She originally trained as a Mental Health Nurse in 1990 and subsequently worked in inpatient and community settings with adults\, children\, young people and their families. She completed a Masters in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and a post graduate diploma in Evidence Based Practice leading to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England.

After a brief\, unspectacular spell as a professional cricketer with Gloucestershire County Cricket Club\, he taught mathematics at Framlingham College where he was also Master in Charge of Cricket\, Housemaster and Director of Studies. \nIn 1984 he moved to be Deputy Head\, Bristol Cathedral School\, now an academy but then an independent day school which educated the Cathedral Choristers. In 1989 he became Principal\, King William’s College\, Isle of Man and from 1996 to 2009 was Master of Haileybury. Haileybury became a fully co-educational school in 1998\, having admitted girls to its Sixth Form in 1973. The International Baccalaureate Diploma has been taught alongside A Level at Haileybury since1999. \nIn 2009 Stuart became General Secretary of the Association of Governors of Independent Schools (AGBIS) whose purpose was\, and is\, to provide advice\, support and training for the Governors of its 800 or so member schools. He retired from that post in August 2016 and continues to undertake consultancy work for independent schools in Britain\, some commissioned separately and some on behalf of AGBIS. \nStuart has been a governor of twelve schools. He was recently Chair of Governors of a girls’ all through school and is currently a governor of an academy and of one other independent\, co-educational senior school. \n

DESCRIPTION:Date: February 06\, 2025\nTime: 09:30 – 11:30\nCost: BSA Full Member – £135\, BSA Affiliate Member – £170 \, Non-member – £270\nAudience: Head\, SLT\, Inclusion Lead\, Head of Boarding\, Teaching and Boarding staff\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – Half-Day Seminar\n\n\nCourse outline: \nThe aim of this half day seminar is to provide an opportunity to learn more about the importance of the management system of the brain – known as executive functioning skills and to consider strategies that can be used to support pupils.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe three main areas of working memory\, cognitive flexibility (flexible thinking) and inhibitory control (including self-control) will be unpacked. When people struggle with executive function\, it impacts them at home\, in school\, and in life because the skills involved support goal setting\, planning\, and completing tasks. \nExecutive function is responsible for many skills including: paying attention; organizing\, planning\, and prioritising; starting tasks and staying focused on them to completion; understanding different points of view; regulating emotions and self-monitoring. Executive functioning skills usually develop quickly in early childhood and into the teen years but are still developing into the mid-20s. Some people struggle with EF\, and this can cause challenges during childhood\, as a teenager and young adult. \nWe will hear from an EF expert about what executive function skills are and how they impact our lives. We will also hear directly from school staff about adjustments and proactive work that has made a positive impact in their settings. \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAttending this half day seminar will help delegates increase their knowledge and understanding of the importance of supporting executive functioning for all pupils\, but particularly for those who have weaker EF function. Delegates will hear about a range of practical strategies\, to adopt\, adapt or use and will leave with the understanding and confidence to build on current practice. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nDr Katharine Sharpe \nKatharine is a Chartered Educational Psychologist and experienced teacher who works in a Prep School as Assistant Head (Pastoral) and Head of Learning Support. After graduating with a Psychology degree\, she started her career as a primary teacher before completing post-graduate training to qualify as an Educational Psychologist. Katharine spent 15 years working for a large local authority Psychology Service before becoming Head of Learning Support at Caterham Prep School. Her Doctoral research at UCL examined the impact of mindset on the literacy attainments of Key Stage 3 pupils. Katharine maintains a private psychology practice alongside her teaching role. She is the IAPS SEND Subject Advisor and sits on the ISC Cross-Association SEND Advisory Group.

Recent issues highlighted nationally\, such as mental health\, alternative medicines and the role of SEN\, will also be considered. Delegates will be able to better understand the needs of international boarders and help schools to develop their provision and support to best effect. Delegates will leave with a set of tools to help their international boarders. This will be based on an improved understanding of what it feels like to be an international student thousands of miles from home. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nPresent ‘issues’ (and their solutions) and best practice recommendations around supporting international boarders\nConsidering what it means to be an international student in the UK\, including interactive challenges to experience some of the obstacles international students face\nCulture shock\, cultural differences and exploring ways to embrace a rich mixture of cultures and traditions\nInduction and integration\nWhy international boarders can benefit the whole school population.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nIncreased awareness and understanding of what it means to be an international student in the UK\, and the challenges they could face daily\nBest practice recommendations for induction\, integration and providing ongoing support\nIncreased confidence in understanding and supporting international students in boarding and addressing their specific needs.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeakers: \nLauren Moors \nThroughout her career\, Lauren has held a number of roles ranging from Housemistress\, Director of Sport and Strategy Ambassador\, before switching over to become Assistant Principal (Academic) at DLD College\, London. Here\, she specialises in culturally mapping the environment and student wellbeing to make a cohesive\, impactful education for all the students and wider community. \nAside from her role as Assistant Principal\, Lauren is a Mental Health First Aid Instructor and teaches Business and Economics. Away from academic commitments\, Lauren is a keen advocate of DLD’s ‘Crypto-Club’\, using her previous business experience to encourage young entrepreneurs for the future. \nAway from DLD\, Lauren separates her time between writing and health hacking. She currently writes for several local businesses\, producing copy for technology\, candles or reflexology firms. If she isn’t cycling in the Surrey hills\, then she is open water swimming down on Branksome Beach. A self-confessed health addict\, at the weekends Lauren can be found on the golf course\, tennis court\, enjoying cryotherapy\, or scouting the latest health technology gadget. She is also a Governor for Greenfield School\, Woking and has worked with several hockey clubs in the local area to produce some of our current national players. \nGareth Evans \nGareth joined DLD College London in August 2016 as Director of Studies before being promoted to Assistant Principal (Upper School) and latterly Vice Principal (Pastoral). He joined us from Strode’s College where he was Head of the Creative Arts Faculty since 2009. \nAside from his role as Assistant Principal\, Gareth currently teaches Film. He has also taught Media A Level and Film Studies GCSE. Gareth is an examiner and moderator for EDUQAS. Beyond these academic commitments\, Gareth is involved in several CCA’s at DLD College including Community Projects\, Run Club and the Film Society. \nIn his free time Gareth is an avid ‘very’ amateur surfer and enjoys spending time on the beach. Gareth is a keen member of the community where he lives and was elected as District Councillor for Loxwood Ward (Chichester) in May 2019 and again in May 2023. He is also an award-winning community volunteer and was awarded a Community Builder Award by the Mayor of Newham which recognised his contribution to the local community he once lived in and continues to support. He has been involved in setting up a history society\, running an oral history project in collaboration with ‘Discovering Stratford Village’\, organising inter-generational disco parties\, running children’s events at the local library and has been a co-presenter of East End Mystery Show on East London Radio. \nGareth recently completed his MEd in Senior Leadership and Management at Buckingham University but also holds a PGCE from Oxford Brooks\, a MA in Human Resource Management from London Metropolitan University and a BA Hons (2:1) in Media and Communication Studies.

They should do this ‘to identify and manage the risk to pupils’ wellbeing of pupils experiencing harmful behaviours and attitudes…[and] ensure they appreciate and understand the prevalence of potentially harmful behaviours. Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis. \nDavid Walker\, Director\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB  \nDavid is the BSA Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. He has over 20 years’ experience in boarding schools and has worked in a range of schools in the UK and Africa\, alongside being a prep school governor and a trustee of a MAT. Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East.

This virtual day seminar is aimed both at those who are familiar with the process and those completely new to it. The day focuses on the process itself\, preparation for forthcoming inspection visits\, and relevant updates on new legislation that could impact an inspection result. \nThroughout the session\, information and actions will refer to the National Minimum Standards 2022\, as well as referencing appropriate updates to other guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024. \nThere will be specific breakout sessions during the day to focus on ISI or Ofsted as appropriate. This seminar will give delegates the opportunity to review\, consider and plan the development of a culture of wellbeing across their whole school.  \nAfter events surrounding COVID-19\, people are more conscious of pressures of work and home life\, and a need to be proactively working to develop a safer\, healthier\, and happier culture for everyone\, and this includes an awareness of wellbeing and mental health risks. Boarding is a fantastic environment to both live and work in\, but it also comes with its own demands both physical and emotional. These can impact students and staff\, and the wellbeing of both directly corresponds to each other. As a school\, a commitment to putting wellbeing at the centre of strategy and decision making offers a strong framework for success for everyone involved; students and staff alike.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nWhat is wellbeing? His broad remit offers a range of services to boarding schools worldwide. He has considerable experience working with boarding school staff all around the world and lived and worked in boarding schools for much of his life. \nAndrew has set up his own company in 2020\, Project 1000 Ltd\, that focuses on educational consultancy and resilience coaching. He is a WRAW Master Practitioner\, trained by the Wellbeing Project\, and offers life coaching\, diagnostic assessments\, workshops and seminars. He is also Education Development Director for Performance Learning\, an NSPCC Associate and an IAPS Consultant\, as well as a Director of Wiltshire & Swindon Sport and Team Removals.

After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

This role involves working with senior leaders to discuss EDI strategic decisions and policy\, working with both Teaching and Professional Services staff to foster a more inclusive community\, and working with the pupil led Voices4Change group. Our Caterham Voice4Change group actively promotes diversity and inclusion across all aspects of school\, organising awareness raising events\, driving positive reflection and actioning change\, creating celebratory resources\, as well as leading assemblies. \n\nEd Boulter-Comer\, Houseparent\, Fettes College \nEd Started teaching in the Independent Sector in 2002. The State Sector could not employ him at that point as he was gay\, very much out of the closet\, and Section 28 still forbade the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality. Being a teacher well before sexual orientation became a protected characteristic in 2010\, he has forged a career of ‘firsts’ in the schools he has worked in. First out teacher. First out teacher in a boarding House. First teacher to get a civil partnership. First teacher to have adoption leave. First gay Houseparent. Going first can be a leap of faith for individuals and institutions and Ed will share some of the ways in which he has brought people along with him over the past two decades. \nEd is the Houseparent of a Senior Boy’s House at Fettes College in Edinburgh. He\, his husband\, and their two children live alongside 60 students\, not all of whom are boys. \n\nM Jolly\, Director of Wellbeing and Inclusion\, Charterhouse School \nM Jolly is the director of wellbeing and inclusion and senior leader at Charter House school. She is also a qualified therapist and clinical Supervisor. She has worked in schools with young people for over ten years and is creating real change within her school. M Jolly\, harnesses student voice to bring awareness to the school community and beyond about important issues. The EDI vision between 2021-2023 has placed emphasis on allyship and anti-discrimination\, culminating in pupil-led Charters for Anti-Racism\, Anti-Sexism\, LGBTQ+ and Anti-Bullying. He is a member of UKCIS (UK Council for Internet Safety) and sits on the UKCIS evidence group\, education working group and the early warning group as well as on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre. He also sits on the Roblox trust and safety board where he represents the Insafe network. He was recently part of an expert steering group with TikTok looking at harmful and dangerous online challenges. \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. \nAs an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents\, teachers and governors to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 16 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has recently worked with a team developing a national online safety strategy in Rwanda and chaired the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance.

She is a trustee at a leading independent boarding school. \n  \n\n\n\nVirginia Parkes\, Director of Learning and Professional Development\, AGBIS \nVirginia (Ginny) Parkes commenced her career in education 20 years ago\, when she initially taught ICT and business studies up to\, and including\, A Level.  After several years in teaching\, Ginny moved into a consultancy based role before joining the Department for Education\, initially as Head of Digital Engagement for the Training and Development Agency (TDA) before moving on as a Senior Communications Advisor for the DfE.  Following the birth of her two daughters\, Ginny took up the role of Education Strategy Director for an educational trust in Greater Manchester\, before eventually taking up her previous role as Director of Finance & Operations (Bursar) at Beech Hall School in Cheshire.  Ginny is an experienced governance professional\, having sat as a governor for several schools throughout her career\, as well as holding the position of Director of Governance for a large complex FE college group in South Yorkshire.  Ginny is now a Trustee of the Sir John Brunner Foundation in Cheshire.  In addition to being a qualified teacher\, Ginny also holds a first degree in Business Management and a MSc. in Technology Enhanced Learning\, Innovation & Change. Ginny’s role within AGBIS draws on her experience as a teacher\, governance professional and independent school bursar enabling her to support member schools’ governing bodies.

This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to boarding. The sooner staff new to boarding have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties\, feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges. \nThis seminar will cover the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and meeting boarders’ needs. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. In advance of the seminar\, it is recommended that delegates familiarise themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the boarding section of their school’s website and boarding promotional material. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nSafeguarding and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding in England – this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools\nMeeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding\, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by the pastoral team\nUnderstanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school\nWorking safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy\, safe and enjoying your role in boarding!\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding\, and their role within that\nAn increased confidence to be able to support the young people in your care\nIncreased awareness of the legal context\, safeguarding and National Minimum Standards for Boarding in England.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

For those inspected by ISI\, there will be a particular focus on the detail of the current framework \nCurrent trends and concerns in safeguarding\nA review of current issues leading to non-compliance \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nIncreased understanding of relevant legislative and guidance updates\nRecommendations of how to ensure new guidance has been embedded into both policy and practice\nEnsuring compliance matters are fully reflected in current procedures\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board.
