David qualified as a Barrister before moving into the City\, holding several senior management and executive positions in the National Westminster Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland. This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to boarding. The sooner staff new to boarding have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties\, feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges. \nThis seminar will cover the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and meeting boarders’ needs. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. In advance of the seminar\, it is recommended that delegates familiarise themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the boarding section of their school’s website and boarding promotional material. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nSafeguarding and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding in England – this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools\nMeeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding\, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by the pastoral team\nUnderstanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school\nWorking safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy\, safe and enjoying your role in boarding!\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding\, and their role within that\nAn increased confidence to be able to support the young people in your care\nIncreased awareness of the legal context\, safeguarding and National Minimum Standards for Boarding in England.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

It is relevant also to those who have recently taken up a new position\, allowing time for reflection on personal skills and how they work in a leadership role. \nThere is often a huge focus on equipping leaders in the classroom with the necessary skills to achieve the best outcomes for pupils\, but the skills required by pastoral leaders are often more subtle\, more wide-ranging and can often have a greater impact for the children in the school. Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the daily lives of all within the boarding house and community. \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England. \n\nSkyler Moulder\, Lead Nurse\, The Leys School and Senior Nurse Advisor\, HIEDA \nSkyler did her Adult Nursing BSc at Kings College London in 2011 and went straight into community nursing. After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). This is where she is now and where her passion for independent school nursing started. \n\nSarah Knight\, Founder and CEO\, The Allergy Team \nSarah Knight is Founder and CEO of The Allergy Team\, an organisation which supports schools\, food businesses and families to manage food allergies. DESCRIPTION:The Closing date for September 2025 applications is 30 July 2025\n\nCourse outline\nThe MA in Residential Education is a one-year\, part-time course for those working in or with an interest in boarding schools.  It is offered in partnership with the Boarding Schools’ Association. This course allows those with experience in boarding\, who are keen to research\, to write about a topic of interest to them.  The heart of the MA is a 12\,000-15\,000 word dissertation.  You will do a literature review\, which informs your dissertation\, and you will learn about different research methods.  You will be expected to read widely. He is a member of UKCIS (UK Council for Internet Safety) and sits on the UKCIS evidence group\, education working group and the early warning group as well as on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre. He also sits on the Roblox trust and safety board where he represents the Insafe network. He was part of an expert steering group with TikTok looking at harmful and dangerous online challenges and regularly contributes to content for Internet Matters\, recently delivering their online safety training for those working with children in care commissioned by Ofcom. \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. \nAs an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents\, teachers and governors to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 19 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines and awareness centres across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is now Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has also worked with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and chaired the working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance.

He holds extensive experience tackling a wide range of complex radicalisation cases in various roles\, including as a Social Worker within Children’s Services\, as Channel Coordinator within Prevent and as the Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within an NHS mental health Trust. Furthermore\, Thomas is a PhD candidate in Social Work and Social Care investigating the radicalisation of young men and the role of masculinity in violent extremism. \nThomas is a qualified Social Worker with a background in Children’s services and holds years of experience in multi-agency safeguarding work. His work spans across safeguarding children and adults from a range of harms\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, criminal exploitation\, county lines\, modern slavery and radicalisation. Thomas is passionate about supporting professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns\, and is using his PhD research to build a practical tool to support social workers to assess and safeguard males whom are vulnerable to radicalisation. \nIn his current role as Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT)\, Thomas provides regular trainings to staff and teams across the Trust\, including Prevent Awareness\, Workshop to Raise Awareness on Prevent (WRAP)\, and Safeguarding Adults. Thomas also offers regular expert consultations to support staff to respond to complex radicalisation concerns across the Trust\, and is the SPFT representative in the Prevent’s Channel Panels across Sussex that provide a multi-agency approach to safeguarding those assessed as vulnerable to radicalisation. Moreover\, Thomas contributes to the development and updating of Policy within SPFT to structurally respond to emerging safeguarding concerns regarding radicalisation. \nOver the years\, Thomas has gathered substantial knowledge and practical expertise on the multi-faceted dynamics of safeguarding and radicalisation. His unique position of both working in and researching on this issue provides unique insights into this complex area of safeguarding. Thomas is available to deliver Prevent training to a range of organisations\, which will cover the key features of Prevent Awareness and Prevent WRAP\, including CONTEST\, the statutory duty under Counter Terrorism Security Act 2015 known as the ‘Prevent Duty’\, Vulnerabilities to Radicalisation\, Extremist Ideology and groups\, Current Threat Level\, and the Channel Panel process. Thomas will provide an opportunity to have a nuanced and critical discussion about this important and complex area of safeguarding.

He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n\n \nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998.  Dale leads on all safeguarding\, inspection and compliance matters for BSA Group\, including liaising with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE in England\, and leading on the group’s work in Scotland and Wales. He trains and delivers consultancy extensively for BSA and SACPA and is Vice Chair of the Group’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Advisory Board (SAFCAB). \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board\, is a safeguarding trainer for the Methodist Church\, is a trustee of the National Youth String Orchestra and chair of a small performing arts charity. He also holds volunteer roles in sport and in the Scout Association.
