DESCRIPTION:Date: June 07\, 2024\nTime: 10:30 – 15:30\nCost: BSA Full Member – £155\, BSA Affiliate Member – £230\, Non-member – £310\nAudience: School Secretaries\, Administrative Assistants and PA’s\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – Day Seminar\n\n\nCourse outline \nDespite working full time in a Boarding school\, many ‘office’ and administrative staff who support the students may have little contact with boarding compared to other staff in the school. This seminar will give an overview of effective boarding provision including the legal and regulatory aspects of caring for students. Additional topics will include managing staff and effective communication\, and listening skills in a busy\, school-based environment. \nOften\, administrative and support staff in a school are left to work in semi-isolation from students due to the nature of their roles and their working hours. This seminar will afford delegates the chance to develop a wider understanding of the issues faced by boarders and day students in their school. The seminar will also explore how great communication between all stakeholders in an organisation is a significant key to success for the organisation as a whole.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe boarding context\, including safeguarding and current issues - this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools\nUnderstanding the needs of the boarders – this session will focus on the emotional and physical needs of the boarders in your school\nWorking and communicating as a team - in this session the group will look at ways to effectively manage the various team members in a school\, from your own office/administrative team\, to the wider context of support\, pastoral\, medical and teaching staff\nManaging difficult situations – effective communication skills are key to positive relationships in a school. This session will explore some of the key points to managing relationships and dealing with conflict\, when it occurs.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn updated perspective of current boarding practice\, standards and provision\, including the latest safeguarding and inspection ‘headlines’ relevant to boarding\nAn increased understanding of the work undertaken in boarding to meet the needs of boarders\, and how the wider school plays its part\nTips for effective team management and best practice for working together as school\nTips for effective communication\, managing relationships and dealing with conflict.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

DESCRIPTION:Date: June 07\, 2024\nTime: 10:30 – 12:30\nCost: BSA Full Member – £110\, BSA Affiliate Member – £165\, Non-member – £220\nAudience:  Teaching Staff\, Houseparents\, EDI Leads\, SLT and PSHE Leads\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – Half-Day Seminar\n\n\nCourse outline: \nThis session focused on allyship in the classroom will focus on tackling racism and bias in education.  The importance of promoting racial literacy will be discussed along with understanding one’s own identity and how it relates to race. The session will reflect on examples of how biases and assumptions can contribute to racism\, with conversations on self-awareness encouraged. The role of allyship will be explored by defining allyship and its importance in promoting racial justice and discussing ways in which individuals can become allies in the fight against racism and bias.  Active listening\, learning from others’ experiences and perspectives as well as student voice will be discussed. The session will provide examples of how students can safely challenge racism and advocate for change\, with ways for adults to encourage safe and respectful dialogue among students. More resources for further education and understanding will be provided alongside examples of how best to continue allyship and advocacy for racial justice in education and society. \nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \n \nMichelle Mangal\, Independent Consultant \nMichelle Mangal is a consultant\, teacher\, and creative with over fifteen years of experience in the not-for-profit sector. Throughout her career\, she has worked with universities\, schools\, and community groups\, delivering educational programmes\, and facilitating workshops on a range of topics\, including Black history\, poetry\, and racial equity. Michelle has a deep understanding of the needs and challenges of black and minority ethnic communities\, and she is a powerful advocate for change through education and creative writing. Her poetry draws on her Caribbean heritage and love of music\, and she has performed her work at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Roundhouse. Most recently\, Michelle worked as a Racial Equity Advisor for the Youth Endowment Fund\, where she applied her expertise to help tackle racial disparities in funding youth justice projects. She is passionate about being an Ally and the healing power of the arts and nature.

He is a member of Meta’s Safety Advisory Council\, Internet Matters’ Expert Group and the Advisory Board of the Anti-bullying Alliance \n\nEd Venables\, Head\, Eagle House School \nAfter studying Classics at Oxford university and a 12-year career in the investment banking and private equity world in the City\, Ed returned to his old school\, Wellington College\, to teach Economics and Business.  His time at Wellington saw him being Head of the Economics department\, Housemaster of his former boarding house for six years and\, finally\, Director of Admissions and a member of the Executive Leadership Team.  In September 2023 Ed moved to become Head of Eagle House School\, Wellington’s 3-13 prep school.  Ed remains on the Wellington ELT. \nEd is married and has three sons.  Away from school\, he lives in Anglesey\, North Wales\, and loves getting there in the holidays for lots of walking\, running and time in and on the sea! \n\nJane Lunnon\, Head\, Alleyn’s School \nJane Lunnon became the first female Head of Alleyn’s School in January 2021 after six years as Head of Wimbledon High School and as Senior Deputy at Wellington School from 2010-2014 under Anthony Seldon’s headship. Her experience in senior leadership in both single-sex and co-educational environments\, including her time at Prior’s Field School\, spans a variety of roles: Head of English\, Assistant Director of Studies\, Head of Sixth Form\, Deputy Pastoral and Housemaster’s wife. \nJane is a trustee of the Royal Springboard Foundation\, chair and founder of the Coalition for Youth Mental Health in Schools\, a Trustee of the Dulwich Picture Gallery\, and sits on the Board of Governors for the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham\, Barrow Hills School and King Edward’s School\, Witley and as well as on the GSA / HMC Joint Universities Committee. \nHer first book\, “The State of Independence”\, co-written with Dr David James\, was first published by Routledge in 2019 and examines the challenges and opportunities for independent education. A second edition was published in February 2023.  She is now working on her second book: “Schools of Thought” due to be published in February 2024.  Jane was named Tatler Head of the Year in 2020. \nShe is married to Neill Lunnon who is also a Head (of Tower House School) and has two children. Her identical twin sister\, Jenny Brown\, is also Head of an independent London day school – which makes for many interesting conversations over dinner! \n\nTyler John\, Head of Diversity\, Equality and Inclusion\, St Paul’s School \nTyler John (he/they) is the Head of Diversity\, Equality and Inclusion at St Paul’s School in Barnes. Tyler started their career as an intern\, and has delivered strategic DEI work across a number of different sectors. They really value the role that education plays in facilitating diverse and inclusive spaces\, and enjoys working with open-minded and forward-thinking students in their role. \n  \n\nSarah Griffiths\, Deputy Head (Pastoral and Wellbeing)\, Caterham School \nNamed as an innovator and influencer in UK independent education\, Sarah has been developing and promoting wellbeing in education for over a decade. A big supporter of ‘the whole school approach’\, her work at Caterham School centres around proactive pastoral care\, underpinned by a strong wellbeing curriculum and complimented by a focus on staff wellbeing and engaging parents. Her current school has 1300 pupils aged from 3-18\, with a proportion of international boarders and she is also a governor at a local primary school.\nSarah is a Maths graduate who taught at Dulwich College for 11 years\, as well as being Head of Wellbeing\, before joining Caterham School in 2017 as Deputy Head (Pastoral and Wellbeing). She is a Maths teacher and a mum of three. \n\nBen Collingwood\, Partner\, Schools & Charities\, Moore Barlow \nBen specialises in advising independent schools and other charities on wide ranging areas of education law\, with particular focus on reputation issues\, pastoral\, safeguarding\, historic abuse allegations\, SEN\, exclusions\, parent/pupil complaints\, data protection\, parent contracts\, admissions and staff matters of all types. \nBen has written and spoken widely on issues facing the independent schools sector\, providing comment in The Times\, The Guardian\, The Lawyer and Law Society’s Gazette and at the national conferences and training programmes for the various associations that support independent schools including BSA\, ISBA\, HMC\, IAPS and AGBIS. \nBen lives with his wife and three children in West Sussex. He has been a devoted surfer since my childhood and loves to spend as much of his free time as possible in the sea and walking his pointers with his family. \n\n \nAdam McRae-Taylor\, Legal Director\, Schools & Charities\, Moore Barlow \nI specialise in employment and education law and advise on issues such as unfair dismissal\, discrimination cases\, safeguarding\, parent contracts and data protection issues including in relation to the GDPR. \nMy approach is to work with schools and charities to ensure that they are managing their staff fairly and lawfully\, as a happy workforce. This not only helps an organisation thrive and grow\, but also prevents managers from being distracted by disputes. If she isn’t cycling in the Surrey hills\, then she is open water swimming down on Branksome Beach. The State Sector could not employ him at that point as he was gay\, very much out of the closet\, and Section 28 still forbade the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality. Being a teacher well before sexual orientation became a protected characteristic in 2010\, he has forged a career of ‘firsts’ in the schools he has worked in. First out teacher. First out teacher in a boarding House. First teacher to get a civil partnership. First teacher to have adoption leave. First gay Houseparent. Going first can be a leap of faith for individuals and institutions and Ed will share some of the ways in which he has brought people along with him over the past two decades. \nEd is the Houseparent of a Senior Boy’s House at Fettes College in Edinburgh. He\, his husband\, and their two children live alongside 60 students\, not all of whom are boys. \n\nM Jolly\, Director of Wellbeing and Inclusion\, Charterhouse School \nM Jolly is the director of wellbeing and inclusion and senior leader at Charter House school. She is also a qualified therapist and clinical Supervisor. She has worked in schools with young people for over ten years and is creating real change within her school. M Jolly\, harnesses student voice to bring awareness to the school community and beyond about important issues. The EDI vision between 2021-2023 has placed emphasis on allyship and anti-discrimination\, culminating in pupil-led Charters for Anti-Racism\, Anti-Sexism\, LGBTQ+ and Anti-Bullying. He has been the Chairman of the State Boarding Schools’ Forum\, the Vice Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association and is currently it’s London Chair. He also sits on the Executive Committee of the BSA as the Inclusion and Diversity representative for the sector and is the co-founder of the ISC’s Inclusion and Diversity Group.  He regularly lectures at the Royal Institution of Great Britain\, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is also a Justice of the Peace. Over the years this has become more popular and an integral part of the college. It has shaped the culture of the college community and has also empowered young people to be part of the changes that promote inclusivity and diversity. Aiyaz is passionately dedicated to his role and works collaboratively with the PSHE lead\, HR\, HoDs and SMT to drive the changes that they feel will make the college more diverse and inclusive. Prior to this\, Aiyaz taught science at inner London secondary schools for ten years. \n  \n\nEquity\, Diversity and Inclusion: Safeguarding and Inspection \nThis session will look at safeguarding with an equity\, diversity and inclusion lens and will consider key inspection requirements. \n \nSpeaker:  Dale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA and BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Dale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit\, which was updated in 2022. \n  \n\nSupportive Conversations \nThis session will explore the need for a Coaching Mindset when having supportive and robust conversations about sensitive and important topics. We will explore what coaching is and is not\, as well as learn skills you can immediately use with students and staff. \n\nIdentity\, Belonging and Connectedness \nThis session will explore the notions of identity\, belonging and connectedness. Coco will share her own stories of identity and belonging as well as her experiences of working with young people in schools. How do our different and often intersecting identities shape our capacity to belong and connect and how can schools provide an environment where connectedness thrives? \n \nSpeaker: Ammy Davis Potter \nAmmy is an educational consultant and inclusive education specialist. She worked in boarding schools for 30 years in a number of different roles including Head of Department\, Houseparent\, Head of Boarding and Deputy Head (Pastoral).  She then worked for the BSA Group as Director of Guardianship and Inclusion before setting up Ammy Davies Education in 2023 providing consultancy for schools\, other businesses and private families. \n  \nSpeaker: Mutisunge Edwards\, Christ’s Hospital \nMutisunge Edwards is the first ever full-time equity\, diversity and inclusion lead at Christ’s Hospital School. DESCRIPTION:Date: May 8\, 2024 \nTime: 14:00 – 15:00\nCost: Sacpa Full Member – £65\, Sacpa Additional Member – £30\, Non-member Rate – £130\nAudience: Staff and volunteers in direct contact and indirect contact with children\, young people and their families\, trustees\, governors and management committee members wanting to enhance their awareness\, knowledge and understanding of this specific area of safeguarding.\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – webinar\n\n\nCourse outline: \nA significant focus on inspectorate judgement of pupil wellbeing is the way in which organisations prevent\, identify and respond to child-on-child abuse.  Inspectorate judgements refer to evidence of specific child-on-child training for everyone in direct and indirect contact with children and young people. \nWhilst there is a particular focus currently from education regulators\, an awareness of child-on-child abuse\, the safeguarding systems managing the phenomena is a key safeguarding practice consideration for charities\, voluntary and private sector organisations in discharging their safeguarding duties and promoting welfare. \nThis briefing will cover key knowledge and awareness topics within the child-on-child abuse strand of safeguarding including recent updates from KCSIE 2022 for those delegates to which it applies.  It includes a case study example that is used to review and apply learning content. \nUnable to attend? Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis.
