DESCRIPTION:🏷️ From £175\n🎧 Safeguarding Leads\, Governors\, Trustees\n📍 Online \n\nCourse outline: \nSchools have become familiar with the requirements of the regular inspection process. This virtual day seminar is aimed both at those who are familiar with the process and those completely new to it. The day focuses on the process itself\, preparation for forthcoming inspection visits\, and relevant updates on new legislation that could impact an inspection result. \nThroughout the session\, information and actions will refer to the National Minimum Standards 2022\, as well as referencing appropriate updates to other guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education 2025. \nThere will be specific breakout sessions during the day to focus on ISI or Ofsted as appropriate. Reference will therefore be made to either the ISI Framework and inspection process\, including Framework 23\, or the Ofsted SCCIF (Social Care Common Inspection Framework).  This training aims to be relevant and valuable regardless of where schools are in the inspection cycle. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nUpdates to current guidance – including KCSIE 2025 and the National Minimum Standards 2022\nPreparing for inspection – gathering evidence relating to the ISI or Ofsted inspection framework\nGoing beyond the minimum standard – securing the best outcomes for pupils\, actions that go beyond the minimum standards\nEmbedding a regular audit procedure – looking at the process of review and reflection and establishing a long-term process beyond the inspection cycle.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nRecommendations of how to prepare for an inspection\nIncreased understanding of relevant legislative and guidance updates\nRecommendations for conducting a regular audit procedure.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker:  \nSpeaker: Dale Wilkins FTIOB\, Executive Director\, BSA Group Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA in 2017 to lead safeguarding\, inspection\, and compliance across the UK\, building on his experience as a course tutor since 1998. The three intensive study days involve a mixture of short lectures\, presentations and discussions led by students\, together with group problem solving exercises and case studies. Group discussion is a particularly important aspect of this course\, enabling you to look at the theory in the light of your own practical experience. You will be encouraged to contribute ideas\, opinions and questions\, take responsibility for your own learning and\, by sharing\, to contribute to the learning of the group as a whole. \nBetween sessions you will be expected to do some reading\, thinking and discussing with colleagues in your school and with your mentor. Before each study day\, you will be expected to spend some time on the preparatory tasks in the course booklet and using the course sessions reflect on your own boarding school situation. The follow up tasks will help you to focus on practical ways of applying ideas and theories in the boarding setting. \nYou will also be required to keep a professional file during the course containing brief notes\, ideas\, action points\, and activities and issues to take back to the workplace. The course booklet will give you a number of relevant tasks to think about\, providing opportunities to record your thoughts. This file is itself not directly assessed but will provide essential material to draw upon when you write up your chosen assessment topic. \nThe Course Assignment is a written project of ~2500 words on a topic directly related to the pastoral care/management of international students. The topic will benefit both the student and their school in developing their understanding of best practice in relation to supporting international students. Guidance on selecting a suitable topic\, and on how to write up and submit the assignment will be provided in the course booklet and by the tutors on the course. \nMain course sessions include: \nThe Pastoral Care & Boarding Wellbeing of International Students \nDeveloping strategies and practice \nIntegration and the whole school approach \nNOTE: Students will need attend all study days and successfully complete the assignment in order to gain the course certificate. \nWhat support will I receive during the course? \nYou will receive support throughout the course from the BSA\, the course tutor and from your school mentor. \nCourse tutors \nYour BSA course tutor will be a senior member of staff with considerable experience in boarding education. He or she will: \n● provide personal and professional help and encouragement; \n● work with you in discussion groups and tutorial sessions during the course; \n● liaise with your school mentor; \n● review and provide feedback on your proposed assessment task; \n● advise and support you with your assignment and review progress regularly; \n● mark your assignment. \nCourse Tutors are:  \n  \nSchool Mentors \nAll participants on the course should have the support of a mentor\, appointed and approved by the Head. An effective partnership between you and your mentor will have significant benefits in terms of challenge and stimulation for you both and also offers an opportunity for fresh insight into boarding issues for the school. \nThe role is best undertaken by a colleague who really knows and understands your work and has an experienced overview of boarding. Your mentor should support you professionally while you undertake the course\, encouraging you in the process of reflection and helping you to develop your professional competence. \nKey tasks for mentors are: \n● allowing time for regular discussion and ensuring regular formal meetings; \n● helping you to identify relevant skills and appropriate coursework tasks for your professional and personal development; \n● helping you to set realistic targets for progress and to meet them; \n● reviewing progress with you and providing constructive feedback; \n● challenging and supporting you in reflecting on and evaluating your work. \nHow is the course assessed? \nYou will produce a reflective essay or report of approx. 2500 words\, drawing on material from the professional log you have kept throughout the course. The course content was not only strategically insightful but also effective in developing my understanding of the subject matter. \nThe course’s structure and coverage of key themes\, such as the strategic nature and importance of the international boarding market\, the motivations behind international students seeking a British education\, and the nuanced exploration of cultural identity\, cultural values\, and cultural differences\, were all rich\, engaging\, and detailed. Working with peers to explore such topics allowed me to gain a deeper insight into the dynamics of the international education landscape and the factors influencing students’ choices. \nThe key areas for me\, related to induction\, culture shock\, and integration. He is also an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU safer internet programme. \n  \n\nMarcus Erooga : Independent Safeguarding Consultant \nMarcus is an independent safeguarding and sexual abuse Consultant\, Researcher & Trainer. From 1999-2018 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield Centre for Applied Childhood\, Youth and Family Studies. He spent the majority of his employed career in various positions at the NSPCC\, as a practitioner\, team manager and Assistant Director for service delivery as well as service and policy development roles relating to child sexual abuse and sexual offending. \nHe has authored or edited some 80 publications on child abuse and sex offender related issues. Most recently this work has focused on organisational safeguarding. In 2016 he co-authored a review of the literature on organisational risk & protective factors for the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse as well as being Expert Witness on grooming in a Royal Commission Case Study. He is an Expert Witness for the IICSA (the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse) Residential Schools inquiry. \nAs an independent consultant Marcus regularly trains and presents based on his research and undertakes safeguarding work including audits & reviews for a range of organisations. DESCRIPTION:🏷️ From £175\n🎧 Boarding staff\, Head of Boarding\, staff moving to a new house or team\n📍 Online \n\nCourse outline: \nTaking on a new boarding house can be daunting\, especially alongside all the other duties in a busy school life. This seminar aims to help prospective houseparents get ahead of the game and make the first few weeks in post less stressful and more productive. \nBoarding students need continuity of care and a consistent approach to school processes. Schools need boarding staff who are happy and will stay in post. A positive start for a houseparent encourages long service and gives confidence to students and parents. \nThis seminar will explore the many factors and issues associated with taking on a new boarding house. Promotion to houseparent and additional responsibility for running a house is exciting\, but it can also be stressful. The training day will provide an opportunity for delegates to think about the ethos for their new house\, review and consider key issues for students\, staff\, policies and procedures and the demands of managing the physical building. The day will finish by looking at the elusive work-life balance and ways in which this can be achieved during a hectic life in a busy boarding school. \nIn advance of this session\, it would be helpful for delegates to have an overview of their school’s policies and procedures\, and those of the boarding house they are moving into. However\, staff CPD opportunities seldom focus on these key areas. \n As part of a refocus of the training available through the BSA Group and Hieda\, we can now offer a standalone Professional Practice Certificate for school staff on medical matters. \nThis course will link professional practice with current research and best practice to provide a unique opportunity for non-registered medical staff\, whether working in relative isolation or as part of the medical team\, to develop their knowledge\, skills and practice across a wide range of the key current themes/topics most relevant to their role. Previously\, he was a boarding practitioner for 31 years\, including Housemaster and Deputy Head at Old Swinford Hospital. He also trains for the Methodist Church\, is a trustee of the National Youth String Orchestra\, chairs a performing arts charity\, and volunteers in sport and Scouting. \n\nDr Mariya Ali\, Director\, SACPA \nMariya Ali is Director of SACPA and an internationally recognised safeguarding and child protection expert. With over two decades’ multidisciplinary experience in legal\, academic\, advisory\, and leadership roles\, she is strongly committed to advancing child rights and welfare. Formerly Deputy Minister in the Maldives\, she led national reforms in child protection policy and legislation. She was a boarding inspector for Ofsted and then ISI\, and she’s held the role of Deputy Head\, Pastoral at The King’s School\, Canterbury for a number of years now although she would argue that whilst the title stays the same the role evolves constantly. \n\nCamilla Luard\, Head of Boarding\, Bilton Grange School \nCamilla is Head of Boarding at Bilton Grange\, a prep school where boarding sits at the heart of daily life.
