Young people are growing up in a world in which they are very likely to encounter and experiment with vaping along with use of other substances. They need to know the facts about what they might encounter\, what the dangers are\, what the myths are and how to access advice and support for their vaping use. This seminar is designed to improve the knowledge of those who are teaching\, and supporting\, young people to navigate through these issues. Attendees will receive a full update on current facts and figures surrounding vaping concerns along with information on current Government strategies to combat the sale and promotion of these devices\, in particular to teenagers. Since leaving the police Dave over the last 17 years has delivered hundreds of Drug Awareness Sessions to Schools and Colleges all over the country engaging with all parties (Students/Staff and Parental Sessions) to ensure his key message about raising the awareness of the real risks and dangers associated with many substances young people in particular are likely to come into contact with. He does not preach and delivers his presentations in a ‘non judgemental manner’ in his own ‘unique style’\, ensuring that his audiences engage with him from the very minute he starts to speak. He also has strong links with NAMSS (National Association for Managers of Student Services) and for the BSA (Boarding School Association) delivering bespoke Drug Awareness Training events for their staff (including work overseas with international schools).

Throughout her police service Cath has been involved in the policing areas of safeguarding and public protection working across a wide range of diverse and vulnerable groups to challenge crime and promote safeguarding.  Her current role is to drive the external and internal implementation of the Commission’s safeguarding strategy and to develop the Commission’s operational safeguarding capabilities through the provision of guidance and advice on policy and operational casework. She intends to develop new and existing relationships with external partners in order to raise awareness of the role of the Commission and to have an impact on how safeguarding issues across the charity sector are approached and managed.

Katharine spent 15 years working for a large local authority Psychology Service before becoming Head of Learning Support at Caterham Prep School. Her Doctoral research at UCL examined the impact of mindset on the literacy attainments of Key Stage 3 pupils. Katharine maintains a private psychology practice alongside her teaching role. She is the IAPS SEND Subject Advisor and sits on the ISC Cross-Association SEND Advisory Group.

Her role also included insulin pumps starts\, and she held nurse-led clinics\, which aimed to provide extra support and motivation for young people struggling to manage their diabetes. Kirsty was actively involved in educating others to support children and YP with Diabetes\, for example providing training days for nurses and other staff in schools. Kirsty’s Masters’ Dissertation Research Project looked into best ways of educating school staff around Diabetes. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors. \n

Outside of this\, he is Chair of Governors at a special school in the state sector\, and a team manager for the Surrey Schools’ Athletics Team. After her general training Brenda specialised in children’s nursing\, and over the years has worked with adults and children\, in London and Cardiff in both hospital and community settings. Since 2002 she has focussed on paediatric continence\, working as Paediatric Specialist Continence Nurse at the University Hospital of Wales until summer 2018. \nBrenda currently works two days a week as ERIC Nurse\, the first person to take on this role\, originally funded by the Department of Health. She works a further day a week as Paediatric Continence Nurse for Shine: Spina Bifida\, Hydrocephalus Information\, Networking and Equality. \nThe ERIC Nurse post was created to seek ways to improve early intervention into childhood continence problems. Brenda strives to increase awareness of children’s bladder and bowel health\, by designing easy-to-understand information for parents and providing training for health care professionals and early year’s workers. She has produced a generic Children’s Continence Pathway\, which ERIC is promoting as a model of best practice. The ERIC Nurse project won a prestigious Nursing Times Award in 2016\, and has stimulated articles in the nursing press. Brenda has re-written many of the ERIC leaflets\, and is enjoying working at the heart of the charity she supports. \nWhen she is not busy with her regular jobs\, Brenda is much in demand as a freelance trainer and speaker. In her rare moments of spare time she enjoys the company of her three children and her husband John\, a musician and music therapist.

After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. He studied at the University of Aberdeen\, before moving to St Edmund Hall\, Oxford\, where he became Junior Dean of College. He began his teaching career at Shiplake College in Henley-on-Thames\, where he was Head of the History Department\, Resident Tutor and Master I/C of Rowing. He then headed back to Oxford in 1999\, to become Head of History at St Edward’s School and then a Housemaster. While there\, he continued with his rugby refereeing\, coaching U16s rugby and U15s rowing\, and ran the naval section of the CCF. \nIn 2007\, Mark was appointed Deputy Headmaster and Head of Boarding at Felsted School in Essex\, where he maintained his coaching and teaching roles. It was from there\, in 2010\, that he headed north\, to take on the role of Headmaster at Ashville College in Harrogate\, an HMC co-educational day and boarding school with 870 pupils. He has been an ISI team inspector\, a school governor and Chair of the Boarding School’s Association and is now in his seventh year as Headmaster of Strathallan School. \nMark is married to music teacher Caroline\, and has two sons\, both now at university. In his spare time\, he enjoys wild camping in the Scottish islands and walking in the hills.

Dan has recently completed the BSA Diploma in Boarding Leadership. He is also responsible for Health and Safety within the school setting as well as having responsibility for whole school policies and risk assessments.
