In 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter\, and has developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

Eating disorders are a complex mental illness with a high mortality rate\, not only down to the eating disorder and malnutrition\, but also suicide. For staff working with young people\, having the confidence to offer support\, and open up conversations about eating disorders can be nerve-wracking. \nOur expert speaker\, Tina McGuff\, will address the need to raise awareness and have a proactive approach to supporting mental health concerns before the need for clinical intervention is reached. Tina will share her own story and invites delegates to ask questions. Having shared her struggles in her critically acclaimed memoir\, Seconds to Snap\, Tina has established herself as a leading voice on eating disorders\, mental health wellness and is a regular contributor across national media. Tina has appeared on Lorraine\, Channel 5\, ITV\, STV\, BBC as well as Jeremy Vine\, Radio 1 and other national and international media outlets. \nTina grew up in Dundee and spoke of her life being perfect – or so she thought. “I can tell you exactly the day it all went wrong – the day my mum attacked my dad with a kitchen knife. In those few\, short seconds\, a black hole opened up in my life and I fell right in.” Tina’s world turned upside down. Tina turned to the one thing she thought she could control – food and from this moment\, began the biggest fight of her life. \nTina openly shares her life-or-death struggle with anorexia and the darkest moments she experienced in her life whilst in and out of psychiatric wards. Tina enlightens her audience to inner struggles and silence that individuals face with any mental health disorder. \nTina now works to raise awareness and education through workshops\, talks and training across the world as far as Dubai and Abu Dhabi\, invited by the Prime Minister’s Office in the UK and across schools in the USA. A bystander is someone who witnesses bullying but does not get involved. Being a bystander is easy – they aren’t the perpetrator and they are not the one outwardly being harmed or the target of the attack. \nIn every situation it’s necessary to have somebody who does something that prevents or reduces the bullying they see – an upstander. Upstanders are people who comes to the aid of another person who is being bullied and shows them kindness. \nMoving from being a bystander to becoming an upstander will not happen overnight. So she trains violent prisoners to be DRM Facilitators\, challenging teenagers to be peer mediators and troubled neighbours to be tenant listeners.\nThe DRM empowers participants to be heard in ways which are more likely to be valued. The DRM has applications in families\, schools\, healthcare\, prisons\, workplaces\, neighbourhoods and organisations. It is used for resolving conflict\, repairing harm\, decision making and healing at an individual and group level. It challenges people to live in harmony with their values.\nThe Dialogue Road Map also works at when applied to leadership and governance. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

She joined United Learning in 1995 when it was the Church Schools Company. She was Head of Guildford High School from 2002 – 2022 and is currently Executive Head there. Guildford High became a Teaching School in 2013 and Fiona was appointed an NLE\, leading the United Learning Teaching School Alliance from 2013 – 2020. She has a variety of governance roles; she is an Associate Director of Cumbria University\, on the governing body of Epsom College and St Ives Prep School and a member of the ‘Learning Partners Academy Trust’. Aileen leads operations at BSA providing guidance and training and works closely with government departments\, local authorities and other agencies to support members. Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n\n \nDale Wilkins FTIOB\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance\, BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA in 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998.
