After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). This is where she is now and where her passion for independent school nursing started.

A bystander is someone who witnesses bullying but does not get involved. Being a bystander is easy – they aren’t the perpetrator and they are not the one outwardly being harmed or the target of the attack. \nIn every situation it’s necessary to have somebody who does something that prevents or reduces the bullying they see – an upstander. Upstanders are people who comes to the aid of another person who is being bullied and shows them kindness. \nMoving from being a bystander to becoming an upstander will not happen overnight. Commissioned regularly since 2000 to deliver training and consultancy to police forces across the UK and consult on LGBT+ matters for schools by the Crown Prosecution Service\, Jonathan has also been commissioned multiple times by the Department for Education to generate guidance and create training for schools nationally. His training and consultancy work has been commissioned by the USA\, Finland\, Sweden and across the UK whilst his books on challenging homophobic and biphobic bullying have sold throughout the world. Jonathan was awarded a MBE in the King’s New Year’s Honours 2025 for his services to Education\, the Criminal Justice System\, Health and HM Government.

The work has taken her into some of the most socially deprived areas of London and New York where she has facilitated peaceful solutions for everything from hostile parents and teenagers\, pupils excluded from school and separated parents at loggerheads to neighbours at war\, street gang rivalries\, and threats to life\, business deals gone wrong\, boardroom disputes and workplace conflicts.Maria believes that the best way forward is to share the skills and empower people to resolve conflict without reliance on experts. So she trains violent prisoners to be DRM Facilitators\, challenging teenagers to be peer mediators and troubled neighbours to be tenant listeners.\nThe DRM empowers participants to be heard in ways which are more likely to be valued. The DRM has applications in families\, schools\, healthcare\, prisons\, workplaces\, neighbourhoods and organisations. It is used for resolving conflict\, repairing harm\, decision making and healing at an individual and group level. It challenges people to live in harmony with their values.\nThe Dialogue Road Map also works at when applied to leadership and governance. Using the DRM for collaborative decision making\, problem solving and conflict resolution transforms communities into a ground up\, peer led system of organization which shares power in order to reduce pressure on leaders\, and increase responsibility taking by all members of the community.\nMaria has authored two books\, The Heart of Mindful Relationships and Mindfulness at Work and\, in 2020 she received an MBE for Services to Mediation.

The course sessions will broadly cover the following areas: \n\nOrganisation and communication in a boarding school; outcomes for boarders; adolescent development; eSafety issues and challenges\nMajor legislation as it affects life in a boarding school; safeguarding issues; National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools; The Boarding Team; working with parents\nLegal awareness; leadership and management; pupil induction\nConflict resolution; counselling skills; structures for managing crises and stress in boarding schools;\nEmotional and mental health issues; bereavement\, loss and divorce\nNursing Issues and physical matters; relationships;\nA consideration of some of the challenges that young people face as they develop.\n\nHow will this course help me to develop personally and professionally? \n● Be able to evaluate and have a clear appreciation of the personal and professional needs and skills involved in your boarding role; \n● Develop greater knowledge and understanding of the issues covered in the syllabus; \n● Develop\, through support and guidance\, the range of personal strategies you use to resolve relevant welfare concerns for your pupils; \n● Develop your ability to reflect critically on your work and evaluate the need for change or action; \n● Develop your study and planning skills and your ability to analyse reading and reference material; \n● Be able to communicate and defend your views and opinions orally and in writing; \nIn addition\, at graduate level\, successful completion of the course will enable you to: \n● Develop a clear vision of the school’s management strategies for providing good pastoral care; \n● Develop your study and time management skills and your ability to analyse reading and a wide range of reference sources; \nHow is the course organised? \nThe course is organised around a combination of intensive study days which contain a variety of teaching methods and opportunities to learn in different ways; short lectures\, presentations and discussions led by students\, together with group problem solving exercises and case studies. Group discussion is a particularly important aspect of this module\, enabling you to look at the theory in the light of your own practical experience. Katharine spent 15 years working for a large local authority Psychology Service before becoming Head of Learning Support at Caterham Prep School. Her Doctoral research at UCL examined the impact of mindset on the literacy attainments of Key Stage 3 pupils. Katharine maintains a private psychology practice alongside her teaching role. She is the IAPS SEND Subject Advisor and sits on the ISC Cross-Association SEND Advisory Group.

His broad remit offers a range of services to boarding schools worldwide. He has considerable experience working with boarding school staff all around the world and lived and worked in boarding schools for much of his life. \nAndrew has set up his own company in 2020\, Project 1000 Ltd\, that focuses on educational consultancy and resilience coaching. He is a WRAW Master Practitioner\, trained by the Wellbeing Project\, and offers life coaching\, diagnostic assessments\, workshops and seminars. He is also Education Development Director for Performance Learning\, an NSPCC Associate and an IAPS Consultant\, as well as a Director of Wiltshire & Swindon Sport and Team Removals. \n\nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL.
