusivity. \nSpeaker:  Gemma Woodhouse\, Partner\, Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP \nGemma is an employment partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper. She advises organisations on all elements of employment law including discrimination and equal opportunities. She also works with a number of independent schools and is joint Head of the Penningtons Manches Cooper Schools Sector. \n  \n  \nDelivering equitable outcomes \nSpeaker: Yasmina Kone\, Hemisphere Education \nYasmina is Deputy Lead of Hemisphere Education. She’s an award-winning start-up operator that’s worked with some of the UK’s top corporate and start-up companies. Her social impact work has seen her feature in the BBC\, Black Tech Fest and Busy Being Black Podcast\, and her clients have included FTSE500 companies where she’s helped to open access to minority groups and use business as force for good. She’s passionate about the impact that the education sector can have on creating a more inclusive society and is leading on Hemisphere Education’s adoption in UK schools. \n  \n\nLeadership Challenges and Opportunities \nHow can you lead as effectively as possible\, building capacity and confidence so that others move forward and achieve all they can? This session will explore the challenges that leadership presents\, alongside the opportunities it can offer\, and how you can make the most of them. \n\nCase studies\, Discussion and Next Steps  \nThis session will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand from school leaders about EDI work in their schools. The case studies will cover a range of different areas from the importance of pupil voice to recruitment. Participants will then have the chance to meet and discuss EDI work in their schools with other Inclusion Lead colleagues (in small zoom break out groups). To end the day\, we will briefly consider next steps and things to be researching or thinking about before the second day of this course. \nSpeaker:  Aiyaz Ahmed\, Biology Teacher and Diversity Champion\, Eastbourne College \nAiyaz has been teaching at Eastbourne College for five years and started up a pupil lead diversity forum named BE YOU four years ago\, which he currently leads. Over the years this has become more popular and an integral part of the college. It has shaped the culture of the college community and has also empowered young people to be part of the changes that promote inclusivity and diversity. Aiyaz is passionately dedicated to his role and works collaboratively with the PSHE lead\, HR\, HoDs and SMT to drive the changes that they feel will make the college more diverse and inclusive. Prior to this\, Aiyaz taught science at inner London secondary schools for ten years. \n  \n\nEquity\, Diversity and Inclusion: Safeguarding and Inspection \nThis session will look at safeguarding with an equity\, diversity and inclusion lens and will consider key inspection requirements. \n \nSpeaker:  Dale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA and BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Dale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit\, which was updated in 2022. \n  \n\nSupportive Conversations \nThis session will explore the need for a Coaching Mindset when having supportive and robust conversations about sensitive and important topics. We will explore what coaching is and is not\, as well as learn skills you can immediately use with students and staff. \n\nIdentity\, Belonging and Connectedness \nThis session will explore the notions of identity\, belonging and connectedness. Coco will share her own stories of identity and belonging as well as her experiences of working with young people in schools. How do our different and often intersecting identities shape our capacity to belong and connect and how can schools provide an environment where connectedness thrives? \n \nSpeaker: Ammy Davis Potter \nAmmy is an educational consultant and inclusive education specialist. She worked in boarding schools for 30 years in a number of different roles including Head of Department\, Houseparent\, Head of Boarding and Deputy Head (Pastoral).  She then worked for the BSA Group as Director of Guardianship and Inclusion before setting up Ammy Davies Education in 2023 providing consultancy for schools\, other businesses and private families. \n  \nSpeaker: Mutisunge Edwards\, Christ’s Hospital \nMutisunge Edwards is the first ever full-time equity\, diversity and inclusion lead at Christ’s Hospital School. Mutisunge Edwards is now working closely with staff in all departments\, as well as with pupils\, to help ensure that all aspects of the school’s work are viewed through the EDI lens. Her background is predominantly in Early Years education. Throughout her career\, she has tried to implement change and integrate inclusion from a young age. \n  \n\nCase Studies\, Discussion and Closing Remarks \nThis session will be similar to the one at the end of day 1 in that it will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand from school leaders about EDI work in their schools. The case studies will cover a range of different areas to complement those discussed on day 1. Participants will then have the chance to meet and discuss EDI work in their schools with other Inclusion Lead colleagues (in small zoom break out groups). The day will close with an opportunity to reflect on the how\, the why and the what of the Inclusion lead role and moving forward in an effective and impactful way. \n  \n \nSpeaker : Sadia Hussain-Savuk \nDEI Lead\, Fettes College Edinburgh and Independent EDI educational consultant \nSadia is the DEI Lead at Fettes College\, also working independently to provide DEI support to support to other independent schools in Scotland.  She started her teaching career in 2008 as a Biology teacher after having initially worked for the NHS as a scientist. This not only helps an organisation thrive and grow\, but also prevents managers from being distracted by disputes. Where contentious issues do arise\, he is experienced in employment tribunal litigation and he regularly advises on employment claims such as unfair dismissal\, whistleblowing and discrimination. \nHe trained and qualified in employment law with a Magic Circle firm in London. She specialises in education and employment law. She advises on a range of employment and pastoral issues\, in particular when the reputation of a school is at stake. \nAn area of particular interest for Joanna is safeguarding and she has spoken widely on this subject national conferences and has also written widely on this and other issues affecting schools and charities. \nA major part of our practice is in relation to the management of allegations against staff as well as child-on-child abuse\, including guidance on making appropriate referrals. This inevitably overlaps with the question of sex and gender and Joanna has particular interest in how schools support and safeguard trans-gender people. \n\n \nJames Wood\, Regional Security Director\, Northern Europe\, International SOS \nIn this role\, James provides strategic security advice\, guidance and support to clients throughout the region on all aspects of our Security service delivery. \nPrior to this\, James led International SOS’ global Security Consulting Practice between 2019 and 2022. He also led a team of 35 security experts who focus on expert consulting engagements with clients in their geographic regions of responsibility\, as well as thought leadership\, operational delivery and oversight and delivery of International SOS solutions. \nA certified Business Continuity expert through the Business Continuity Institute\, James joined International SOS in May 2011 as Coordinating Security Manager for the Asia Pacific region where he supported clients during security incidents such as violent unrest in northern Papua New Guinea\, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and flooding in Jakarta. \nHe subsequently moved\, in September 2014\, to the role of Regional Security Operations Manager in the Europe Regional Security Centre\, with a focus on Europe\, Central Asia and West & Maghreb Africa. Karl has been employed for the last 16 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has recently worked with a team developing a national online safety strategy in Rwanda and chaired the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance.

His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

This session is focussed on boarding staff in prep schools but equally applicable to those in a senior school\nPlatform: Zoom (online)\n\n\nCourse outline: \nBoarding school staff must carefully balance the needs and schedules of both flexi boarders and full boarders. \nFlexi boarders\, who may only stay on campus a few nights a week\, may require less supervision and structure than full boarders\, who live on campus full-time. To accommodate both types of students\, staff may need to be flexible with scheduling and have different levels of supervision for each group. Additionally\, they may need to create separate spaces or activities for flexi boarders to ensure they have a sense of belonging and connection to the school community. \nCommunication with both students and their families is also important to ensure everyone is on the same page and expectations are clear. For house parents\, the challenges will involve the logistics of flexi boarding management in relation to booking systems and staffing. Karl has been employed for the last 16 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has recently worked with a team developing a national online safety strategy in Rwanda and chaired the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance.

He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n \nSarah Bellotti\, Chair BAISIS and Head Mill Hill International \nSarah was elected BAISIS Chair in January 2022\, having served as Deputy Chair since November 2020.Sarah started her career in education at an international school in Rome\, Italy and then returned to the UK to take up a post at King’s Ely where she later became Director of King’s Ely International. Since 2014\, Sarah has worked at Mill Hill International as the founding Headteacher. \n  \n \nKarl Hopwood\, E-Safety Expert and Chair\, SACPA \nKarl Hopwood is an esafety expert. He is a member of UKCCIS (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and sits on the advisory board for the new UK Safer Internet Centre. Karl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission and several Local Authorities within the UK. As an ex headteacher\, he continues to work closely with children\, young people\, parents and teachers to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl works closely with the Boarding Schools’ Association and supports many of their schools. He is also an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU safer internet programme. \nSimon Hill\, Deputy Head (Pastoral)\, Christ College Brecon \nSimon grew up in Eastbourne\, East Sussex and was educated at Eastbourne College. He gained a BA (Hons) Geography at Kings College London University and a PGCE at the Institute of Education\, London. He started his career as a teacher of geography at King Edward’s School\, Surrey\, before moving to Glenalmond College\, Perth where he was Senior Housemaster. In 2010\, Simon was appointed as Director of Boarding at Brisbane Grammar School\, Queensland\, before moving back to the UK to join Christ College as Deputy Head (Pastoral) in 2016.  His focus is on pupil wellbeing\, the second curriculum and sport of all types.  He also runs the school’s annual pupil exchange programme to Japan. \n  \nSarah Lancaster\, Director of Safeguarding: Children’s rights\, safeguarding and participation\, UNICEF \nSarah Lancaster is the Director of Safeguarding at UNICEF UK and oversees a team of technical specialists that support UNICEF UK’s work around Youth Voice and Influence\, Children’s Rights in Sport and Safeguarding.  \nSarah has over 16 years child protection and safeguarding experience\, both within statutory and NGO organisations working with children and young people. In her spare time\, she is also a Cub Scout Leader\, supporting young people in their personal development\, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society\, and gain important skills for life that support their growth and development.    \nSarah is passionate and committed to upholding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and uses a rights-based approach throughout all of her work\, ensuring children are not discriminated against and that their voices are amplified and their views listened to. \nBill Prior\, Joint Principal\, The International College\, King’s School\, Canterbury \nBill is founding Joint Principal at King’s International College in Canterbury. He has worked in China\, Scotland\, England and Germany in school management\, development\, teaching and qualifications. He has a First in Chinese from the University of Oxford\, trained as a teacher at Edinburgh University and later returned to Oxford to complete a Masters in Education. He is a Scot and speaks fluent Mandarin and German. \n  \nTom Caston\, Principal\, MPW Cambridge  \nTom Caston is Principal at MPW Cambridge\, as Fifth and Sixth Form College with 50% international students. Tom read Geography at the University of Exeter and subsequently gained an MSc in Managing School Improvement from the University of Reading. He worked in investment banking before starting his teaching career at Shiplake College in 1999. Prior to joining MPW he held senior posts in a number of independent schools\, most recently a Deputy Headship at Framlingham College. \n  \nMark Heywood\, Principal\, The Royal School Wolverhampton \nCurrently Principal/CEO of The Royal School\, Wolverhampton an all-through\, co-ed\, non-selective day and state boarding school of some 1500 pupils in the West Midlands.  Has been in post since 2011\, converting from independent school to State Free School/Academy in 2016.  Over past 40 years he has worked in state and independent schools\, boarding and day settings in London\, Cumbria\, Tyneside and now West Midlands.  \nThe Royal School has developed experience in working with Looked After Children (LAC) and UASC for a number of years\, the work of which featured in the Independent Review into Children’s Social Care report of 2022 and works closely with the RNSCF Springboard Trust on their Expert Advisory Group to the Government on the potential benefits of boarding in working with vulnerable children. \nMark has taught geography\, geology\, PE and Games and has a passion for outdoor education and international expeditions. \n \nCarolyn Harrison\, Deputy Head (Pastoral)\, Fettes College \nCarolyn grew up in the Outer Hebrides on the Isle of Lewis. Having studied Modern Languages at Cambridge University\, she joined Fettes College initially as a French teacher but was quickly drawn to the pastoral side of life at the school\, as a Houseparent in both the Prep School and the Senior School for over twenty years. Now as Deputy Head (Pastoral)\, she feels privileged to lead the school’s pastoral team\, supporting students\,families and staff every day. Outside the school gates\, her secret passions are spending time in the Harris hills and Formula 1. \n

Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n  \nGaelle Sullivan\, Director Research and Inclusion\, Director TIOB\n \nGaelle is Head of Research Services and Inclusion and joined the BSA in January 2023.
