Over the last 20 years  approx. 3000 House Tutors\, Matrons\, Support Staff\, School Nurses\, Assistants\, House Parents and HsMs have completed this Award. \n\nPart 1: BSA Certificate in Boarding Practice – Pastoral Care\n\nand one of these: \n\nPart 2: BSA Advanced Certificate in Boarding Practice – Boarding Management\nPart 2: BSA Advanced Certificate in Boarding Practice for School Nurses\nPart 2: BSA Certificate in Boarding Practice – Pupil Support and Welfare\nPart 2: BSA Advanced Certificate in Boarding Practice – International Students\n\nWhat does this course cover? \nThis course is taken by both graduate teaching and non-graduate house staff\, including matrons\, assistant house staff and house parents\, with responsibility for the care and welfare of boarding pupils. Group discussion is a particularly important aspect of this module\, enabling you to look at the theory in the light of your own practical experience. When they leave us\, do we give them as much help and support to manage the transition from the school (where their needs are being met by a dedicated team of professional and caring individuals)\, to the next phase where they must begin fending for themselves?  \nIt is essential we consider the ongoing success and wellbeing of our students\, alongside their academic successes and the impact these will have on life after school.  \nBy the end of the session\, delegates should have a better understanding of what the needs of school leavers are\, and have developed an initial “Outduction” plan for your school  \nTraining topics will include:  \n\nMeeting students’ needs post school – this session will investigate the needs of students who are leaving school (managing time\, relationships and finances) and the potential pitfalls they might encounter along the way \nThe Six Human Needs model – this session will investigate why students behave the way they do when they leave school and then ways in which staff can put some certainty into an uncertain world for them after school \nDeveloping an “Outduction” programme – this session will involve working in groups to develop an initial school “Outduction” programme to suit the needs of your students and your environment \nContinuation of group work – the training day will finish with a collation of all the points raised in the group work to share\, review and take away \n\nLearning outcomes:   \n\nAn increased understanding of the specific needs of senior students leaving the school community\, and why students behave the way they do \nAn increased understanding of the soft skills required on leaving school \nA draft “Outduction” programme bespoke to your students and school. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

It has been judged Outstanding in all categories in three successive Ofsted boarding inspections. Chris was previously Deputy Head of the Perse School\, Cambridge. Before becoming a teacher he completed a PhD in Geography at Cambridge University and also worked in the water industry. He holds the NPQH\, is currently studying for the NPQEL in school leadership\, and is Executive Lead of the NNW Maths Hub. He has been a devoted surfer since his childhood and he loves to spend as much of his free time as possible in the sea and walking their pointers with his family. \n\n\n\n\n\nJamie Daniels\, Director\, PRS Training \nJamie has been interested in and teaching self-defence and martial arts for thirty years\, culminating in learning and instructing Krav Maga. In that time he has seen again and again how it’s not martial arts people need\, rather it is some simple physical techniques and a healthy dose of understanding as to what constitutes a dangerous situation\, how to spot one developing\, and what to do about it. As well as a history in the security industry\, Jamie has been working in the education sector for over 15 years. This has also helped Jamie understand the pressures and demands that young people face today. \n\n\n\n\nJane Gandee\, Head\, St Swithun’s School \nJane began her teaching career in 1993 having dabbled briefly in accountancy after a degree in French and Spanish at Girton College\, Cambridge. She taught languages at Lord Wandsworth College and Oakham School before becoming head of Spanish and then head of languages at Queenswood School. In 2005\, she became director of studies at City of London School for Girls and she took up her current post in 2010. Jane is a keen sportswoman\, having represented Cambridge at athletics and cross country and captained the university women’s football team. She still runs competitively when time allows and particularly enjoys running with colleagues at BSA conferences. \n\n \nJim Lawless\, CEO\, SYMMETRY and Bestselling Author  \nBeginning his career as a solicitor\, Jim now helps clients adjust to the future of work and the constant rate of change in modern society. He has worked with the likes of ITV\, BP\, Fiat\, Virgin\, Vitality\, Xerox\, Microsoft\, Unilever and Apple. Author of “Taming Tigers: Do Things You Never Thought You Could”\, Jim has developed several rules to change a business or an individual’s life around. These rules have been tried and tested by Jim himself\, by becoming a televised jockey in 12 months and taking the British freediving record. Jim was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts in recognition of his business writing. \n\n \nCarrie Herbert MBE\, Chair and Founder\, Red Balloon Learning \nCarrie trained as a teacher before emigrating to Australia\, returned to the UK in the eighties to complete a Master’s Degree at UEA and a PhD at Cambridge. Carrie worked as a consultant in equal opportunities before founding Red Balloon in 1996. She has written a number of books on the subject of bullying and harassment in schools and in the workplace. Carrie Herbert was Master of the WC of Cutlers from 2020-2022. \n\n \nGareth Jones\, Head\, Bilton Grange Prep  \nGareth has worked in prep boarding schools for over 25 years\, leading two over the last 10 years. Formerly a Housemaster and Director of Sport at the Dragon School\, Oxford\, he then became Head of St Andrew’s Prep\, Eastbourne before taking up his current role as Head of Bilton Grange Prep\, part of the Rugby School Group\, in September 2021. Gareth sits on the IAPS Pastoral Committee\, having also sat on their Sports Committee previously\, and has experience of governance in both the independent and state sectors. \n\nMark Lauder FTIOB\, Head\, Strathallan School \nMark began his teaching career at Shiplake College in Henley-on-Thames\, where he was Head of the History Department\, Resident Tutor and Master I/C of Rowing. He then headed to Oxford in 1999\, to become Head of History at St Edward’s School\, as well as a Housemaster. Maria has many years’ experience in handling sensitive and complex cases for clients. She is a specialist in investigations and a trained interviewer. Maria advises on all aspects of employment and equality law and was the lead author of the AGBIS Resource for Governors on Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Dale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit\, which was updated in 2022. \n\nIdentity\, Belonging and Connectedness.  \nThis session will explore the notions of identity\, belonging and connectedness. Ammy Davis Potter will share her own stories of identity and belonging as well as her experiences of working with young people in schools. How do our different and often intersecting identities shape our capacity to belong and connect and how can schools provide an environment where connectedness thrives? \n\nCase Studies\, Discussion and Closing Remarks \nThis session will be similar to the one at the end of day 1 in that it will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand from school leaders about EDI work in their schools. The case studies will cover a range of different areas to complement those discussed on day 1. Participants will then have the chance to meet and discuss EDI work in their schools with other Inclusion Lead colleagues (in small zoom break out groups). She oversees the boarding houses\, medical centre\, safeguarding team\, student services\, and the pastoral systems at the school. Originally a languages teacher (French\, Welsh\, English & Spanish)\, Sara’s other previous roles include Head of Welsh Baccalaureate\, Head of Sixth Form and Deputy Headteacher. She has worked in a variety of schools both in the UK and abroad. \n  \nSpeaker: Naomi Angelica Vibrati\, Lead School Counsellor and a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at ACS Cobham \nNaomi Angelica Vibrati is the Lead School Counsellor and a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at ACS Cobham. After a decade leading Uppingham and 32 years overall in teaching\, he embarked on a third career as Chief Executive of AGBIS. Richard is much enjoying the challenges at AGBIS\, having been Chairman of the Boarding Schools’ Association for 2011-12 and Chairman of HMC for 2014-15.

His collaborative approach involves working closely with key partner agencies including local councils\, NHS services\, and social services departments to develop comprehensive fraud prevention activities. \n\n \nSusan Fang\, Founder\, UK Guardianship \nIn 2009\, Susan Fang came to London from Taipei with her two daughters\, aged 4 and 5. She realised how lucky they were to have their mother with them to enrol them into great schools and that most international families don’t have that luxury. She arrived in the UK at 14 and remembered how difficult it was not knowing much English\, being bullied in the playground\, and having no one to advocate for her as her parents didn’t speak English. Using her initiative\, Susan successfully applied for and took entrance tests to get into North London Collegiate School for sixth form and later at Cambridge University. This role involves working with senior leaders to discuss EDI strategic decisions and policy\, working with both Teaching and Professional Services staff to foster a more inclusive community\, and working with the pupil led Voices4Change group. Our Caterham Voice4Change group actively promotes diversity and inclusion across all aspects of school\, organising awareness raising events\, driving positive reflection and actioning change\, creating celebratory resources\, as well as leading assemblies. \n\nEd Boulter-Comer\, Houseparent\, Fettes College \nEd Started teaching in the Independent Sector in 2002. The State Sector could not employ him at that point as he was gay\, very much out of the closet\, and Section 28 still forbade the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality. Being a teacher well before sexual orientation became a protected characteristic in 2010\, he has forged a career of ‘firsts’ in the schools he has worked in. First out teacher. First out teacher in a boarding House. First teacher to get a civil partnership. First teacher to have adoption leave. First gay Houseparent. Going first can be a leap of faith for individuals and institutions and Ed will share some of the ways in which he has brought people along with him over the past two decades. \nEd is the Houseparent of a Senior Boy’s House at Fettes College in Edinburgh. He\, his husband\, and their two children live alongside 60 students\, not all of whom are boys. \n\nM Jolly\, Director of Wellbeing and Inclusion\, Charterhouse School \nM Jolly is the director of wellbeing and inclusion and senior leader at Charter House school. She is also a qualified therapist and clinical Supervisor. She has worked in schools with young people for over ten years and is creating real change within her school. M Jolly\, harnesses student voice to bring awareness to the school community and beyond about important issues. The EDI vision between 2021-2023 has placed emphasis on allyship and anti-discrimination\, culminating in pupil-led Charters for Anti-Racism\, Anti-Sexism\, LGBTQ+ and Anti-Bullying. Her school were recently awarded The Rainbow Flag Award\, in recognition of their pro-active and whole School approach to the positive inclusion and visibility of LGBT+ people.

He was recently part of an expert steering group with TikTok looking at harmful and dangerous online challenges. \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. \nAs an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents\, teachers and governors to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 16 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has recently worked with a team developing a national online safety strategy in Rwanda and chaired the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance.

He worked briefly as a specialist advisor on two World Health Organization projects before becoming the lead for early help within a large unitary authority. \nHe worked as an education safeguarding advisor supporting 530 schools and for the past 6 years has worked as the National Director of Safeguarding & Mental Health in a multi-academy trust. He holds a PhD in Education (Safeguarding) from Liverpool Hope University. Jon is co-chair of the Pan-London Education Safeguarding Board\, founder member of the National Association of Academy Safeguarding Advisors (NAASA) and co-chairs the Coalition of Mental health provision between the State and Independent Sector. He also acts as a mentor to five young men starting in business ensuring that they develop to their full potential. In his spare time\, he is a voluntary youth worker. When (if) he ever relaxes he is a keen fan of Korean dramas (though must use subtitles). \n\nMike Grenier\, Deputy Head Pastoral\, Eton College \nMike oversees all our pastoral care for boys and so works closely with the Stephenson Centre for Wellbeing\, the Health Centre\, the Director of Safeguarding\, the Director of SPHERE\, the Director of Inclusion Education\, the Head of Access\, the Heads of Block as well as House Masters and Dames. \nMike studied English Literature at undergraduate level at the University of Oxford and has a PGDE from Edge Hill University. He was a House Master from 2004-17 in Wotton House and from 2019-21 in Evans’s House. His wife\, Emma\, is a physiotherapist\, and they have a daughter and a son. He is currently a governor at two prep schools. \n\nAlice Vicary-Stott\, Director of Safeguarding\, Eton College \nAlice takes specific responsibility for all safeguarding and child protection matters in the school. \nShe exercises her responsibilities in conjunction with four Deputy DSLs\, who are currently the Deputy Head (Pastoral)\, the Safeguarding Co-Ordinator\, the Head of D Block and the Director of SPHERE. \nAlice has a degree in Social Work\, and has worked in Children’s Social Care throughout her career in a variety of Social Care departments. This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to boarding. In advance of the seminar\, it is recommended that delegates familiarise themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the boarding section of their school’s website and boarding promotional material. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nSafeguarding and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding in England – this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools\nMeeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding\, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by the pastoral team\nUnderstanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school\nWorking safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy\, safe and enjoying your role in boarding!\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding\, and their role within that\nAn increased confidence to be able to support the young people in your care\nIncreased awareness of the legal context\, safeguarding and National Minimum Standards for Boarding in England.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

For those inspected by ISI\, there will be a particular focus on the detail of the current framework \nCurrent trends and concerns in safeguarding\nA review of current issues leading to non-compliance \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nIncreased understanding of relevant legislative and guidance updates\nRecommendations of how to ensure new guidance has been embedded into both policy and practice\nEnsuring compliance matters are fully reflected in current procedures\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.
