His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

To cater to the needs of our students\, pastorally and academically\, we need to ensure we recognise and understand cultural variations. For further details on BAISIS\, please click here\, or feel free to arrange a call with our Director\, Bethan Hudson\, by emailing us at baisis@boarding.org.uk. \n\nSpeaker: \nHazel Lim\, Founder and Director of Chinese Autism Community Interest Company est. 2022 \nMultiple autism award winner Hazel Lim is a prominent advocate in the fight against the cultural stigma associated with autism within the UK Chinese community.  After moving with her neurodivergent family to Swansea in 2015 to complete a master’s degree in Autism and Related Conditions\, she decided to make Wales her permanent home.  Since then\, she has increasingly become a leading figure in the local autism and Chinese communities there\, bringing together the voices and experiences of many to create a more inclusive and compassionate environment. \nHazel founded the Chinese Autism Support Group in 2016 to provide much needed support to Chinese families\, working tirelessly to raise awareness and understanding of autism particularly for those in caring roles.  Then in 2019\, Hazel went on to produce the first English and Chinese Bilingual Autism booklet in the UK\, providing professionals with an introductory understanding of the cultural barriers faced by people living with autism in the Chinese community.  This document has been greatly utilised and appreciated by many professional bodies in South Wales\, as well as internationally.  Hazel’s work on both this invaluable resource and the support group she founded was recognised by the Prime Minister in 2021\, who awarded her with a prestigious ‘Point of Light’ award. \nFrom winning additional awards such as ‘UK Chinese Women of the Year’ in the volunteering category\, The National Autistic Society’s ‘Someone Who Changed My Life’ Award\, and both Womenspire’s ‘Community Champion Award’ and Womenspire ‘Champion of Champions Award’\, it is more than evident that Hazel’s impact and dedication is now widely recognised\, especially her unwavering warmth and impressive commitment to her cause. \nHazel’s work has often been greatly challenged by cultural barriers\, the unwillingness to embrace differences\, and the lack of funding available to meet the needs of such vulnerable people. Despite this\, Hazel’s genuine desire to help others and her determination to ensure no child or family affected by autism suffers in silence has made a significant impact on the local autism community\, and those trying to understand autism in the Chinese cultural context both in Wales and all over the world. \nTo further support minority families affected by autism\, Hazel founded Chinese Autism CIC in 2022\, a project which is dedicated to empowering all Chinese families in need across the UK.  CACIC endeavours to counter the misinformed perspectives and cultural stigma that uniquely exists within the Chinese community through providing guidance\, information\, education\, and awareness campaigns\, strongly focusing on leading by example to remove barriers\, address prejudice\, and foster inclusion and equality.

Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.

She was Assistant Boarding Housemistress at Wellington College before taking over her own mixed\, sixth form boarding house at LVS Ascot in 2014. She and her husband Tom have both worked closely with BSA\, and she has enjoyed writing some of their briefing papers\, delivering seminars and writing magazine articles\, including recently about the importance of sleep for teenagers. In 2019 the family moved to Malaysia where Rebecca took over a senior girls boarding house at Marlborough College just as the pandemic struck! She continues in her role as Housemistress and since August 2023 has been Head of Boarding.  \n\n\n \nRebecca represented Cambridge at lacrosse and hockey\, and has coached school hockey\, netball and athletics as well as running a variety of activities including a dissection club and teaching biology. She has completed several marathons\, climbed Kilimanjaro and loves travelling\, with a particular passion for Africa. She and Tom have three children and since moving to Malaysia the family have enjoyed extensive travels in South East Asia. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \nCatherine Stoker\, Founder and Education Consultant\, The Independent Education Consultants \n\n\n \n  \n\n\n \n  \n\n\n \n  \n\n\n \n\n\n\n \nTracey Tweddell\, Head of Boarding\, Bromsgrove International School\, Bangkok Thailand \nHaving completed her PGCE\, Tracey started her teaching career at Oxford College of Further Education as a lecturer in Biology and Environmental Science. Her journey in Boarding then began with a move to Kingham Hill School\, Oxfordshire where Tracey took a position as Houseparent in a Senior Girls boarding house. Tracey’s next move took her to Bromsgrove School UK as a Senior Houseparent before moving to her current role as Head of Boarding at Bromsgrove International School Thailand. She is very passionate about boarding and pastoral care and enjoys engaging with children both inside and outside of the classroom environment. Tracey has been privileged to care for children from all over the globe and gained valuable experience in different contexts and cultures. All three boarding schools have had very different cohorts of students providing different challenges to overcome. Married with four grown up children and one grandchild\, in her spare time Tracey enjoys travelling around Asia\, experiencing the breathtaking scenery and outstanding hospitality on offer. She am also an avid scuba diver and love the ocean. \n\nSu Hayter\, Global Development Manager\, IDP \nSu has worked in international education for over 20 years\, having lived and worked in Europe and Asia.  She has been involved in student placement for both university and boarding schools\, therefore has a deep understanding of what international families require for their child’s schooling choices\, and beyond.  \nSu works for IDP as Global Development Manager for Boarding Schools.  With nearly 200 student placement offices from 35 source countries\, recruiting for 6 destination countries\, IDP’s focus is  primarily on Higher Education with specialised boarding counsellors in a growing number of markets.  Su is able to access on the ground feedback from many different markets in our ever-changing world where it is essential to keep ahead of individual market changes and the impacts they may have on families. \nAs a mother\, she understands the complex decisions parents face\, in particular the cultural\, financial and academic challenges involved in finding a school where their child will be happy and thrive.

Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n  \n\nDavid Woodgate\, CEO\, ISBA \nDavid Woodgate was appointed Chief Executive of the Independent Schools Bursars’ Association in May 2016.  Prior to this he was Chief Executive of the Institute of Financial Accountants from 2007 to 2015 after which he spent a year as the Strategy Consultant to the Institute of Public Accountants in Australia. \nDavid qualified as a Barrister in 1982 following a first degree in Languages (French and Russian)\, Law and Linguistics.  He moved from the law into the City\, holding several senior management and executive positions in the National Westminster Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland – in Strategic Planning\, Corporate Finance and latterly as Director of e-Commerce for the corporate bank. He ran an outsourcing business and a specialist internal consultancy providing market intelligence and competitor analysis. \nHe completed an MBA at Warwick University Business School in 1992 with distinction.  A former Chief Executive of the Institute of Administrative Management\, he also holds a postgraduate diploma in Charity Management from the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators and South Bank University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts\, a Chartered Banker\, a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Wheelwrights. David is also a former Chairman of Governors of an HMC Independent school and is currently a Governor of the City of London School. \n\nAileen Kane\, Deputy CEO & COO\, BSA \nAileen is Deputy CEO & COO of BSA Group. She leads operations at BSA Group and works closely with members to provide guidance and training. Aileen also works with government departments\, local authorities and other agencies to support members and heads up the group’s work to find places for refugee children escaping from conflict countries. \n  \n  \n\nCarolyn Reed\, Reed Brand Communication \nCarolyn has a design and marketing background in FMCG and retail/service brands.
