He is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood\, co-author of 4 of its latest reports on mental health in childhood. He publishes medical papers on health and development subjects and addresses PSHE subjects including: screen time/dependence\, ‘soft’ drugs & vaping\, alcohol\, understanding boys\, sex and relationships\, body image\, and preventing mental health problems in children. Dr Sigman is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology\, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society\, and a Chartered Scientist awarded by the Science Council. He is the author of five books on PSHE-related topics\, including Getting Physical\, which won The Times Educational Supplement’s Information Book Award. \nMy talk on pupils Vaping: What you Need to Know Now\, trying to dissuade pupils from vaping involves an eclectic mix of harnessing their suspicion of big business exploiting them as well as clearly explaining new found effects of vaping that would matter to them today – with clear evidence to back it up. There are significant medical concerns regarding vaping even withoutnicotine due to the flavours and scents used.  If students do vape\, are they are addicted and if so\, how they can quit? \n\nAn Introduction to Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion in Schools with Gaelle Sullivan\, Director Research and Inclusion\, Director IELA \nUsing the BSA Index (Inclusion and Diversity Excellence) Framework and Toolkit\, this session will provide an introductory overview to this important work in schools. \n\n\nGaelle is Head of Research Services and Inclusion and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East. \n\n\n\nSafeguarding and Information Sharing with Dale Wilkins\, Director of Safeguarding Professional Development and Accreditation\, BSA Group \nThis session will look at safeguarding concerns and considerations with a focus on assessing and minimising risk.  Relevant legislation and Information sharing and handling. \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards.  In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses.  Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter\, the annual Safeguarding Conference\, the Safeguarding Forum. DESCRIPTION:🏷️ From £135\n🎧 School nurses\, pastoral leads\, inclusion leads\, boarding staff\n📍 Online \n\nCourse outline: \nThe aim of this half day seminar is to provide an opportunity to learn more about the importance of the management system of the brain – known as executive functioning skills and to consider strategies that can be used to support pupils.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe three main areas of working memory\, cognitive flexibility (flexible thinking) and inhibitory control (including self-control) will be unpacked. When people struggle with executive function\, it impacts them at home\, in school\, and in life because the skills involved support goal setting\, planning\, and completing tasks. \nExecutive function is responsible for many skills including: paying attention; organizing\, planning\, and prioritising; starting tasks and staying focused on them to completion; understanding different points of view; regulating emotions and self-monitoring. Executive functioning skills usually develop quickly in early childhood and into the teen years but are still developing into the mid-20s. Some people struggle with EF\, and this can cause challenges during childhood\, as a teenager and young adult. \nWe will hear from an EF expert about what executive function skills are and how they impact our lives. We will also hear directly from school staff about adjustments and proactive work that has made a positive impact in their settings. \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAttending this half day seminar will help delegates increase their knowledge and understanding of the importance of supporting executive functioning for all pupils\, but particularly for those who have weaker EF function. Philip also quality assured the Home Office Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Service (HSBSS) where he oversaw and triaged all the requests for support and advised personally on all the complex cases. Wayne partners and collaborates with a diverse range of organisations across Ireland\, the UK\, Europe\, Canada\, USA and the Middle East\, delivering in-person and virtual training. \n  \n\nJane McGarrigle – National Coordinator\, Webwise  \nJane oversees the development and delivery of Webwise – the Irish internet safety awareness centre. Within her 9 years\, Jane has led the development of a range of award-winning internet safety programmes for children\, parents\, teachers and schools. McGarrigle also has responsibility for the coordination and promotion of Safer Internet Day in Ireland.  Jane sits on the Steering Committee of Media Literacy Ireland\, is an active member of the Insafe network and recently sat on the Department of Education Anti-Bullying Steering Committee and the National Advisory Council for Online Safety. \n\n \nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA in 2017 to lead safeguarding\, inspection\, and compliance across the UK\, building on his experience as a course tutor since 1998. He works closely with ISI\, Ofsted\, and DfE\, and oversees the Group’s work in Scotland and Wales. A trainer and consultant for BSA and SACPA\, Dale is Vice Chair of SAFCAB. Previously\, he was a boarding practitioner for 31 years\, including Housemaster and Deputy Head at Old Swinford Hospital. He also trains for the Methodist Church\, is a trustee of the National Youth String Orchestra\, chairs a performing arts charity\, and volunteers in sport and Scouting. \n\n \nBethan Hudson MTIOB\, Executive Director\, Consultancy and Director\, BAISIS/HIEDA \nBethan joined the BSA team as Training Manager in September 2017. She has worked in two independent boarding schools in the UK and Switzerland\, where she was Housemistress to 36 pupils. After Switzerland\, she became Pastoral Manager at an inner-city state academy before leading the Debrett’s Foundation training programme. At BSA\, Bethan plans and manages Day Seminars\, Conferences\, INSET\, and Consultancy\, as well as serving as Director of BAISIS. Passionate about CPD\, she believes boarding can be a powerful force for young people and is committed to ensuring staff are fully equipped to support their needs. \n\nDavid Walker FTIOB\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director\, BSA/TIOB \nDavid Walker has over 20 years’ experience in boarding education\, having worked in a variety of schools across the UK and Africa. His career includes leadership roles in both senior and prep school settings\, complemented by service as a prep school governor and trustee of a multi-academy trust. Before joining the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-educational independent school in the South-East\, where he oversaw student welfare and pastoral care. His extensive background in safeguarding\, boarding leadership\, and governance gives him a broad perspective on the sector\, enabling him to support schools in delivering outstanding pastoral provision. \n\nKathleen Sweeney\, Scotland and All-Ireland Regional Secretary\, ISBA \nKathleen joined ISBA in April 2023\, bringing over 16 years of experience as a Bursar in a Scottish independent school and six years on the Board of the Scottish Council of Independent Schools. Well known in the sector\, she understands the challenges facing Scottish members and is keen to learn from Irish and Northern Irish colleagues. Before becoming a Bursar\, she spent 21 years in Higher Education and now serves on the Board of a Further Education College\, giving her deep insight across all levels of education. \n\nKen James\, General Manager\, Letz Live  \nKen is the General Manager of Letz Live\, which provides gap assistants and graduates to over 80 schools and activity centres across the world.  He’s a former head of a Letz Live school and has over 20 years. experience in boarding\, both in the UK and Australia.  He oversees the recruitment of 800 participants each year in the UK\, Australia\, New Zealand\, Thailand and Ireland.  Chair and vice-chair of two governing bodies\, he remains active within the sector and is available to provide support and advice to partner schools both before and during placements. \n\n \nDr Joanne Ladds\, Associate Education Consultant\, Noble+Eaton
