She is also a senior accredited member of The National Counselling Society and The Association for Coaching. \nAfter graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Counselling & Psychotherapy\, Lisa went on to work with adults to overcome addiction and mental health issues. Having experienced chronic ill health for many years\, Lisa developed a keen interest in brain health and the brain / mind/ body connection. Lisa was fascinated by how our minds can influence our wellbeing and vice versa. After overcoming her own health issues\, she then specialised in the field of chronic ill health and stress. The specific focus of her work addresses the mind-body connection and the impact our language (self-talk) and belief system has on all aspects of health and wellbeing as well as self-esteem and confidence. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

He holds extensive experience tackling a wide range of complex radicalisation cases in various roles\, including as a Social Worker within Children’s Services\, as Channel Coordinator within Prevent and as the Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within an NHS mental health Trust. Furthermore\, Thomas is a PhD candidate in Social Work and Social Care investigating the radicalisation of young men and the role of masculinity in violent extremism. \nThomas is a qualified Social Worker with a background in Children’s services and holds years of experience in multi-agency safeguarding work. His work spans across safeguarding children and adults from a range of harms\, including domestic abuse\, sexual exploitation\, criminal exploitation\, county lines\, modern slavery and radicalisation. Thomas is passionate about supporting professionals to respond to safeguarding concerns\, and is using his PhD research to build a practical tool to support social workers to assess and safeguard males whom are vulnerable to radicalisation. \nIn his current role as Prevent Practitioner/Deputy Named Safeguarding Professional within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT)\, Thomas provides regular trainings to staff and teams across the Trust\, including Prevent Awareness\, Workshop to Raise Awareness on Prevent (WRAP)\, and Safeguarding Adults. Thomas also offers regular expert consultations to support staff to respond to complex radicalisation concerns across the Trust\, and is the SPFT representative in the Prevent’s Channel Panels across Sussex that provide a multi-agency approach to safeguarding those assessed as vulnerable to radicalisation. Moreover\, Thomas contributes to the development and updating of Policy within SPFT to structurally respond to emerging safeguarding concerns regarding radicalisation. \nOver the years\, Thomas has gathered substantial knowledge and practical expertise on the multi-faceted dynamics of safeguarding and radicalisation. His unique position of both working in and researching on this issue provides unique insights into this complex area of safeguarding. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nDavid Walker\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB  \nDavid is the BSA Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to boarding. The sooner staff new to boarding have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise.  \n This seminar will cover the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and meeting boarders’ needs. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

Young people are growing up in a world where they are very likely to encounter and could experiment with vaping or other substances. Since leaving the police Dave over the last 17 years has delivered hundreds of Drug Awareness Sessions to Schools and Colleges all over the country engaging with all parties (Students/Staff and Parental Sessions) to ensure his key message about raising the awareness of the real risks and dangers associated with many substances young people in particular are likely to come into contact with. He does not preach and delivers his presentations in a ‘non judgemental manner’ in his own ‘unique style’\, ensuring that his audiences engage with him from the very minute he starts to speak. He also has strong links with NAMSS (National Association for Managers of Student Services) and for the BSA (Boarding School Association) delivering bespoke Drug Awareness Training events for their staff (including work overseas with international schools).

Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

Melissa began lecturing on the BSC Hons and MSc degrees in Physiotherapy at Kings College London. After relocating to Dorset\, Melissa started working at Canford School\, setting up the physiotherapy service\, tutoring in a girls Boarding House and teaching PSHE. Melissa has been at Canford 10 years. 3 years ago\, Melissa was successful in being appointed as Head of Wellbeing. As part of this role\, Melissa qualified as a Sleep Practitioner and began the drive to improve sleep health. Melissa’s passion for educating and empowering people drives her work\, looking at holistic and preventative approaches underpinning the wellbeing work they do.

Expectations on Governors\nJuly 2\, 2025\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers: \nRichard Harman\, Chief Executive\, AGBIS \nRichard Harman was educated at The King’s School\, Worcester\, followed by Trinity College\, Cambridge\, where he read English.  Having spent two years working for an academic publisher\, he decided his real vocation was in teaching.  After five years at Marlborough College teaching English and Drama\, during which time he also completed his PGCE at Exeter University\, he spent 12 years at Eastbourne College.  Progressing from Head of English to Housemaster of a Sixth Form girls’ house to member of the Senior Management Team\, he then became Headmaster of Aldenham in September 2000 and thence to Uppingham in 2006. After a decade leading Uppingham and 32 years overall in teaching\, he embarked on a third career as Chief Executive of AGBIS. Richard is much enjoying the challenges at AGBIS\, having been Chairman of the Boarding Schools’ Association for 2011-12 and Chairman of HMC for 2014-15. \nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance\, BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

He has occupied senior leadership and management positions ever since including as Principal of three colleges with international students: Cambridge Tutors College in Surrey\, CATS College in London and Bishopstrow College in Wiltshire. He has also served as Chief Operations Officer of an Academy Trust in London and as a secondary school governor. Mario’s experience extends to both the independent and state sectors and in both day and boarding schools. He has led schools through highly successful inspections and has served as an ISI school inspector. He has also been a trustee on the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) and served as Chair of the Council for Independent Further Education (CIFE). The sooner your new Graduate and GAP assistants have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise.  \n This seminar will compliment a school-based induction and enable your new Graduate and GAP assistants to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to make the best possible start to their role in boarding in your school.  \n This seminar will cover relevant aspects of the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and ways in which delegates can meet the emotional needs of the boarders in their care. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house.  \n In advance of the seminar\, it is recommended that delegates have familiarised themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the boarding section of the schools’ website and promotional material that relate to boarding. Delegates should also be familiar with and have signed Part 1 of KCSIE 2023/24.  \n Delegates will be provided with a workbook including core information relating to boarding and safeguarding for their year involved in the boarding sector.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe legal framework and Duty of Care - this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools \nMeeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding\, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by those in a Graduate or GAP assistant position \nUnderstanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents\, along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school \nWorking safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy\, safe and enjoying your role in boarding! \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding\, stake holders\, and the role of the Graduate and GAP assistants within that \nAn increased confidence to be able to meet the needs of the boarders in their care.\nIncreased awareness of the legal context\, safeguarding\, KCSIE Part 1 and National Minimum Standards for Boarding and other relevant guidance for those outside England. \nRecommendations and reasons for best practice and looking after yourself\, setting professional boundaries and working as a team. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.
