Following her time in Switzerland\, she was a Pastoral Manager for an inner-city state academy before working in the charity sector for Debrett’s running the ‘Debrett’s Foundation’ training programme. In her role\, Bethan plans and manages all Day Seminars\, Conferences\, INSET and Consultancy\, as well as being Director of BAISIS. She believes boarding can be a positive force for young people and in order to fully support their needs staff can never learn too much. This virtual day seminar is aimed both at those who are familiar with the process and those completely new to it. The day focuses on the process itself\, preparation for forthcoming inspection visits\, and relevant updates on new legislation that could impact an inspection result. \nThroughout the session\, information and actions will refer to the National Minimum Standards 2022\, as well as referencing appropriate updates to other guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024. \nThere will be specific breakout sessions during the day to focus on ISI or Ofsted as appropriate. The three intensive study days involve a mixture of short lectures\, presentations and discussions led by students\, together with group problem solving exercises and case studies. Group discussion is a particularly important aspect of this course\, enabling you to look at the theory in the light of your own practical experience. You will be encouraged to contribute ideas\, opinions and questions\, take responsibility for your own learning and\, by sharing\, to contribute to the learning of the group as a whole. \nBetween sessions you will be expected to do some reading\, thinking and discussing with colleagues in your school and with your mentor. Before each study day\, you will be expected to spend some time on the preparatory tasks in the course booklet and using the course sessions reflect on your own boarding school situation. The follow up tasks will help you to focus on practical ways of applying ideas and theories in the boarding setting. \nYou will also be required to keep a professional file during the course containing brief notes\, ideas\, action points\, and activities and issues to take back to the workplace. The course booklet will give you a number of relevant tasks to think about\, providing opportunities to record your thoughts. This file is itself not directly assessed but will provide essential material to draw upon when you write up your chosen assessment topic. \nThe Course Assignment is a written project of ~2500 words on a topic directly related to the pastoral care/management of international students. The topic will benefit both the student and their school in developing their understanding of best practice in relation to supporting international students. Guidance on selecting a suitable topic\, and on how to write up and submit the assignment will be provided in the course booklet and by the tutors on the course. \nMain course sessions include: \nThe Pastoral Care & Boarding Wellbeing of International Students \nDeveloping strategies and practice \nIntegration and the whole school approach \nNOTE: Students will need attend all study days and successfully complete the assignment in order to gain the course certificate. \nWhat support will I receive during the course? \nYou will receive support throughout the course from the BSA\, the course tutor and from your school mentor. \nCourse tutors \nYour BSA course tutor will be a senior member of staff with considerable experience in boarding education. He or she will: \n● provide personal and professional help and encouragement; \n● work with you in discussion groups and tutorial sessions during the course; \n● liaise with your school mentor; \n● review and provide feedback on your proposed assessment task; \n● advise and support you with your assignment and review progress regularly; \n● mark your assignment. \nCourse Tutors are:  \nElyse Conlon\nInternational Director at Moreton Hall School \nElyse Conlon is International Director at Moreton Hall School\, Shropshire and has worked at Moreton for 13 years in roles such as Teacher of GCSE English\,  Head of EAL\, and Director of Studies for their renowned International Study Centre and Summer School programme. \nElyse was previously involved in admissions in a high-performing overseas school\, was Deputy Chair of BAISIS (British Association for Independent Schools with International Students) for three years\, and is also delighted to continue her training role with the Boarding Schools Association designing and delivering accredited courses to school staff in independent schools both overseas and in the UK. \nElyse has always been inspired by meaningful and practical international CPD with post graduate degrees in international education \, applied linguistics and human resource management. She has been delivering and designing teacher training programmes for 20 years. \nJames Kidd\nSenior Vice Principal & DSL \nJames is currently the Senior Vice Principal and DSL at DLD College London\, having joined in September 2020\, initially to look after the boarding aspect of the school – where over 50 nationalities live on site. He is responsible for the pastoral life of the school\, looking after boarding\, the house system\, wellbeing and health care and the co-curricular life of the school. Prior to joining DLD College\, James spent 14 years at St John’s School\, Leatherhead\, where he was Assistant Head (Boarding and Co-Curricular)\, having been both a Head of Department and Housemaster of the largest boys’ boarding house in the school before this. Outside of this\, he is Chair of Governors at a special school in the state sector\, and a team manager for the Surrey Schools’ Athletics Team. James has enrolled to study an EdD form January 2023. \nThomas Hadcroft \nHeadteacher \nTom Hadcroft joined Berkhamsted Boys School in January 2022 as Headteacher from DLD College London\, where he was Senior Deputy Head\, overseeing on the Pastoral and Boarding sides of the school for five years. During this time DLD College London were recognised with six national awards\, including Boarding School of the Year and innovation awards in Mental Health\, Wellbeing and Student voice. Previously\, he had school leadership roles at Collège Alpin Beau Soleil in Switzerland and St John’s School Leatherhead. Before his teaching career he worked in the finance sector and has recently completed a Masters in Educational Leadership\, with a focus on coaching in education. \nTom is a Council of International School Accreditation Team member and has a keen interest in international education and international boarding. He has recruited in China\, Croatia\, Thailand and Kazakhstan and has been a BSA Tutor on the Advanced Certificate course since 2017. \nSchool Mentors \nAll participants on the course should have the support of a mentor\, appointed and approved by the Head. An effective partnership between you and your mentor will have significant benefits in terms of challenge and stimulation for you both and also offers an opportunity for fresh insight into boarding issues for the school. \nThe role is best undertaken by a colleague who really knows and understands your work and has an experienced overview of boarding. The course content was not only strategically insightful but also effective in developing my understanding of the subject matter. \nThe course’s structure and coverage of key themes\, such as the strategic nature and importance of the international boarding market\, the motivations behind international students seeking a British education\, and the nuanced exploration of cultural identity\, cultural values\, and cultural differences\, were all rich\, engaging\, and detailed. After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). This is where she is now and where her passion for independent school nursing started.

Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis. \nDavid Walker\, Director\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB  \nDavid is the BSA Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Here\, she specialises in culturally mapping the environment and student wellbeing to make a cohesive\, impactful education for all the students and wider community. \nAside from her role as Assistant Principal\, Lauren is a Mental Health First Aid Instructor and teaches Business and Economics. Away from academic commitments\, Lauren is a keen advocate of DLD’s ‘Crypto-Club’\, using her previous business experience to encourage young entrepreneurs for the future. \nAway from DLD\, Lauren separates her time between writing and health hacking. She currently writes for several local businesses\, producing copy for technology\, candles or reflexology firms. If she isn’t cycling in the Surrey hills\, then she is open water swimming down on Branksome Beach. A self-confessed health addict\, at the weekends Lauren can be found on the golf course\, tennis court\, enjoying cryotherapy\, or scouting the latest health technology gadget. She is also a Governor for Greenfield School\, Woking and has worked with several hockey clubs in the local area to produce some of our current national players. \nGareth Evans \nGareth joined DLD College London in August 2016 as Director of Studies before being promoted to Assistant Principal (Upper School) and latterly Vice Principal (Pastoral). He joined us from Strode’s College where he was Head of the Creative Arts Faculty since 2009. \nAside from his role as Assistant Principal\, Gareth currently teaches Film. He has also taught Media A Level and Film Studies GCSE. Gareth is an examiner and moderator for EDUQAS. Beyond these academic commitments\, Gareth is involved in several CCA’s at DLD College including Community Projects\, Run Club and the Film Society. \nIn his free time Gareth is an avid ‘very’ amateur surfer and enjoys spending time on the beach. Gareth is a keen member of the community where he lives and was elected as District Councillor for Loxwood Ward (Chichester) in May 2019 and again in May 2023. He is also an award-winning community volunteer and was awarded a Community Builder Award by the Mayor of Newham which recognised his contribution to the local community he once lived in and continues to support. He has been involved in setting up a history society\, running an oral history project in collaboration with ‘Discovering Stratford Village’\, organising inter-generational disco parties\, running children’s events at the local library and has been a co-presenter of East End Mystery Show on East London Radio. \nGareth recently completed his MEd in Senior Leadership and Management at Buckingham University but also holds a PGCE from Oxford Brooks\, a MA in Human Resource Management from London Metropolitan University and a BA Hons (2:1) in Media and Communication Studies.

DESCRIPTION:Date: February 06\, 2025\nTime: 09:30 – 11:30\nCost: BSA Full Member – £135\, BSA Affiliate Member – £170 \, Non-member – £270\nAudience: Head\, SLT\, Inclusion Lead\, Head of Boarding\, Teaching and Boarding staff\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – Half-Day Seminar\n\n\nCourse outline: \nThe aim of this half day seminar is to provide an opportunity to learn more about the importance of the management system of the brain – known as executive functioning skills and to consider strategies that can be used to support pupils.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe three main areas of working memory\, cognitive flexibility (flexible thinking) and inhibitory control (including self-control) will be unpacked. When people struggle with executive function\, it impacts them at home\, in school\, and in life because the skills involved support goal setting\, planning\, and completing tasks. \nExecutive function is responsible for many skills including: paying attention; organizing\, planning\, and prioritising; starting tasks and staying focused on them to completion; understanding different points of view; regulating emotions and self-monitoring. Executive functioning skills usually develop quickly in early childhood and into the teen years but are still developing into the mid-20s. Some people struggle with EF\, and this can cause challenges during childhood\, as a teenager and young adult. \nWe will hear from an EF expert about what executive function skills are and how they impact our lives. We will also hear directly from school staff about adjustments and proactive work that has made a positive impact in their settings. \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAttending this half day seminar will help delegates increase their knowledge and understanding of the importance of supporting executive functioning for all pupils\, but particularly for those who have weaker EF function. After graduating with a Psychology degree\, she started her career as a primary teacher before completing post-graduate training to qualify as an Educational Psychologist. Katharine spent 15 years working for a large local authority Psychology Service before becoming Head of Learning Support at Caterham Prep School. Her Doctoral research at UCL examined the impact of mindset on the literacy attainments of Key Stage 3 pupils. Katharine maintains a private psychology practice alongside her teaching role. She is the IAPS SEND Subject Advisor and sits on the ISC Cross-Association SEND Advisory Group.

Students will be encouraged to contribute ideas\, opinions and questions\, taking responsibility for their own learning\, whilst contributing to the learning of the group as a whole. \nThe course is run by senior members of the SACPA staff.  Each delegate will have an experienced SACPA Tutor who attends the study days. \nCourse Assessment \nDelegates may choose assessment via portfolio or assignment. \nMaria Putz : Interim Head of Training (Sexual Violence and Safeguarding) \nMaria joined LimeCulture in January 2019 as one of the Training Managers. Maria has been involved in the development and delivery of Preventing Sexual Misconduct Education (PSME) and the Sexual Misconduct Liaison Officer (SMLO) Model helping schools and colleges to create a whole school approach in their prevention and response to sexual misconduct.  Maria has also presented nationally and internationally with a focus on healthy relationships and safeguarding in sport. Maria is committed to improving services for those affected by Sexual Violence through building knowledge\, confidence and skills in frontline workers. \nMost recently Maria has become the interim Head of Training leading in the development and delivery of training for LimeCulture in their Sexual Violence\, Safeguarding\, Education and University work. \nPrior to joining the LimeCulture Team she was a specialist-safeguarding nurse for the largest children’s hospital in the UK. She has also worked as an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA) and a Crisis Worker at a Sexual Assault Referral Centre. \n\nKarl Hopwood : E-Safety Expert \nKarl Hopwood is an esafety expert. He is a member of UKCCIS (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and sits on the advisory board for the new UK Safer Internet Centre. Karl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission and several Local Authorities within the UK. As an ex headteacher\, he continues to work closely with children\, young people\, parents and teachers to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl works closely with the Boarding Schools’ Association and supports many of their schools. He is also an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU safer internet programme. \n\nMarcus Erooga : Independent Safeguarding Consultant \nMarcus is an independent safeguarding and sexual abuse Consultant\, Researcher & Trainer. From 1999-2018 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield Centre for Applied Childhood\, Youth and Family Studies. He spent the majority of his employed career in various positions at the NSPCC\, as a practitioner\, team manager and Assistant Director for service delivery as well as service and policy development roles relating to child sexual abuse and sexual offending. \nHe has authored or edited some 80 publications on child abuse and sex offender related issues. Most recently this work has focused on organisational safeguarding. In 1989 he became Principal\, King William’s College\, Isle of Man and from 1996 to 2009 was Master of Haileybury. Haileybury became a fully co-educational school in 1998\, having admitted girls to its Sixth Form in 1973. The International Baccalaureate Diploma has been taught alongside A Level at Haileybury since1999. \nIn 2009 Stuart became General Secretary of the Association of Governors of Independent Schools (AGBIS) whose purpose was\, and is\, to provide advice\, support and training for the Governors of its 800 or so member schools. He retired from that post in August 2016 and continues to undertake consultancy work for independent schools in Britain\, some commissioned separately and some on behalf of AGBIS. \nStuart has been a governor of twelve schools. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England.

This seminar aims to help prospective houseparents get ahead of the game and make the first few weeks in post less stressful and more productive. \nBoarding students need continuity of care and a consistent approach to school processes. Schools need boarding staff who are happy and will stay in post. A positive start for a houseparent encourages long service and gives confidence to students and parents. \nThis seminar will explore the many factors and issues associated with taking on a new boarding house. Promotion to houseparent and additional responsibility for running a house is exciting\, but it can also be stressful. The training day will provide an opportunity for delegates to think about the ethos for their new house\, review and consider key issues for students\, staff\, policies and procedures and the demands of managing the physical building. The day will finish by looking at the elusive work-life balance and ways in which this can be achieved during a hectic life in a busy boarding school. \nIn advance of this session\, it would be helpful for delegates to have an overview of their school’s policies and procedures\, and those of the boarding house they are moving into. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. Previously\, he held leadership roles at Kingham Hill School in Oxfordshire\, including Head of Conduct and Head of Art. Mark recently earned distinction for his master’s dissertation\, which focused on the pressing issue of bullying perpetration in an East African school context. His research continues to inform his work\, equipping both the school and the wider community with strategies to foster a positive\, proactive approach to addressing bullying and promoting healthy relationships among young people and adults. \n\nBen Collingwood\, Partner\, Moore Barlow \nBen specialises in advising independent schools and other charities on wide ranging areas of education law\, with particular focus on reputation issues\, pastoral\, safeguarding\, historic abuse allegations\, SEN\, exclusions\, parent/pupil complaints\, data protection\, parent contracts\, admissions and staff matters of all types. \nHe has written and spoken widely on issues facing the independent schools sector\, providing comment in The Times\, The Guardian\, The Lawyer and Law Society’s Gazette and at the national conferences and training programmes for the various associations that support independent schools including BSA\, ISBA\, HMC\, IAPS and AGBIS. \nHe lives with his wife and three children in West Sussex. He has been a devoted surfer since his childhood and he loves to spend as much of his free time as possible in the sea and walking their pointers with his family. \n\nJamie Daniels\, Director\, PRS Training \nJamie has been interested in and teaching self-defence and martial arts for thirty years\, culminating in learning and instructing Krav Maga. In that time he has seen again and again how it’s not martial arts people need\, rather it is some simple physical techniques and a healthy dose of understanding as to what constitutes a dangerous situation\, how to spot one developing\, and what to do about it. As well as a history in the security industry\, Jamie has been working in the education sector for over 15 years. This has also helped Jamie understand the pressures and demands that young people face today. \n\n \nWendy Griffiths\, Chair\, Independent Schools Examinations Board  \nWendy has been Chair of the Board of the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB) since February 2022. Before this she was Head of Tudor Hall School\, an all-girls full boarding school. She has held the senior leadership roles of Director of Studies at St Catherine’s School\, Bramley\, and Senior Mistress at Tormead School\, Guildford.  During her time as Head Wendy was the Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA)\, a member of the Executive of the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) and Chair of the GSA Boarding Committee. She has previously served on board of five boarding prep schools and is currently on the board of Westbourne House School\, Chichester and on the Council of Wycombe Abbey. \n\nEd Gyde\, CEO\, Audience Social Marketing\, whose campaign experience includes delivering the ‘Talk to FRANK’ and ‘5 a day’ initiatives \nEd has lived and breathed health campaigns for two decades. Coming from a medical family he is Audience Social Marketing’s public health lead and has shaped many of the biggest national public health campaigns: ‘5 a day’\, Talk to FRANK (drugs education) and Know Your Limits (alcohol education). \n\nDr Jasmine Khouja\, Senior Research Associate\, The Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group\, University of Bristol \nJasmine’s work focuses on the causes and consequences of e-cigarette use as well as the potential impact that e-cigarette policy changes could have on adult smokers\, adult vapers and young people. Using a range of methods (including novel methods in genetic epidemiology)\, she has explored a wide variety of topics\, including the gateway hypothesis\, possible health effects of vaping\, and the potential impact of hypothetical e-liquid flavour bans. The overall aims of Jasmine’s research are to reduce health inequalities and to provide supporting evidence for policies and regulations which protect young people from harm and discourage smoking. \n\nAndrea Kis\, Doctoral Researcher\, University of Sussex \nAndrea lived in China from 2010 to 2019\, where she tutored and mentored middle school students\, taught at the Sir Horace Kadoorie Youth Development Center\, Sino-British College\, and at both JiaoTong and FuDan Universities in Shanghai. She is currently a departmental tutor in the Social Anthropology Department at the University of Sussex\, leading a seminar on Ethnography through Film while completing the final draft of her doctoral thesis on Chinese families’ elite education-migration to the UK. \n\n \nIan Lloyd\, Interim Deputy Head\, LVS Ascot \nIan has taken a rather non-standard route into education after having enjoyed successful careers in both engineering and financial services sectors.  During the first 14 years of his career\, Ian trained as an apprentice aircraft technician at British Aerospace before moving into high-street banking\, personal finance\, occupational pensions and high net worth client investment planning.  Moving into education in the early noughties\, he now has 20 years’ experience in the sector\, working in local government and state secondary schools before switching to the independent boarding school sector 8 years ago as Senior Deputy Headmaster of Myddelton College in North Wales and most recently Interim Deputy Head of LVS Ascot.  He is passionate about the judicious use of technology to support teaching\, learning and streamlining the administrative functions of education\, saving staff valuable time to focus on what they do best – supporting\, guiding and teaching children. \n\n \nAdam McRae-Taylor\, Legal Director\, Moore Barlow  \nAdam specialises in employment and education law and advises on issues such as unfair dismissal\, discrimination cases\, safeguarding\, parent contracts and data protection. Adam trained and qualified in employment law with a Magic Circle firm in London. Before joining the Schools & Charities Team at Moore Barlow\, he spent two years working in-house for a charity. \n\nSimon Pither\, Director\, PRS Training \nSimon started martial arts at a local Judo club when he was 14. Ten years later he got his first instructor qualification and has been teaching martial arts and running self-defence courses ever since\, culminating in his current role as the President of the UK Sector of the European Federation of Krav Maga. While running courses for students\, teachers\, nurses\, community clubs\, charities and corporate organisations over the years\, it became apparent that everyone wished they had learned it earlier. \n\n \nDr Chris Pyle\, Head\, Lancaster Royal Grammar School \nChris is Chair of the BSA State Boarding Forum. He has been Head of Lancaster Royal Grammar School since 2012.  The school has grown significantly over that period and has welcomed Sixth Form girls as boarders and day students. It has been judged Outstanding in all categories in three successive Ofsted boarding inspections. Chris was previously Deputy Head of the Perse School\, Cambridge. Before becoming a teacher he completed a PhD in Geography at Cambridge University and also worked in the water industry. He holds the NPQH\, is currently studying for the NPQEL in school leadership\, and is Executive Lead of the NNW Maths Hub. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society\, and regularly writes resources for schools on natural hazards and environmental change. \n\nPaddy Rockett\, Head of Middle School Boarding\, Reed’s School \nPaddy Rockett is the Head of Middle School Boarding/Housemaster at Reed’s School in Surrey. Paddy has been through the Pastoral Care module and Boarding Management module run by the BSA and is currently completing his Masters in Residential Education with the University of Buckingham. His current area of research is focussed on the development of life skills in boarding houses and the development of a national programme for life skills development. \nPreviously\, Paddy was a lead in the “Broadening the Curriculum” strategy of the University of Limerick designing a social responsibility module undertaken by first year students. As a Biology teacher he is interested in the use of VR and AR in the teaching of Science. He is also in interested in Pastoral care\, the development of Boarding nationally and internationally and social mobility. \n\nGuy Schady-Beckett\, Director and Head of Research\, Next Step Education \nGuy has served as Director and Head of Research at Next Step Education Limited\n(Independent Schools Show & Bonas MacFarlane) since 2014. Previously he ran Drayson Beckett Limited\, a specialist education consultancy working long-term with schools and universities on business development (with a focus on digital\ntransition)\, market research and brand / product repositioning for 20 years. Prior to that he taught English at Windlesham and Durston House. He holds a PhD and an MA in History from Birkbeck\, University of London\, with distinction honours\, as well as a second MA from University of the Arts London. His BA was in English from UCL. \n\nAshley Smith\, Deputy Head of Boarding\, Worthgate School \nAshley has quickly risen through the ranks at Worthgate in just under three years. Beginning at Worthgate on a zero-hour contract without experience in education or boarding\, and originally from a background in printing\, the transition into boarding has revealed a deep-seated purpose and passion for working with young people. Promoted to Deputy Head of Boarding in August 2024\, Ashley has a desire to guide students through their unique journeys\, striving to foster a nurturing environment and shape positive\, supportive\, and impactful experiences for students and staff alike. \n\n \nLotte Tulloch\, Head\, Denstone College \nLotte was previously the Deputy Head of Sedbergh School and a member of the Senior Leadership Team of Casterton\, Sedbergh Preparatory School. Lotte was educated at Loretto School\, Edinburgh and was awarded a Morehead-Cain Scholarship to the University of North Carolina where she graduated with a BA with Distinction in English Literature. Lotte gained her PGCE in secondary education from Buckingham University and studied for her Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA Education) at Keele University. Lotte has significant international experience and is passionate about British schools as pedagogical centres of excellence around the world. A champion of diversity and accessibility in independent education\, Lotte is an accomplished musician and a passionate fell runner. \n\nJessica Watts\, House Matron\, Abbey College Cambridge  \nJessica joined the boarding sector in September 2023 after a long career in NHS management\, working in hospitals\, ambulance services and public health\, having graduated in anatomical sciences and subsequently studied for a masters in health services management. Jessica currently works at Abbey College Cambridge\, an independent sixth form college\, as a House Matron\, having started as a House\nParent. Jessica is also a member of the Human Tissue Authority which regulates the use of human tissues and organs\, and holds sports volunteering positions in cricket and swimming. \n\n \nDavid Williams\, CEO\, I-GTM  \nDavid is the co-founder of I-GTM\, the leading provider of a travel record-keeping and management solution designed specifically for UK boarding schools. He advises a number of governments\, organisations and industry partners on online safety strategy and policy and has been appointed an expert child online protection adviser to the UN ITU and nominated by UK Government as an expert to the Council of Europe Tech Facilitated Gender Based Violence committee. David is a member of the UK Council for Internet Safety and has recently been invited to be a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Coalition for Digital Safety. David has led pioneering work\, such as the development of multi award winning resources and helplines for victims of online harm and\, with Plymouth University\, published a number of ground-breaking research reports. \n\nSpeakers from the BSA Team: \nKate Hollyer\, Executive Director\, Legal & Public Affairs & Partner\, BSA Group \nKate is Legal and Public Affairs Director of BSA Group and Director of BSA Legal Services Ltd. As a qualified solicitor with more than 10 years’ experience advising clients on UK immigration law\, Kate assists members with all immigration and safeguarding legal matters. Prior to joining BSA in 2022 Kate was Partner and Head of Department at a leading full-service UK law firm. Having resided in state\, preparatory and senior school boarding houses since 2014 with her Housemaster husband\, Kate has a unique perspective of boarding life. \n\n \nBethan Hudson\, Executive Director Specialist Services and Director\, BAISIS\, BAISIS \nBethan joined the BSA team as Training Manager in September 2017. Bethan has worked in two independent boarding schools in the UK and Switzerland\, the latter as Housemistress to 36 pupils. Following her time in Switzerland\, she was a Pastoral Manager for an inner-city state academy before working in the charity sector for Debrett’s running the ‘Debrett’s Foundation’ training programme. \nIn her role\, Bethan plans and manages all Day Seminars\, Conferences\, INSET and Consultancy\, as well as being Director of BAISIS. She believes boarding can be a positive force for young people and in order to fully support their needs staff can never learn too much. As such she is passionate about the CPD BSA delivers to our pastoral communities in the UK and worldwide. \n\n \nAileen Kane\, Chief Operating Officer\, BSA Group \nAileen is COO of BSA Group\, and the Director of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Aileen leads operations at BSA providing guidance and training and works closely with government departments\, local authorities and other agencies to support members. She heads up the group’s work to find places for refugee children escaping from conflict countries and is also a trustee for a children’s charity. \n\nDavid Walker\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB \nDavid is the Executive Director\, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB  and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n\n \nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance\, BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA in 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter\, and has developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis. \n\n \nDale Wilkins : Senior Director BSA Group \nDale Wilkins spent 31 years working in schools\, mainly in residential education\, of which eleven years were as safeguarding lead. He has also had safeguarding responsibilities in youth group\, sports and church settings\, was a multi-agency safeguarding trainer for Dudley Safeguarding Children Board and has completed an extensive “Train the Trainer” course with NSPCC. In September 2017 he took over safeguarding responsibilities at BSA\, and subsequently BSA Group and SACPA. HE also gave evidence to the IICSA inquiry on behalf of BSA. \n\nNikki Holmes : Safer Together\nContextual Safeguarding and Exploitation \nNikki has served as a police officer\, been a service manager for a young person’ substance misuse service\, is an experienced Children’s Services Inspector for the CQC\, and more recently launched her own consultancy Safer Together www.safer-together.co.uk\, which is a proud member of the WeProtect Global Alliance. \nAn expert in safeguarding with expertise and extensive experience of working in the fields of Child Exploitation\, County Lines and Modern Slavery\, Nikki now provides independent consultancy and training to a range of organisations including the NHS and Local Authorities. \nNikki is also a guest lecturer\, a public speaker and an independent author of Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews\, Safeguarding Adult Reviews and Domestic Homicide Reviews. \n\n Dez Holmes : Director\, Research in Practice\nDez Holmes is the Director of Research in Practice\, a not-for-profit organisation that since 1996 has been supporting those who work with children\, families and adults to use evidence\nin their practice and leadership. Dez has several years’ experience of training and workforce and leadership development; she is the Programme Director for the Practice Supervisor Development Programme. Her practice experience is largely within youth offending services and early help. The last 14 years of his police service was in the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU). He is also qualified as the following: \nFamily Liaison Officer (FLO)\, Disaster Victim Identification Officer (DVI)\, Significant Witness interviewer (Sig Wit)\, Enhanced Cognitive Witness Interviewer\, Domestic Abuse Officer\, PIP Level 2 investigator\, Achieving Best Evidence (ABE- VRI vulnerable and intimidated witness interviewer)\, Specialist Child Abuse Investigative Development Programme (SCAIDP)\, Joint Investigator – Section 47 Children Act ‘89 \nPhilip was also seconded to the Training Department for 2 years\, where he received qualifications in training and delivered all these subjects\, including Harmful Sexual Behaviours (HSB). Philip is a qualified AIM3 Assessor of children displaying HSB. Philip also quality assured the Home Office Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Service (HSBSS) where he oversaw and triaged all the requests for support and advised personally on all the complex cases.
