However\, staff CPD opportunities seldom focus on these key areas. \n As part of a refocus of the training available through the BSA Group and Hieda\, we can now offer a standalone Professional Practice Certificate for school staff on medical matters. \nThis course will link professional practice with current research and best practice to provide a unique opportunity for non-registered medical staff\, whether working in relative isolation or as part of the medical team\, to development their knowledge\, skills and practice across a wide range of the key current themes/topics most relevant to their role. This seminar aims to help prospective houseparents get ahead of the game and make the first few weeks in post less stressful and more productive. \nBoarding students need continuity of care and a consistent approach to school processes. Schools need boarding staff who are happy and will stay in post. A positive start for a houseparent encourages long service and gives confidence to students and parents. \nThis seminar will explore the many factors and issues associated with taking on a new boarding house. Promotion to houseparent and additional responsibility for running a house is exciting\, but it can also be stressful. The training day will provide an opportunity for delegates to think about the ethos for their new house\, review and consider key issues for students\, staff\, policies and procedures and the demands of managing the physical building. The day will finish by looking at the elusive work-life balance and ways in which this can be achieved during a hectic life in a busy boarding school. \nIn advance of this session\, it would be helpful for delegates to have an overview of their school’s policies and procedures\, and those of the boarding house they are moving into. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors. \n“Well worth attending if you have aspirations in boarding. She has held the senior leadership roles of Director of Studies at St Catherine’s School\, Bramley\, and Senior Mistress at Tormead School\, Guildford.  During her time as Head Wendy was the Chair of the Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA)\, a member of the Executive of the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) and Chair of the GSA Boarding Committee. She has previously served on board of five boarding prep schools and is currently on the board of Westbourne House School\, Chichester and on the Council of Wycombe Abbey. \n\nEd Gyde\, CEO\, Audience Social Marketing\, whose campaign experience includes delivering the ‘Talk to FRANK’ and ‘5 a day’ initiatives \nEd has lived and breathed health campaigns for two decades. Coming from a medical family he is Audience Social Marketing’s public health lead and has shaped many of the biggest national public health campaigns: ‘5 a day’\, Talk to FRANK (drugs education) and Know Your Limits (alcohol education). \n\nDr Jasmine Khouja\, Senior Research Associate\, The Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group\, University of Bristol \nJasmine’s work focuses on the causes and consequences of e-cigarette use as well as the potential impact that e-cigarette policy changes could have on adult smokers\, adult vapers and young people. Using a range of methods (including novel methods in genetic epidemiology)\, she has explored a wide variety of topics\, including the gateway hypothesis\, possible health effects of vaping\, and the potential impact of hypothetical e-liquid flavour bans. The overall aims of Jasmine’s research are to reduce health inequalities and to provide supporting evidence for policies and regulations which protect young people from harm and discourage smoking. \n\nAndrea Kis\, Doctoral Researcher\, University of Sussex \nAndrea lived in China from 2010 to 2019\, where she tutored and mentored middle school students\, taught at the Sir Horace Kadoorie Youth Development Center\, Sino-British College\, and at both JiaoTong and FuDan Universities in Shanghai. She is currently a departmental tutor in the Social Anthropology Department at the University of Sussex\, leading a seminar on Ethnography through Film while completing the final draft of her doctoral thesis on Chinese families’ elite education-migration to the UK. \n\n \nIan Lloyd\, Interim Deputy Head\, LVS Ascot \nIan has taken a rather non-standard route into education after having enjoyed successful careers in both engineering and financial services sectors.  During the first 14 years of his career\, Ian trained as an apprentice aircraft technician at British Aerospace before moving into high-street banking\, personal finance\, occupational pensions and high net worth client investment planning.  Moving into education in the early noughties\, he now has 20 years’ experience in the sector\, working in local government and state secondary schools before switching to the independent boarding school sector 8 years ago as Senior Deputy Headmaster of Myddelton College in North Wales and most recently Interim Deputy Head of LVS Ascot.  He is passionate about the judicious use of technology to support teaching\, learning and streamlining the administrative functions of education\, saving staff valuable time to focus on what they do best – supporting\, guiding and teaching children. \n\n \nAdam McRae-Taylor\, Legal Director\, Moore Barlow  \nAdam specialises in employment and education law and advises on issues such as unfair dismissal\, discrimination cases\, safeguarding\, parent contracts and data protection. Adam trained and qualified in employment law with a Magic Circle firm in London. Before joining the Schools & Charities Team at Moore Barlow\, he spent two years working in-house for a charity. \n\nSimon Pither\, Director\, PRS Training \nSimon started martial arts at a local Judo club when he was 14. Ten years later he got his first instructor qualification and has been teaching martial arts and running self-defence courses ever since\, culminating in his current role as the President of the UK Sector of the European Federation of Krav Maga. While running courses for students\, teachers\, nurses\, community clubs\, charities and corporate organisations over the years\, it became apparent that everyone wished they had learned it earlier. \n\n \nDr Chris Pyle\, Head\, Lancaster Royal Grammar School \nChris is Chair of the BSA State Boarding Forum. He has been Head of Lancaster Royal Grammar School since 2012.  The school has grown significantly over that period and has welcomed Sixth Form girls as boarders and day students. It has been judged Outstanding in all categories in three successive Ofsted boarding inspections. Chris was previously Deputy Head of the Perse School\, Cambridge. Before becoming a teacher he completed a PhD in Geography at Cambridge University and also worked in the water industry. He holds the NPQH\, is currently studying for the NPQEL in school leadership\, and is Executive Lead of the NNW Maths Hub. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society\, and regularly writes resources for schools on natural hazards and environmental change. \n\nPaddy Rockett\, Head of Middle School Boarding\, Reed’s School \nPaddy Rockett is the Head of Middle School Boarding/Housemaster at Reed’s School in Surrey. Paddy has been through the Pastoral Care module and Boarding Management module run by the BSA and is currently completing his Masters in Residential Education with the University of Buckingham. His current area of research is focussed on the development of life skills in boarding houses and the development of a national programme for life skills development. \nPreviously\, Paddy was a lead in the “Broadening the Curriculum” strategy of the University of Limerick designing a social responsibility module undertaken by first year students. As a Biology teacher he is interested in the use of VR and AR in the teaching of Science. He is also in interested in Pastoral care\, the development of Boarding nationally and internationally and social mobility. \n\nGuy Schady-Beckett\, Director and Head of Research\, Next Step Education \nGuy has served as Director and Head of Research at Next Step Education Limited\n(Independent Schools Show & Bonas MacFarlane) since 2014. Previously he ran Drayson Beckett Limited\, a specialist education consultancy working long-term with schools and universities on business development (with a focus on digital\ntransition)\, market research and brand / product repositioning for 20 years. It is relevant also to those who have recently taken up a new position\, allowing time for reflection on personal skills and how they work in a leadership role. \nThere is often a huge focus on equipping leaders in the classroom with the necessary skills to achieve the best outcomes for pupils\, but the skills required by pastoral leaders are often more subtle\, more wide-ranging and can often have a greater impact for the children in the school. Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the daily lives of all within the boarding house and community. \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

The last 14 years of his police service was in the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU). The sooner your new GAP assistants have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding and understand their safeguarding responsibilities\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties\, feel able to support young people in their care and deal with any challenges. \nThis seminar will compliment a school-based induction and enable your new GAP assistants to have the knowledge and skills to make the best possible start to their boarding role. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

He is the author of five books on PSHE-related topics\, including Getting Physical\, which won The Times Educational Supplement’s Information Book Award. \nMy talk on pupils Vaping: What you Need to Know Now\, trying to dissuade pupils from vaping involves an eclectic mix of harnessing their suspicion of big business exploiting them as well as clearly explaining new found effects of vaping that would matter to them today – with clear evidence to back it up. There are significant medical concerns regarding vaping even without nicotine due to the flavours and scents used.  If students do vape\, are they are addicted and if so\, how they can quit? \n\nAn Introduction to Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion in Schools with Gaelle Sullivan\, Director Research and Inclusion\, Director TIOB \nUsing the BSA Index (Inclusion and Diversity Excellence) Framework and Toolkit\, this session will provide an introductory overview to this important work in schools. \n\n\nGaelle is Head of Research Services and Inclusion and joined the BSA in January 2023. She is an experienced senior leader and has worked in a range of state and independent schools. She is a qualified SENCO and holds a Masters Degree in Inclusive Education. Group discussion is a particularly important aspect of this course\, enabling delegates to look at the theory in light of their own practical experience. Students will be encouraged to contribute ideas\, opinions and questions\, taking responsibility for their own learning\, whilst contributing to the learning of the group as a whole. The course is run by senior members of the BSA staff. \n\nDr Tara Porter\, Clinical Psychologist and Writer \nShe worked in the NHS for over 25 years in child and adolescent mental health and has her own successful private practice.  She is the author of the Sunday Times Best Selling “You Don’t Understand Me: The Young Woman’s guide to Life” which has also been translated and published around the world.  She writes articles about mental health in journals and the mainstream media.  Tara is an Associate Tutor on the doctorate programme for Clinical Psychologists at UCL. Alicia also works directly with children and young people empowering them to look after their own mental health and wellbeing. After completing an English Literature degree at Cambridge University\, she achieved a second degree in Psychology whilst teaching and working in SEN provision. She then completed her doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology at the University of East London\, which explored self-harm in educational contexts.  Jody is experienced in contributing to the assessment and psychological treatment of developmental difficulties\, learning needs and child/adolescent mental health.  She is also a Consultant Psychologist\, providing consultations for foster carers and supervising social workers with the Compass Community as part of their REACH approach. Jenny specialised in CBT and has a passion for working with teenagers and young adults. \nJenny’s role at Wellington College has been designed to drive forward the momentum of Wellington’s wellbeing provision as the College builds the right support structures to help current and future pupils. She has oversight of all pupils who are struggling with their mental health and will ensure they receive the right care at the right time. This might be via Wellington’s expanding team of highly trained school counsellors or through external support. \n\nLauren Fisher\, Head of Boarding\, Wellington College Prep \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nJess Goves\, Deputy Head Safeguarding (DSL)\, Wellington College Prep \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\n \nDavid Walker\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB \nDavid is the BSA Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance\nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nEd Venables\, Head\, Wellington College Prep \nAfter studying Classics at Oxford university and a 12-year career in the investment banking and private equity world in the City\, Ed returned to his old school\, Wellington College\, to teach Economics and Business.  His time at Wellington saw him being Head of the Economics department\, Housemaster of his former boarding house for six years and\, finally\, Director of Admissions and a member of the Executive Leadership Team.  In September 2023 Ed moved to become Head of Eagle House School\, Wellington’s 3-13 prep school.  Ed remains on the Wellington ELT. \nEd is married and has three sons.  Away from school\, he lives in Anglesey\, North Wales\, and loves getting there in the holidays for lots of walking\, running and time in and on the sea! \n\n
