He is a WRAW Master Practitioner\, trained by the Wellbeing Project\, and offers life coaching\, diagnostic assessments\, workshops and seminars. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. She has also worked with IESE reviewing literature and resources to ensure they promote equity\, diversity and inclusion. \n  \n \nGaelle Sullivan\, Director of Research\, Inclusion and IELA \nGaelle is Director of Research\, Inclusion and IELA and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. She holds Bachelors degrees in English and Childhood and Youth studies\, a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics\, a Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Psychology and is a qualified and accredited CBT practitioner. Shirley has written multiple health and wellbeing programmes and has travelled to european schools delivering training in the implementation of these. This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to Boarding. The sooner staff new to Boarding have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in Boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise. \nThis seminar will cover the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and meeting boarders’ needs. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. It will consider lifestyle adjustments that can be made and also support strategies for those with medical conditions affecting their bowel and/or bladders. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nAn overview of the common conditions that can affect bladder and bowel function.\nManagement strategies for these conditions\nAdvice and support for those suffering with conditions affecting their bowel or bladder.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nTo understand the signs and symptoms of medical conditions affecting bowel and bladder function.\nTo gain an understanding of lifestyle changes that can be made which can alleviate some of the symptoms\nTo be confident in advising someone of strategies which will improve their condition.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nBrenda Cheer\, Paediatric Specialist Continence Nurse & ERIC Nurse \nBrenda started her nursing career in London in 1983. After her general training Brenda specialised in children’s nursing\, and over the years has worked with adults and children\, in London and Cardiff in both hospital and community settings. Since 2002 she has focussed on paediatric continence\, working as Paediatric Specialist Continence Nurse at the University Hospital of Wales until summer 2018. \nBrenda currently works two days a week as ERIC Nurse\, the first person to take on this role\, originally funded by the Department of Health. She works a further day a week as Paediatric Continence Nurse for Shine: Spina Bifida\, Hydrocephalus Information\, Networking and Equality. \nThe ERIC Nurse post was created to seek ways to improve early intervention into childhood continence problems. Brenda strives to increase awareness of children’s bladder and bowel health\, by designing easy-to-understand information for parents and providing training for health care professionals and early year’s workers. She has produced a generic Children’s Continence Pathway\, which ERIC is promoting as a model of best practice. The ERIC Nurse project won a prestigious Nursing Times Award in 2016\, and has stimulated articles in the nursing press. Brenda has re-written many of the ERIC leaflets\, and is enjoying working at the heart of the charity she supports. \nWhen she is not busy with her regular jobs\, Brenda is much in demand as a freelance trainer and speaker. In her rare moments of spare time she enjoys the company of her three children and her husband John\, a musician and music therapist.

Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nMark Brooks\, MBA\, Director\, Brooks Education \nMark began his career as a marketing executive with the Financial Times in London and moved on to become the marketing manager for a theological college\, and then for a leading boarding school in Oxfordshire. At both establishments Mark revolutionised the student recruitment processes and saw pupil numbers reach record levels. During this time\, he also completed an MBA\, focusing on schools marketing. His specialisms are marketing strategy\, school turnaround and boarding recruitment. He has advised heads and governors at major IAPS\, HMC and GSA schools in the UK and overseas. Mark has worked with the British Council\, and leading schools such as Roedean\, Junior King’s Canterbury\, Wycliffe College\, Dulwich College and over 100 others. He is a regular conference speaker (IPSEF\, AGBIS\, British Council\, AMDIS\, BBSW\, and APEN). His Masters in Business Administration (MBA) focused on school strategy and marketing\, his final year was sponsored by the Independent Schools Council (ISC). Mark visits at least two independent schools a week and runs marketing initiatives overseas. \n\nMatt Albrighton\, Headmaster\, Burford School  \nBefore working in boarding Matthew worked in the Boys day Sector at KES Edgbaston and Warwick school. Alongside his role as Head of Geography at Wellington College\, Matthew coordinated the introduction of the IB Middle Years Programme for students in years 9-11. Carrying principles from the IB forward to St Edward’s he developed an alternative series of qualifications to sit within a middle school suite alongside GCSE.  This involved working with the support of Buckingham University to create a rigorous moderation and authentication process. \nMatthew has an almost fervent belief in the value of a broad curriculum in supporting the development of a young person. He is an advocate of the maintenance of sport and the Arts alongside more stereotypical classroom learning all the way through to 18. With this in mind he advocates curriculums such as the IB diploma and perhaps a little overzealous about the Theory of Knowledge course. \nMatthew has held a post on senior leadership for 12 years\, 9 years at St Edwards as Deputy Head Academic and then latterly as Headteacher at Burford School\, an academy of 1500 students in the Cotswolds with Boarding House attached. Throughout Matthew has had oversight of the appraisal process and recognises the importance of defining an overarching educational philosophy to provide guard rails for staff motivation. \n\nSteve Gardner\, Deputy Head\, Holyport \nSteve is the Deputy Head Master at Holyport College\, where he leads on behaviour and boarding. He has worked in boarding schools for 18 years as a teacher of Drama and Theatre Studies\, alongside boarding roles that include House Tutor\, Housemaster and Director of Boarding. Steve led Holyport through a significant pastoral restructure in 2021 that not only gained an upgrade of Ofsted’s judgements but also instigated an increased commitment to staff wellbeing. \n  \n\nHelen Cullen\, Head\, Sexeys \nHelen is Headteacher of Sexey’s School\, an 11-18 years Church of England SBS. Having previously been a Pastoral middle and senior leader well being of staff and students is something Helen is passionate about and during the schools improvement journey has been a key priority. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

This inevitably overlaps with the question of sex and gender and Joanna has particular interest in how schools support and safeguard trans-gender people. \n\n \nRhiannon Williams\, Senior Director (Safeguarding\, Legal and Complaints)\, Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) \nRhiannon was formerly Director of Studies at a large day and boarding prep school for children aged 3-13. \nRhiannon has worked in the education sector for over a decade\, prior to which she was an environmental lawyer. This included working in regulatory compliance at the European Commission\, and as a university lecturer and researcher. \nRhiannon is a former solicitor\, whose qualifications include PGCE (Cantab)\, MA Law (Cantab) and Licence Spéciale en Droit Européen (ULB). \n\n \nAlex Large\, Head of Boarding\, The Royal School\, Wolverhampton \nDespite trying his best not to follow in his father’s footsteps\, Alex opted to study economics at Newcastle University but still ended up becoming a maths teacher. As a day pupil at Taunton School\, he spent many evenings in the company of the boarders there while his father did evening duties or stayed to finish his marking. This is where the fascination with boarding began and is now a self-confessed boarding enthusiast. Currently the Head of Boarding and a member of the Senior Leadership Team at The Royal School\, Wolverhampton\, Alex has developed excellent links with charities and external government agencies to support the pastoral needs of boarders at school\, culminating in national recognition with both individual and school awards. \nAlex lives onsite with his wife\, Sarah\, and their two young sons – Harry and Thomas who want to become the next Ben Stokes and Rory McIlroy respectively. During the winter he plays 1st XI hockey for Finchfield\, whilst in the summer holidays he can be found on his paddleboard in Barmouth Bay. \n\n \nMadeleine Killacky\, Housemistress and Mathematics Teacher\, Moreton Hall School \nMadeleine Killacky is a Housemistress and Mathematics teacher at Moreton Hall School in Shropshire. She was awarded the BSA Research Fellowship for 2023-24 and is currently researching creativity and unstructured play in boarding settings. \n  \n  \n\nNaima Charlier\, Director of Equality\, Diversity\, Inclusion\, and Social Responsibility\, Wellington College \nNaima Charlier brings over 25 years of teaching experience\, including more than 20 years in international school settings across the UK\, USA\, Romania\, and Hong Kong. With a background spanning Early Years\, Primary\, and Secondary education\, she has held various leadership roles for over 16 years\, including Founding Head\, Deputy Principal\, and Director of Teaching and Learning. Naima holds an MBA in International Educational Leadership from UCL and serves as a Lead Improvement Partner for COBIS. She advocates passionately for inclusive leadership and prioritises EDI initiatives in schools. \n  \n\nMartin Reader\, Headmaster\, Cranleigh School \nMartin Reader is currently Head of Cranleigh School. He began his teaching career at St Edward’s Oxford\, before moving to Oundle School and then to Reigate Grammar School where he was Senior Deputy Head. Prior to moving to Cranleigh\, he was Headmaster of Wellington School\, Somerset for eight years. Passionate about boarding\, he served as Chair of the BSA in 2018\, and Vice Chair in 2017 and 2019. He is also a trustee of the BSA Foundation and the Hawk and Owl Trust. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Institute of Boarding. \n\nAreti Bizior\, Headmistress\, Luckley House School \nAreti is the Headmistress at Luckley House School. Prior to that\, she was Deputy Headmistress at Downe House for seven years\, Assistant Headmistress at Queen Anne’s School in Caversham and Head of House at St. George’s\, Ascot. Areti holds an MBA from UCL\, alongside a BSc\, BEd and PGCE. She is an Inspector for ISI and a published author. Areti is a member of the Executive Committee of the BSA and sits on various Advisory Boards and Governing Bodies. \n  \n\nSpeakers from the BSA Team: \nDavid Walker\, Executive Director\, Boarding\, BSA Group \nDavid is the Executive Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\nGaelle Sullivan\, Research and Inclusion Director\, BSA Group \nGaelle is Head of Research Services and Inclusion and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\nLee Glaser\, Director\, Hieda and Group Services Director\, BSA Group \nLee has extensive experience in pastoral care. Prior to becoming Headmaster and CEO at Taunton School in Somerset he was the School’s Deputy Head which involved leading the pastoral team and being the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Outstanding support for student and staff wellbeing has always been at the heart of his approach and the School was recently shortlisted for a TES Award for excellence in this area. \nLee has always worked closely with the School’s medical team which provided excellent support to the community\, particularly during the COVID pandemic.
