Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the day to day lives of all within the boarding house\, and community.  \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. The training content covered will apply to Houseparents of large teams\, Heads of Boarding as well as Deputy Head\, Pastoral\, depending on the size and make up of the school.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nLeadership styles – this session will consider the demands of leadership and the recognised different styles of leadership \nBuilding an effective team – communication\, planning\, building a shared vision and appreciating the skills and attributes of team members \nEffective leadership – deployment of resources\, time management\, focusing on outcomes for students \nSuccessful leadership – this final session will consider how to put everything into practice\, discuss self-reflection and review. \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nPromote a better understanding of different leadership styles \nBe aware of how to build a successful team \nDevelop skills as a reflective practitioner. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

DESCRIPTION:Date: September 27\, 2024\nTime: 10:30 – 15:30\nCost: BSA Full Member – £175\, BSA Affiliate Member – £250\, Non-member – £350\nAudience: Head/Principal\, Deputy Head/Vice-Principal\, Governors\, Head of Boarding\, Boarding staff\, DSL\nPlatform: Zoom (online)\n\n\nCourse outline: \nSchools have become familiar with the requirements of the regular inspection process. This virtual day seminar is aimed both at those who are familiar with the process as well as those completely new to it. The day focuses both on the process itself and preparation for forthcoming inspection visits\, as well as providing relevant updates on new legislation that could impact an inspection result.  \nThroughout the session\, information and actions will refer to the new National Minimum Standards 2022\, as well as referencing appropriate updates to other guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024. The session will also consider how well schools have embedded their responses to Everyone’s Invited and the Ofsted Review\, which remain a key focus for inspectors. Emerging issues from the new ISI Framework will also be explored.  \nThis training is relevant and valuable regardless of where schools are in the inspection cycle.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nUpdates to current guidance – including KCSIE 2024 and the National Minimum Standards \nPreparing for inspection – gathering evidence relating to the inspection framework \nGoing beyond the minimum standard – securing the best outcomes for pupils\, actions that go beyond the minimum standards \nEmbedding a regular audit procedure – looking at the process of review and reflection and establishing a long-term process beyond the inspection cycle. \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nRecommendations of how to prepare for an inspection \nIncreased understanding of relevant legislative and guidance updates \nRecommendations for conducting a regular audit procedure. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \n \nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nSue Duff \nFollowing a successful career in commerce\, culminating in a senior position in a world leading market research organisation\, Sue made the transition to teaching in the independent sector.  Having worked in prep\, GSA and HMC environments\, she has a breadth of experience across the independent schools sector. Sue has always focussed on boarding in her teaching career having set up two houses from scratch as well as running boarding teams. Before the leap to self employment\, she was on the Senior Leadership Team at one of the country’s premier HMC boarding schools\, having led the integration of the school into a fully co-educational environment and held various management positions.  Sue now works with schools\, both in the UK and worldwide\, as an inspector and consultant predominantly looking at boarding\, pastoral and academic systems\, helping to improve the outcomes that pupils experience.  She also works on whole school compliance projects.  Sue has worked with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) since 2011 and is a Lead/Reporting Inspector\, also inspecting for AEGIS and COBIS. She has been working with the BSA undertaking consultancy and training for almost 20 years. Sue is vice-chair of Governors at a large HMC co-ed school in Worcestershire.

For further details on BAISIS\, please click here\, or feel free to arrange a call with our Director\, Bethan Hudson\, by emailing us at baisis@boarding.org.uk. \n\nSpeaker: \nHazel Lim\, Founder and Director of Chinese Autism Community Interest Company est. 2022 \nMultiple autism award winner Hazel Lim is a prominent advocate in the fight against the cultural stigma associated with autism within the UK Chinese community.  After moving with her neurodivergent family to Swansea in 2015 to complete a master’s degree in Autism and Related Conditions\, she decided to make Wales her permanent home.  Since then\, she has increasingly become a leading figure in the local autism and Chinese communities there\, bringing together the voices and experiences of many to create a more inclusive and compassionate environment. \nHazel founded the Chinese Autism Support Group in 2016 to provide much needed support to Chinese families\, working tirelessly to raise awareness and understanding of autism particularly for those in caring roles.  Then in 2019\, Hazel went on to produce the first English and Chinese Bilingual Autism booklet in the UK\, providing professionals with an introductory understanding of the cultural barriers faced by people living with autism in the Chinese community.  This document has been greatly utilised and appreciated by many professional bodies in South Wales\, as well as internationally.  Hazel’s work on both this invaluable resource and the support group she founded was recognised by the Prime Minister in 2021\, who awarded her with a prestigious ‘Point of Light’ award. \nFrom winning additional awards such as ‘UK Chinese Women of the Year’ in the volunteering category\, The National Autistic Society’s ‘Someone Who Changed My Life’ Award\, and both Womenspire’s ‘Community Champion Award’ and Womenspire ‘Champion of Champions Award’\, it is more than evident that Hazel’s impact and dedication is now widely recognised\, especially her unwavering warmth and impressive commitment to her cause. \nHazel’s work has often been greatly challenged by cultural barriers\, the unwillingness to embrace differences\, and the lack of funding available to meet the needs of such vulnerable people. Despite this\, Hazel’s genuine desire to help others and her determination to ensure no child or family affected by autism suffers in silence has made a significant impact on the local autism community\, and those trying to understand autism in the Chinese cultural context both in Wales and all over the world. \nTo further support minority families affected by autism\, Hazel founded Chinese Autism CIC in 2022\, a project which is dedicated to empowering all Chinese families in need across the UK.  CACIC endeavours to counter the misinformed perspectives and cultural stigma that uniquely exists within the Chinese community through providing guidance\, information\, education\, and awareness campaigns\, strongly focusing on leading by example to remove barriers\, address prejudice\, and foster inclusion and equality.

Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

The sooner your new Graduate and GAP assistants have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise.  \n This seminar will compliment a school-based induction and enable your new Graduate and GAP assistants to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to make the best possible start to their role in boarding in your school.  \n This seminar will cover relevant aspects of the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and ways in which delegates can meet the emotional needs of the boarders in their care. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to boarding. The sooner staff new to boarding have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise.  \n This seminar will cover the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and meeting boarders’ needs. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.
