DESCRIPTION:Date: September 27\, 2024\nTime: 10:30 – 15:30\nCost: BSA Full Member – £175\, BSA Affiliate Member – £250\, Non-member – £350\nAudience: Head/Principal\, Deputy Head/Vice-Principal\, Governors\, Head of Boarding\, Boarding staff\, DSL\nPlatform: Zoom (online)\n\n\nCourse outline: \nSchools have become familiar with the requirements of the regular inspection process. This virtual day seminar is aimed both at those who are familiar with the process as well as those completely new to it. The day focuses both on the process itself and preparation for forthcoming inspection visits\, as well as providing relevant updates on new legislation that could impact an inspection result.  \nThroughout the session\, information and actions will refer to the new National Minimum Standards 2022\, as well as referencing appropriate updates to other guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024. The session will also consider how well schools have embedded their responses to Everyone’s Invited and the Ofsted Review\, which remain a key focus for inspectors. Emerging issues from the new ISI Framework will also be explored.  \nThis training is relevant and valuable regardless of where schools are in the inspection cycle.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nUpdates to current guidance – including KCSIE 2024 and the National Minimum Standards \nPreparing for inspection – gathering evidence relating to the inspection framework \nGoing beyond the minimum standard – securing the best outcomes for pupils\, actions that go beyond the minimum standards \nEmbedding a regular audit procedure – looking at the process of review and reflection and establishing a long-term process beyond the inspection cycle. \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nRecommendations of how to prepare for an inspection \nIncreased understanding of relevant legislative and guidance updates \nRecommendations for conducting a regular audit procedure. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \n \nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nSue Duff \nFollowing a successful career in commerce\, culminating in a senior position in a world leading market research organisation\, Sue made the transition to teaching in the independent sector.  Having worked in prep\, GSA and HMC environments\, she has a breadth of experience across the independent schools sector. Sue has always focussed on boarding in her teaching career having set up two houses from scratch as well as running boarding teams. Before the leap to self employment\, she was on the Senior Leadership Team at one of the country’s premier HMC boarding schools\, having led the integration of the school into a fully co-educational environment and held various management positions.  Sue now works with schools\, both in the UK and worldwide\, as an inspector and consultant predominantly looking at boarding\, pastoral and academic systems\, helping to improve the outcomes that pupils experience.  She also works on whole school compliance projects.  Sue has worked with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) since 2011 and is a Lead/Reporting Inspector\, also inspecting for AEGIS and COBIS. She has been working with the BSA undertaking consultancy and training for almost 20 years. Sue is vice-chair of Governors at a large HMC co-ed school in Worcestershire.

Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the day to day lives of all within the boarding house\, and community.  \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

The last 14 years of his police service was in the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU). Philip is a qualified AIM3 Assessor of children displaying HSB. Philip also quality assured the Home Office Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Service (HSBSS) where he oversaw and triaged all the requests for support and advised personally on all the complex cases. He is also qualified as the following: \n\nFamily Liaison Officer (FLO)\nDisaster Victim Identification Officer (DVI)\nSignificant Witness interviewer (Sig Wit)\nEnhanced Cognitive Witness Interviewer\nDomestic Abuse Officer\nPIP Level 2 investigator\nAchieving Best Evidence (ABE- VRI vulnerable and intimidated witness interviewer)\nSpecialist Child Abuse Investigative Development Programme (SCAIDP)\nJoint Investigator – Section 47 Children Act ‘89\n\nPhilip was also seconded to the Training Department for 2 years\, where he received qualifications in training and delivered all these subjects\, including Harmful Sexual Behaviours (HSB). Philip supports survivors and families who have been victim of all types of abuse\, including technology assisted child sexual abuse (TACSA) through his work as a consultant for the Marie Collins Foundation.

In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. For 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. She is a registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council. Before commencing her training\, Jody worked as a teacher\, learning support assistant and tutor with young people from 5-19. The focus of much of her work looked at anxiety and mental health issues in school settings. Her doctoral research explored the experiences\, perceptions and training needs of secondary school staff working with self-harm.

Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

SUMMARY:BSA Certificate in Boarding Practice – Pastoral Care
DESCRIPTION:The BSA’s Programme of Professional Development and Training is the most comprehensive CPD package offered to staff in boarding schools\, and includes a series of professional practice Certificate courses specifically designed to meet the practical needs of boarding staff and provide an internationally recognised qualification in Boarding Education. \nThis is a two year modular course is aimed specifically at staff working in and around boarding. Over the last 20 years  approx. 3000 House tutors\, Matrons\, Support Staff\, School Nurses\, Assistants\, House Parents and HsMs have completed this Award. \nThis course is aimed at graduates and non graduates\,  the key difference lies in the end of module assignment. The Course is arranged in two parts as follows: \n\nPart 1: BSA Certificate in Boarding Practice – Pastoral Care\n\nand one of these: \n\nPart 2: BSA Advanced Certificate in Boarding Practice Boarding Management\nPart 2: BSA Advanced Certificate in Boarding Practice for School Nurses\nPart 2: BSA Certificate in Boarding Practice – Pupil Welfare and Support\nPart 2: BSA Advanced Certificate in Boarding Practice – Supporting International Students\n\nWhat does this course cover? \nThis course is taken by both graduate teaching and non-graduate house staff\, including matrons\, assistant house staff and house parents\, with responsibility for the care and welfare of boarding pupils.
