He was recently part of an expert steering group with TikTok looking at harmful and dangerous online challenges. \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. \nAs an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents\, teachers and governors to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 16 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has recently worked with a team developing a national online safety strategy in Rwanda and chaired the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance.

Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \nDavid Walker\, Director\, BSA \nDavid is the BSA Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\n \nStuart Westley\, Independent Consultant \nAfter attending Lancaster Royal Grammar School\, Stuart read Law at Corpus Christi College Oxford\, representing the University at rugby and cricket and achieving a degree. After a brief\, unspectacular spell as a professional cricketer with Gloucestershire County Cricket Club\, he taught mathematics at Framlingham College where he was also Master in Charge of Cricket\, Housemaster and Director of Studies. \nIn 1984 he moved to be Deputy Head\, Bristol Cathedral School\, now an academy but then an independent day school which educated the Cathedral Choristers. In 1989 he became Principal\, King William’s College\, Isle of Man and from 1996 to 2009 was Master of Haileybury. Haileybury became a fully co-educational school in 1998\, having admitted girls to its Sixth Form in 1973. The International Baccalaureate Diploma has been taught alongside A Level at Haileybury since1999. \nIn 2009 Stuart became General Secretary of the Association of Governors of Independent Schools (AGBIS) whose purpose was\, and is\, to provide advice\, support and training for the Governors of its 800 or so member schools. He retired from that post in August 2016 and continues to undertake consultancy work for independent schools in Britain\, some commissioned separately and some on behalf of AGBIS. \nStuart has been a governor of twelve schools. He was recently Chair of Governors of a girls’ all through school and is currently a governor of an academy and of one other independent\, co-educational senior school.

Furthermore\, Thomas is a PhD candidate in Social Work and Social Care investigating the radicalisation of young men and the role of masculinity in violent extremism. \nThomas is a qualified Social Worker with a background in Children’s services and holds years of experience in multi-agency safeguarding work. His work spans across safeguarding children and adults from a range of harms\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, criminal exploitation\, county lines\, modern slavery and radicalisation. Thomas is passionate about supporting professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns\, and is using his PhD research to build a practical tool to support social workers to assess and safeguard males whom are vulnerable to radicalisation. \nIn his current role as Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT)\, Thomas provides regular trainings to staff and teams across the Trust\, including Prevent Awareness\, Workshop to Raise Awareness on Prevent (WRAP)\, and Safeguarding Adults. Thomas also offers regular expert consultations to support staff to respond to complex radicalisation concerns across the Trust\, and is the SPFT representative in the Prevent’s Channel Panels across Sussex that provide a multi-agency approach to safeguarding those assessed as vulnerable to radicalisation. Moreover\, Thomas contributes to the development and updating of Policy within SPFT to structurally respond to emerging safeguarding concerns regarding radicalisation. \nOver the years\, Thomas has gathered substantial knowledge and practical expertise on the multi-faceted dynamics of safeguarding and radicalisation. His unique position of both working in and researching on this issue provides unique insights into this complex area of safeguarding. Thomas is available to deliver Prevent training to a range of organisations\, which will cover the key features of Prevent Awareness and Prevent WRAP\, including CONTEST\, the statutory duty under Counter Terrorism Security Act 2015 known as the ‘Prevent Duty’\, Vulnerabilities to Radicalisation\, Extremist Ideology and groups\, Current Threat Level\, and the Channel Panel process. Using his personal and professional experiences\, he is now a resilience coach\, helping individuals and teams to achieve healthy high performance\, offering an understanding of the impact of resilient thoughts and resilient actions on overall levels of wellbeing. He is an accredited Workplace Resilience and Wellbeing Master Practitioner\, trained by the Wellbeing Project\, and has extensive experience as an educational consultant. \nIn 2020\, he founded Project 1000 Ltd\, a company that focuses on delivering coaching and consultancy. Andrew identified his key stress triggers and wanted to work for himself. He counted back 1000 days from his 55th birthday that happened to be World Mental Health Day and his future began! \nIn addition to his time as a Head\, he has also undertaken most roles within boarding\, including as a GAP student\, houseparent\, governor  and worked as Director of Training and then International Director for the BSA\, before becoming a BSA Senior Consultant. \nIn this webinar\, Andrew will not only share his personal experiences but he will offer some opportunities to find solutions that just might help to make the difference to those struggling to achieve that life / work balance that can be so difficult in a boarding environment. He is working with the BSA to provide that additional support to practitioners who might need it. He wishes he knew then what he knows now! \nStandard 11.4 of the National Minimum Standards for Boarding (September 5 2022) ensures that\, ‘The school identifies at least one person other than a parent\, outside the staff\, and those responsible for the leadership and governance of the school\, who children may contact directly about personal problems or concerns at the school. This person may be known as the ‘independent person’. Children know who this person is\, know how to contact them and feel comfortable talking to them. Having shared her struggles in her critically acclaimed memoir\, Seconds to Snap\, Tina has established herself as a leading voice on eating disorders\, mental health wellness and is a regular contributor across national media. Tina has appeared on Lorraine\, Channel 5\, ITV\, STV\, BBC as well as Jeremy Vine\, Radio 1 and other national and international media outlets. \nTina grew up in Dundee and spoke of her life being perfect – or so she thought. “I can tell you exactly the day it all went wrong – the day my mum attacked my dad with a kitchen knife. In those few\, short seconds\, a black hole opened up in my life and I fell right in.” Tina’s world turned upside down. Tina turned to the one thing she thought she could control – food and from this moment\, began the biggest fight of her life. \nTina openly shares her life-or-death struggle with anorexia and the darkest moments she experienced in her life whilst in and out of psychiatric wards. Tina enlightens her audience to inner struggles and silence that individuals face with any mental health disorder. \nTina now works to raise awareness and education through workshops\, talks and training across the world as far as Dubai and Abu Dhabi\, invited by the Prime Minister’s Office in the UK and across schools in the USA.
