From recognising how children and young people grieve and the physiological impact of grief\, to supporting young children in coping with a return to ‘normal’ activities after suffering a loss\, this seminar will equip delegates with a clearer understanding of how to help. \nThe focus will be on the age range of 8-18 years\, but may go beyond these years to account for developmental variations. The session will also consider the child in the context of the boarding school ‘family’\, and the role pastoral staff in particular\, can play. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nPrevalence of childhood bereavement – in context\nUsual reactions to grief and developmental variations of grief\nTheories of grief\nThe roles that schools play in supporting bereaved children and young people\nCommunication – with the child\, family\, staff\, students\, and wider school community\nHelping children understand their feelings\nWhen to seek more help\nSelf-care.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the impact of loss and bereavement on young people\, including the physical and psychological impact of grief\nRecommended actions to help children and young people understand their feelings\nSignposting to additional support and when to access this.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nNicola Ellis-Jones\, Training Partnerships Practitioner\, Winston’s Wish.  \nAn experienced teacher and trainer of over 15 years\, Nicola also has a background in working with vulnerable families in the community\, having worked with both Women’s Aid\, and with the local Family Learning Team for Adult Education. \nAs a training partnerships practitioner for Winston’s Wish\, Nicola is part of a team who provides training for teachers\, youth workers and other professionals to enable them to better support grieving children and young people in their care. On average\, 1 in every 29 children will be bereaved of a parent or sibling – that’s one per class. \nWinston’s Wish was the UK’s first childhood bereavement charity\, and has been supporting bereaved children and young people for over 30 years\, providing emotional and practical bereavement support to children\, young people and those who care for them.

This seminar aims to help prospective Houseparents get ahead of the game and make the first few weeks in post less stressful and more productive for all concerned. \nBoarding students need continuity of care and a consistent approach to school processes. Schools need boarding staff who are happy and will stay in post for a good amount of time. A positive start for a Houseparent encourages longevity of service and gives confidence to students\, and their parents\, alike. \nThis seminar will explore the many factors and issues associated with taking on a new boarding house. Promotion to Houseparent and additional responsibility for running a house is exciting\, but it can also be stressful. The training day will provide an opportunity for delegates to think about the ethos for their new house\, review and consider key issues relating to students\, staff\, policies and procedures as well as the demands of managing the physical building itself. The day will finish by looking at the elusive work life balance and ways in which this can be achieved during a hectic life in a busy boarding school. \nIn advance of this session\, it would be helpful for delegates to have an overview of the schools’ policies and procedures\, and those of the boarding house they are moving into if they differ from the schools’. Delegates are recommended to reflect in advance on what values they want particularly to promote to their boarders. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe ethos of your new boarding house - this session will explore how to develop an individual identity for your new boarding house that fits within the overall ethos of the school\nThe perfect house\, team and boarder - in this session the group will focus on ways to develop all aspects of a boarding house to achieve the best possible results for all concerned; students and house team\nManaging the team – in this session the group will look at ways to effectively manage the various stakeholders within and alongside a boarding house\nDeveloping a good work life balance - some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy\, safe and enjoying your new role of Houseparent!\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nTime to reflect on the ethos and character of your new house\nIdeas to strengthen the identity of your house and the community within it\nRecommendations on managing a small team\nRecommendations on developing a work/life balance that benefits you and the boarding community.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

DESCRIPTION:Date: June 28\, 2024 \nTime: 14:00 – 16:00\nCost: SACPA/BSA Member Rate: £110\, Non-member Rate: £220*\nAudience:  This seminar is for safeguarding practitioners and leaders who may work or be working with children\, their families and other professionals where children are subject to financially motivated extortion and technology assisted child sexual abuse.\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – seminar\n\n\nCourse outline: \nThe NCA and CEOP report significant increases in children and young people being forced to meet financial demands after being threatened with the release of nudes or semi-nudes\, and this crime of blackmail is referred to as `sextortion’. \nThis interactive seminar seeks to bring safeguarding practitioners together to explore\, debate and reflect on the phenomena of sextortion.  Led by a specialist in technology assisted child sexual abuse who will lead the seminar and answer questions on this area of safeguarding practice.  The seminar aims to provide a space for practice reflection that prepares safeguarding practitioners to identify\, respond and support children affected by sextortion and related harms. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nWhat is financially motivated sexual extortion and how does the Nudes and Semi-Nudes Guidance help us\nWhat does the voice and experience of children affected tell us\nHow can internal processes and multi-agency safeguarding systems support or re-traumatise child victims\nWhat are the implications for future practice and preventative work with children\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nDevelop understanding of financially motivated sexual extortion\nUnderstand how the latest Nudes and Semi-Nudes guidance supports safeguarding work\nConsider the lived experience of affected children including victim blaming and possible re-traumatisation\nEngage in interactive and reflective discussion\, sharing experiences and debating practice dilemmas\nInform future policy and practice development within their setting to better identify\, respond and prevent financially motivated extortion\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nPhilip Baines\, Safeguarding and Training Consultant \nPhilip was a Detective having spent 30 years in the police. The last 14 years of his police service was in the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU). He is also qualified as the following: \n\nFamily Liaison Officer (FLO)\nDisaster Victim Identification Officer (DVI)\nSignificant Witness interviewer (Sig Wit)\nEnhanced Cognitive Witness Interviewer\nDomestic Abuse Officer\nPIP Level 2 investigator\nAchieving Best Evidence (ABE- VRI vulnerable and intimidated witness interviewer)\nSpecialist Child Abuse Investigative Development Programme (SCAIDP)\nJoint Investigator – Section 47 Children Act ‘89\n\nPhilip was also seconded to the Training Department for 2 years\, where he received qualifications in training and delivered all these subjects\, including Harmful Sexual Behaviours (HSB). \nPhilip is a qualified AIM3 Assessor of children displaying HSB. \nPhilip also quality assured the Home Office Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Service (HSBSS) where he oversaw and triaged all the requests for support and advised personally on all the complex cases. \nPhilip supports survivors and families who have been victim of all types of abuse\, including technology assisted child sexual abuse (TACSA) through his work as a consultant for the Marie Collins Foundation. \n

Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the day to day lives of all within the boarding house\, and community. \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis.

He then headed back to Oxford in 1999\, to become Head of History at St Edward’s School and then a Housemaster. While there\, he continued with his rugby refereeing\, coaching U16s rugby and U15s rowing\, and ran the naval section of the CCF. \nIn 2007\, Mark was appointed Deputy Headmaster and Head of Boarding at Felsted School in Essex\, where he maintained his coaching and teaching roles. It was from there\, in 2010\, that he headed north\, to take on the role of Headmaster at Ashville College in Harrogate\, an HMC co-educational day and boarding school with 870 pupils. He has been an ISI team inspector\, a school governor and Chair of the Boarding School’s Association and is now in his seventh year as Headmaster of Strathallan School. \nMark is married to music teacher Caroline\, and has two sons\, both now at university. In his spare time\, he enjoys wild camping in the Scottish islands and walking in the hills.

Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England.

After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to Boarding. The sooner staff new to Boarding have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in Boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise. \nThis seminar will cover the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and meeting boarders’ needs. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. In advance of the seminar\, it is recommended that delegates have familiarised themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the Boarding section of the schools’ website and promotional material that relate to boarding. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nSafeguarding and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding – this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools\nMeeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding\, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by the pastoral team\nUnderstanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school\nWorking safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy\, safe and enjoying your role in boarding!\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding\, and their role within that\nAn increased confidence to be able to support the young people in your care\nIncreased awareness of the legal context\, safeguarding and National Minimum Standards for Boarding\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

After her general training Brenda specialised in children’s nursing\, and over the years has worked with adults and children\, in London and Cardiff in both hospital and community settings. Since 2002 she has focussed on paediatric continence\, working as Paediatric Specialist Continence Nurse at the University Hospital of Wales until summer 2018. \nBrenda currently works two days a week as ERIC Nurse\, the first person to take on this role\, originally funded by the Department of Health. She works a further day a week as Paediatric Continence Nurse for Shine: Spina Bifida\, Hydrocephalus Information\, Networking and Equality. \nThe ERIC Nurse post was created to seek ways to improve early intervention into childhood continence problems. Brenda strives to increase awareness of children’s bladder and bowel health\, by designing easy-to-understand information for parents and providing training for health care professionals and early year’s workers. She has produced a generic Children’s Continence Pathway\, which ERIC is promoting as a model of best practice. The ERIC Nurse project won a prestigious Nursing Times Award in 2016\, and has stimulated articles in the nursing press. Brenda has re-written many of the ERIC leaflets\, and is enjoying working at the heart of the charity she supports. \nWhen she is not busy with her regular jobs\, Brenda is much in demand as a freelance trainer and speaker. In her rare moments of spare time she enjoys the company of her three children and her husband John\, a musician and music therapist.

He is a Trustee and has participated in school governance in this role or as a governor for over 20 years. \nHe co-founded a national charity taking Olympians into schools to support the 2012 games\, with over 250\,000 students benefiting from the programme. He founded Welbee\, a highly effective staff wellbeing measurement and improvement platform\, creating a systemised process with a focus on helping schools to take action and deliver change. \nHis second book\, “What makes teachers unhappy and what can you do about it? He is responsible for the pastoral life of the school\, looking after boarding\, the house system\, wellbeing and health care and the co-curricular life of the school. Prior to joining DLD College\, James spent 14 years at St John’s School\, Leatherhead\, where he was Assistant Head (Boarding and Co-Curricular)\, having been both a Head of Department and Housemaster of the largest boys’ boarding house in the school before this. Outside of this\, he is Chair of Governors at a special school in the state sector\, and a team manager for the Surrey Schools’ Athletics Team. James is currently studying for an EdD\, focusing on coaching and culture.

Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors. \n

He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society\, and regularly writes resources for schools on natural hazards and environmental change. \n\nDavid Walker\, Director\, BSA \nDavid is the BSA Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\n \nDale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nMark Brooks\, MBA\, Director\, Brooks Education \nMark began his career as a marketing executive with the Financial Times in London and moved on to become the marketing manager for a theological college\, and then for a leading boarding school in Oxfordshire. At both establishments Mark revolutionised the student recruitment processes and saw pupil numbers reach record levels. During this time\, he also completed an MBA\, focusing on schools marketing. His specialisms are marketing strategy\, school turnaround and boarding recruitment. He has advised heads and governors at major IAPS\, HMC and GSA schools in the UK and overseas. Mark has worked with the British Council\, and leading schools such as Roedean\, Junior King’s Canterbury\, Wycliffe College\, Dulwich College and over 100 others. He is a regular conference speaker (IPSEF\, AGBIS\, British Council\, AMDIS\, BBSW\, and APEN). His Masters in Business Administration (MBA) focused on school strategy and marketing\, his final year was sponsored by the Independent Schools Council (ISC). Mark visits at least two independent schools a week and runs marketing initiatives overseas. \n\nMatt Albrighton\, Headmaster\, Burford School  \nBefore working in boarding Matthew worked in the Boys day Sector at KES Edgbaston and Warwick school. Alongside his role as Head of Geography at Wellington College\, Matthew coordinated the introduction of the IB Middle Years Programme for students in years 9-11. Carrying principles from the IB forward to St Edward’s he developed an alternative series of qualifications to sit within a middle school suite alongside GCSE.  This involved working with the support of Buckingham University to create a rigorous moderation and authentication process. \nMatthew has an almost fervent belief in the value of a broad curriculum in supporting the development of a young person. He is an advocate of the maintenance of sport and the Arts alongside more stereotypical classroom learning all the way through to 18. With this in mind he advocates curriculums such as the IB diploma and perhaps a little overzealous about the Theory of Knowledge course. \nMatthew has held a post on senior leadership for 12 years\, 9 years at St Edwards as Deputy Head Academic and then latterly as Headteacher at Burford School\, an academy of 1500 students in the Cotswolds with Boarding House attached. Throughout Matthew has had oversight of the appraisal process and recognises the importance of defining an overarching educational philosophy to provide guard rails for staff motivation. \n\nSteve Gardner\, Deputy Head\, Holyport \nSteve is the Deputy Head Master at Holyport College\, where he leads on behaviour and boarding. He has worked in boarding schools for 18 years as a teacher of Drama and Theatre Studies\, alongside boarding roles that include House Tutor\, Housemaster and Director of Boarding. Steve led Holyport through a significant pastoral restructure in 2021 that not only gained an upgrade of Ofsted’s judgements but also instigated an increased commitment to staff wellbeing. \n  \n\nHelen Cullen\, Head\, Sexeys \nHelen is Headteacher of Sexey’s School\, an 11-18 years Church of England SBS. Having previously been a Pastoral middle and senior leader well being of staff and students is something Helen is passionate about and during the schools improvement journey has been a key priority. Helen considers herself very fortunate to have the team of staff at Sexey’s that she does and so is always committed to considering and exploring further strategies to support staff well being and in turn recruitment and retention. \n  \n\nMark Heywood\, Principal\, Royal Wolverhampton  \nCurrently Principal/CEO of The Royal School\, Wolverhampton an all-through\, co-ed\, non-selective day and state boarding school of some 1500 pupils in the West Midlands.  Has been in post since 2011\, converting from independent school to State Free School/Academy in 2016.  Over past 40 years he has worked in state and independent schools\, boarding and day settings in London\, Cumbria\, Tyneside and now West Midlands. \nThe Royal School has developed experience in working with Looked After Children (LAC) and UASC for a number of years\, the work of which featured in the Independent Review into Children’s Social Care report of 2022 and works closely with the RNSCF Springboard Trust on their Expert Advisory Group to the Government on the potential benefits of boarding in working with vulnerable children. \nMark has taught geography\, geology\, PE and Games and has a passion for outdoor education and international expeditions. \n\nJonathan Webb\, Head\, Ripon Grammar \nJonathan has been head at Ripon Grammar for nearly 7 years. He was previously Deputy Head at Durham school\, having been a Head of Department at Pocklington School. Jonathan began his career at Giggleswick and Manchester Grammar School. \n  \n  \n\nRailton Blyth\, Director of Safeguarding at The Circle Trust \nMember of the Education & Welfare Committee. Lead Governor for: Safeguarding \nRailton is the Director of Safeguarding for The Circle Trust as well as Senior Deputy Headteacher at St Crispin’s School. He was previously a PiXL (Partners in Excellence) associate\, managed and chaired the local Designated Safeguarding leads network and Secondary Behaviour Leads group as well as chairing the Wokingham Primary/Secondary liaison group. He is currently a Trustee for a local charity that seeks to support young people in navigating their teenage years. \nA Historian by training\, Railton’s passion lays in Inclusion and Outdoor Education. Her role also included insulin pumps starts\, and she held nurse-led clinics\, which aimed to provide extra support and motivation for young people struggling to manage their diabetes. Kirsty was actively involved in educating others to support children and YP with Diabetes\, for example providing training days for nurses and other staff in schools. Kirsty’s Masters’ Dissertation Research Project looked into best ways of educating school staff around Diabetes. The aim is to support clinical staff with their training and development needs\, help them to raise the standards of care provided in schools and meet the needs of CPD as part of their revalidation.
