He holds extensive experience tackling a wide range of complex radicalisation cases in various roles\, including as a Social Worker within Children’s Services\, as Channel Coordinator within Prevent and as the Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within an NHS mental health Trust. Furthermore\, Thomas is a PhD candidate in Social Work and Social Care investigating the radicalisation of young men and the role of masculinity in violent extremism. \nThomas is a qualified Social Worker with a background in Children’s services and holds years of experience in multi-agency safeguarding work. His work spans across safeguarding children and adults from a range of harms\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, criminal exploitation\, county lines\, modern slavery and radicalisation. Thomas is passionate about supporting professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns\, and is using his PhD research to build a practical tool to support social workers to assess and safeguard males whom are vulnerable to radicalisation. \nIn his current role as Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT)\, Thomas provides regular trainings to staff and teams across the Trust\, including Prevent Awareness\, Workshop to Raise Awareness on Prevent (WRAP)\, and Safeguarding Adults. Thomas also offers regular expert consultations to support staff to respond to complex radicalisation concerns across the Trust\, and is the SPFT representative in the Prevent’s Channel Panels across Sussex that provide a multi-agency approach to safeguarding those assessed as vulnerable to radicalisation. Moreover\, Thomas contributes to the development and updating of Policy within SPFT to structurally respond to emerging safeguarding concerns regarding radicalisation. \nOver the years\, Thomas has gathered substantial knowledge and practical expertise on the multi-faceted dynamics of safeguarding and radicalisation. His unique position of both working in and researching on this issue provides unique insights into this complex area of safeguarding. Thomas is available to deliver Prevent training to a range of organisations\, which will cover the key features of Prevent Awareness and Prevent WRAP\, including CONTEST\, the statutory duty under Counter Terrorism Security Act 2015 known as the ‘Prevent Duty’\, Vulnerabilities to Radicalisation\, Extremist Ideology and groups\, Current Threat Level\, and the Channel Panel process. Thomas will provide an opportunity to have a nuanced and critical discussion about this important and complex area of safeguarding .

SUMMARY:Avoiding burn out – how to look after yourself

Using his personal and professional experiences\, he is now a resilience coach\, helping individuals and teams to achieve healthy high performance\, offering an understanding of the impact of resilient thoughts and resilient actions on overall levels of wellbeing. He is an accredited Workplace Resilience and Wellbeing Master Practitioner\, trained by the Wellbeing Project\, and has extensive experience as an educational consultant. \nIn 2020\, he founded Project 1000 Ltd\, a company that focuses on delivering coaching and consultancy. Andrew identified his key stress triggers and wanted to work for himself. He counted back 1000 days from his 55th birthday that happened to be World Mental Health Day and his future began! \nIn addition to his time as a Head\, he has also undertaken most roles within boarding\, including as a GAP student\, houseparent\, governor  and worked as Director of Training and then International Director for the BSA\, before becoming a BSA Senior Consultant. \nIn this webinar\, Andrew will not only share his personal experiences but he will offer some opportunities to find solutions that just might help to make the difference to those struggling to achieve that life / work balance that can be so difficult in a boarding environment. He is working with the BSA to provide that additional support to practitioners who might need it. He wishes he knew then what he knows now! \nStandard 11.4 of the National Minimum Standards for Boarding (September 5 2022) ensures that\, ‘The school identifies at least one person other than a parent\, outside the staff\, and those responsible for the leadership and governance of the school\, who children may contact directly about personal problems or concerns at the school. This person may be known as the ‘independent person’. Children know who this person is\, know how to contact them and feel comfortable talking to them. His broad remit offers a range of services to boarding schools worldwide. During this time DLD College London were recognised with six national awards\, including Boarding School of the Year and innovation awards in Mental Health\, Wellbeing and Student voice. Previously\, he had school leadership roles at Collège Alpin Beau Soleil in Switzerland and St John’s School Leatherhead. Before his teaching career he worked in the finance sector and has recently completed a Masters in Educational Leadership\, with a focus on coaching in education. \nTom is a Council of International School Accreditation Team member and has a keen interest in international education and international boarding. He has recruited in China\, Croatia\, Thailand and Kazakhstan and has been a BSA Tutor on the Advanced Certificate course since 2017.

Eating disorders are a complex mental illness with a high mortality rate\, not only down to the eating disorder and malnutrition\, but also suicide. For staff working with young people\, having the confidence to offer support\, and open up conversations about eating disorders can be nerve-wracking. \nOur expert speaker\, Tina McGuff\, will address the need to raise awareness and have a proactive approach to supporting mental health concerns before the need for clinical intervention is reached. Tina will share her own story and invites delegates to ask questions. Having shared her struggles in her critically acclaimed memoir\, Seconds to Snap\, Tina has established herself as a leading voice on eating disorders\, mental health wellness and is a regular contributor across national media. Tina has appeared on Lorraine\, Channel 5\, ITV\, STV\, BBC as well as Jeremy Vine\, Radio 1 and other national and international media outlets. \nTina grew up in Dundee and spoke of her life being perfect – or so she thought. “I can tell you exactly the day it all went wrong – the day my mum attacked my dad with a kitchen knife. In those few\, short seconds\, a black hole opened up in my life and I fell right in.” Tina’s world turned upside down. Tina turned to the one thing she thought she could control – food and from this moment\, began the biggest fight of her life. \nTina openly shares her life-or-death struggle with anorexia and the darkest moments she experienced in her life whilst in and out of psychiatric wards. Tina enlightens her audience to inner struggles and silence that individuals face with any mental health disorder. \nTina now works to raise awareness and education through workshops\, talks and training across the world as far as Dubai and Abu Dhabi\, invited by the Prime Minister’s Office in the UK and across schools in the USA. Tina shares her insight to help leaders and managers support colleagues and their families via her Three T’s model – supporting difficult conversations that could save and change people’s lives as well as building stronger relationships within the workplace.
