This may include the young person’s own safety and wellbeing\, along with that of the others in a boarding house. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

After a decade leading Uppingham and 32 years overall in teaching\, he embarked on a third career as Chief Executive of AGBIS. Richard is much enjoying the challenges at AGBIS\, having been Chairman of the Boarding Schools’ Association for 2011-12 and Chairman of HMC for 2014-15.

Having resided in state\, preparatory and senior school boarding houses since 2014 with her Housemaster husband\, Kate has a unique perspective of boarding life. \n \nClaire Dan\, Director of Safeguarding and Director\, Sacpa \nClaire is Director of Safeguarding and Director\, Sacpa and leads on the provision of safeguarding advice and support to members and the development and delivery of CPD and safeguarding consultancy services. Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis.

What is often neglected is the impact of allergies on mental health. This session will provide a brief overview of safe allergy management in education settings and share with delegates information on how living with an allergy\, allergies and indeed chronic illness\, can negatively impact mental health\, and how to offer some support. \n\nSpeaker: Sarah Knight\, Founder and CEO\, The Allergy Team\n\n16:00 \nConference close \n\nSpeakers: \nLisa Thomson\, Charlie Waller Trust \nLisa has had a long career in a variety of Mental Health settings within the NHS. She originally trained as a Mental Health Nurse in 1990 and subsequently worked in inpatient and community settings with adults\, children\, young people and their families. She completed a Masters in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and a post graduate diploma in Evidence Based Practice leading to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England. \n\nSkyler Moulder\, Lead Nurse\, The Leys School and Senior Nurse Advisor\, HIEDA \nSkyler did her Adult Nursing BSc at Kings College London in 2011 and went straight into community nursing. After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). This is where she is now and where her passion for independent school nursing started. \n\nSarah Knight\, Founder and CEO\, The Allergy Team \nSarah Knight is Founder and CEO of The Allergy Team\, an organisation which supports schools\, food businesses and families to manage food allergies. The company runs a programme for schools including training and consultancy to transform safety and inclusion. Before setting up The Allergy Team\, Sarah was a senior TV executive working on prime-time BBC shows including Your Home Made Perfect and the flagship consumer show\, Watchdog. Sarah has two children\, both with food allergies. \n\nVicki Cockman\, Director of Training and Consultancy\, MHFA England  \nVicki Cockman is the Director of Training and Consultancy at MHFA England\, with 15 years experience as a senior leader in both corporate and non-profit sectors. \nPassionate about fostering inclusive and supportive cultures\, Vicki works with organisations of all sectors and sizes to embed long-term solutions that prioritise employee wellbeing and sustainable success. With unrivalled expertise in workplace mental health\, she supports businesses to identify and address their employees’ mental health needs\, driving meaningful change. \n\nRuth-Ann Radlett\, Whole School Mental Health Lead & Deputy DSL\, Culford School \nRuth-Ann started teaching in 2008 through the Teach First programme\, spending five years in Moss Side\, Manchester\, where she taught English and was Head of Year 10/11 whilst completing an Educational Postgradute Diploma in Educational Leadership. She then moved to Kathmandu with her husband to teach internationally\, spending her second year on the Senior Leadership Team\, before moving back to the UK where she spent some time in Birmingham as DDSL and Head of Key Stage Three. Ruth-Ann joined Culford in September 2016 as an English Teacher\, and during her time at Culford she has been a Deputy Housemistress\, Head of English\, and is currently Whole School Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead and DDSL. In September she will begin as Assistant Head Safeguarding and Wellbeing. Ruth decompresses by riding her share horse\, Harry\, and walking Grunge the dog\, who she adopted from Kathmandu! \n\nKieran Jones\, Director of Boarding\, Oxford International College \nKieran Jones is the Director of Boarding at Oxford International College. With extensive experience across leading UK boarding schools\, Kieran brings a deep understanding of modern boarding practices. He is passionate about creating a nurturing\, inclusive\, and supportive environment that truly feels like a home away from home\, particularly for international students. \n  \n\n \nBen Stork\, Strength & Conditioning coach\, ACS International School Cobham \nBen has over 30 years experience as a fitness instructor\, working mainly with young athletes. He was fitness coach at Millwall FC for 7 years and warmed them up for the FA Cup final in 2004 against Manchester United. He has worked with students from dozens of schools\, and is currently the Strength & Conditioning coach at ACS International School Cobham. \nBen’s interest in teenage wellbeing began with his own daughter’s struggles\, which saw her spend 4 months as an in-patient with CAMHS. It led Ben to research extensively and engage with experts\, in order to be the best support he could be for her. \nWith a background based around injury prevention\, Ben took the same approach with mental health. The BEN programme gives teenagers the knowledge and power to manage themselves\, recognising the inextricable link between our metabolic health and our mental wellbeing.

DESCRIPTION:The Closing date for September 2025 applications is 30 July 2025\n\nCourse outline\nThe MA in Residential Education is a one-year\, part-time course for those working in or with an interest in boarding schools.  It is offered in partnership with the Boarding Schools’ Association. This course allows those with experience in boarding\, who are keen to research\, to write about a topic of interest to them.  The heart of the MA is a 12\,000-15\,000 word dissertation.  You will do a literature review\, which informs your dissertation\, and you will learn about different research methods.  You will be expected to read widely. He was part of an expert steering group with TikTok looking at harmful and dangerous online challenges and regularly contributes to content for Internet Matters\, recently delivering their online safety training for those working with children in care commissioned by Ofcom. \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. \nAs an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents\, teachers and governors to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 19 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines and awareness centres across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is now Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has also worked with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and chaired the working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance.

He holds extensive experience tackling a wide range of complex radicalisation cases in various roles\, including as a Social Worker within Children’s Services\, as Channel Coordinator within Prevent and as the Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within an NHS mental health Trust. Furthermore\, Thomas is a PhD candidate in Social Work and Social Care investigating the radicalisation of young men and the role of masculinity in violent extremism. \nThomas is a qualified Social Worker with a background in Children’s services and holds years of experience in multi-agency safeguarding work. His work spans across safeguarding children and adults from a range of harms\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, criminal exploitation\, county lines\, modern slavery and radicalisation. Thomas is passionate about supporting professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns\, and is using his PhD research to build a practical tool to support social workers to assess and safeguard males whom are vulnerable to radicalisation. \nIn his current role as Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT)\, Thomas provides regular trainings to staff and teams across the Trust\, including Prevent Awareness\, Workshop to Raise Awareness on Prevent (WRAP)\, and Safeguarding Adults. Thomas also offers regular expert consultations to support staff to respond to complex radicalisation concerns across the Trust\, and is the SPFT representative in the Prevent’s Channel Panels across Sussex that provide a multi-agency approach to safeguarding those assessed as vulnerable to radicalisation. Moreover\, Thomas contributes to the development and updating of Policy within SPFT to structurally respond to emerging safeguarding concerns regarding radicalisation. \nOver the years\, Thomas has gathered substantial knowledge and practical expertise on the multi-faceted dynamics of safeguarding and radicalisation. His unique position of both working in and researching on this issue provides unique insights into this complex area of safeguarding. Thomas is available to deliver Prevent training to a range of organisations\, which will cover the key features of Prevent Awareness and Prevent WRAP\, including CONTEST\, the statutory duty under Counter Terrorism Security Act 2015 known as the ‘Prevent Duty’\, Vulnerabilities to Radicalisation\, Extremist Ideology and groups\, Current Threat Level\, and the Channel Panel process. Sue has always focussed on boarding in her teaching career having set up two houses from scratch as well as running boarding teams. Before the leap to self employment\, she was on the Senior Leadership Team at one of the country’s premier HMC boarding schools\, having led the integration of the school into a fully co-educational environment and held various management positions.  Sue now works with schools\, both in the UK and worldwide\, as an inspector and consultant predominantly looking at boarding\, pastoral and academic systems\, helping to improve the outcomes that pupils experience.  She also works on whole school compliance projects.  Sue has worked with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) since 2011 and is a Lead/Reporting Inspector\, also inspecting for AEGIS and COBIS. Gavin was previously Headmaster of Worksop College in Nottinghamshire since 2012\, where he delivered academic turnaround aligned with a substantial building programme and whole school restructure.\nPrior to Worksop College\, Gavin’s earlier career included working internationally in schools in Sri Lanka and Argentina\, before returning to the UK in 2009 as Deputy Head of The Glasgow Academy\, an independent co-educational school with 1300 pupils.
