This seminar aims to help prospective houseparents get ahead of the game and make the first few weeks in post less stressful and more productive. \nBoarding students need continuity of care and a consistent approach to school processes. Schools need boarding staff who are happy and will stay in post. A positive start for a houseparent encourages long service and gives confidence to students and parents. \nThis seminar will explore the many factors and issues associated with taking on a new boarding house. Promotion to houseparent and additional responsibility for running a house is exciting\, but it can also be stressful. The training day will provide an opportunity for delegates to think about the ethos for their new house\, review and consider key issues for students\, staff\, policies and procedures and the demands of managing the physical building. This virtual day seminar is aimed both at those who are familiar with the process and those completely new to it. The day focuses on the process itself\, preparation for forthcoming inspection visits\, and relevant updates on new legislation that could impact an inspection result. \nThroughout the session\, information and actions will refer to the National Minimum Standards 2022\, as well as referencing appropriate updates to other guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education 2025. \nThere will be specific breakout sessions during the day to focus on ISI or Ofsted as appropriate. Reference will therefore be made to either the ISI Framework and inspection process\, including Framework 23\, or the Ofsted SCCIF (Social Care Common Inspection Framework).  This training aims to be relevant and valuable regardless of where schools are in the inspection cycle. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nUpdates to current guidance – including KCSIE 2025 and the National Minimum Standards 2022\nPreparing for inspection – gathering evidence relating to the ISI or Ofsted inspection framework\nGoing beyond the minimum standard – securing the best outcomes for pupils\, actions that go beyond the minimum standards\nEmbedding a regular audit procedure – looking at the process of review and reflection and establishing a long-term process beyond the inspection cycle.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nRecommendations of how to prepare for an inspection\nIncreased understanding of relevant legislative and guidance updates\nRecommendations for conducting a regular audit procedure.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker:  \nDale Wilkins FTIOB\, Executive Director\, BSA Group Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA in 2017 to lead safeguarding\, inspection\, and compliance across the UK\, building on his experience as a course tutor since 1998. He works closely with ISI\, Ofsted\, and the DfE\, while also overseeing the Group’s work in Scotland and Wales. A trainer and consultant for BSA and SACPA\, he is Vice Chair of SAFCAB. Dale previously spent 31 years as a boarding practitioner\, including roles as Housemaster and Deputy Head at Old Swinford Hospital. Beyond education\, he trains for the Methodist Church\, is a charity trustee\, chairs a performing arts organisation\, and volunteers widely. \n  \n\nSue Duff \nFollowing a successful career in commerce\, culminating in a senior position in a world leading market research organisation\, Sue made the transition to teaching in the independent sector. Having worked in prep\, GSA and HMC environments\, she has a breadth of experience across the independent schools sector. Sue has always focussed on boarding in her teaching career having set up two houses from scratch as well as running boarding teams. Before the leap to self employment\, she was on the Senior Leadership Team at one of the country’s premier HMC boarding schools\, having led the integration of the school into a fully co-educational environment and held various management positions. Sue now works with schools\, both in the UK and worldwide\, as an inspector and consultant predominantly looking at boarding\, pastoral and academic systems\, helping to improve the outcomes that pupils experience. She also works on whole school compliance projects. Sue has worked with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) since 2011 and is a Lead/Reporting Inspector\, also inspecting for AEGIS and COBIS. She has been working with the BSA undertaking consultancy and training for almost 20 years. Sue is vice-chair of Governors at a large HMC co-ed school in Worcestershire.

Tina has appeared on Lorraine\, Channel 5\, ITV\, STV\, BBC as well as Jeremy Vine\, Radio 1 and other national and international media outlets. \nTina grew up in Dundee and spoke of her life being perfect – or so she thought. “I can tell you exactly the day it all went wrong – the day my mum attacked my dad with a kitchen knife. In those few\, short seconds\, a black hole opened up in my life and I fell right in.” Tina’s world turned upside down. Tina turned to the one thing she thought she could control – food and from this moment\, began the biggest fight of her life. \nTina openly shares her life-or-death struggle with anorexia and the darkest moments she experienced in her life whilst in and out of psychiatric wards. Our speaker will take delegates further into the study of CBT practices and how we can use these to support young people in establishing resilience\, self-confidence and manage stress and negative feelings. \nThis one-day course is for delegates who have been using some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches in their work. This course will be an opportunity to develop and extend the skills of delegates who have started to apply some CBT tools in their work. The session will be bespoke and designed to build on the skills delegates are already using\, and introduce new tools to utilise. Delegates will leave the session with new skills and tools to extend their work and skills when working with individuals\, small groups and whole classes/houses. Delegates will also have the opportunity to raise specific areas where they would like to develop their skills which will be addressed e.g.\, wanting to use CBT tools with a wider range of young people\, to address different needs e.g.\, exam anxiety\, perfectionism\, peer relationships\, self-esteem\, social media use. \nWho is this course for? \n\nDelegates who have previously attended: CBT introduction – tools and strategies\nDelegates who are already using some aspects of CBT in their work. DESCRIPTION:🏷️ From £135\n🎧 Senior Leaders\, EDI leads\, SENCOs\, all staff with an interest in inclusion\n📍 Online\n🎥 Watch live or catch up\n\n\n\nCourse Outline: \nThe aim of this half day seminar is to provide an opportunity to learn more about the importance of the management system of the brain – known as executive functioning skills and to consider strategies that can be used to support pupils.  \nTraining Topics Include: \n\nThe three main areas of working memory\, cognitive flexibility (flexible thinking) and inhibitory control (including self-control) will be unpacked. When people struggle with executive function\, it impacts them at home\, in school\, and in life because the skills involved support goal setting\, planning\, and completing tasks. \nExecutive function is responsible for many skills including: paying attention; organizing\, planning\, and prioritising; starting tasks and staying focused on them to completion; understanding different points of view; regulating emotions and self-monitoring. Executive functioning skills usually develop quickly in early childhood and into the teen years but are still developing into the mid-20s. Some people struggle with EF\, and this can cause challenges during childhood\, as a teenager and young adult. \nWe will hear from an EF expert about what executive function skills are and how they impact our lives. We will also hear directly from school staff about adjustments and proactive work that has made a positive impact in their settings. \n\nLearning Outcomes: \n\nAttending this half day seminar will help delegates increase their knowledge and understanding of the importance of supporting executive functioning for all pupils\, but particularly for those who have weaker EF function. We pride ourselves on having strong communities within our schools but this means we need to be considerate and conscientious in welcoming and inducting people. Suggestions and ideas will be shared to encourage delegates to review the induction processes for both new staff and new students. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe benefits of a strong induction programme\nInduction for new staff to the boarding community/house\nInduction for new boarders to the boarding community/house\nThe wider school induction.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn increased understanding of the importance of a successful induction for both students and staff\nTips and recommendations on what to include in your induction process for students\nTips and recommendations on what to include in your induction process for staff.\n\nBOOK NOW \nSpeaker: \nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.
