She originally trained as a Mental Health Nurse in 1990 and subsequently worked in inpatient and community settings with adults\, children\, young people and their families. She completed a Masters in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and a post graduate diploma in Evidence Based Practice leading to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England.

Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the day to day lives of all within the boarding house\, and community. \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. The last 14 years of his police service was in the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU). He is also qualified as the following: \n\nFamily Liaison Officer (FLO)\nDisaster Victim Identification Officer (DVI)\nSignificant Witness interviewer (Sig Wit)\nEnhanced Cognitive Witness Interviewer\nDomestic Abuse Officer\nPIP Level 2 investigator\nAchieving Best Evidence (ABE- VRI vulnerable and intimidated witness interviewer)\nSpecialist Child Abuse Investigative Development Programme (SCAIDP)\nJoint Investigator – Section 47 Children Act ‘89\n\nPhilip was also seconded to the Training Department for 2 years\, where he received qualifications in training and delivered all these subjects\, including Harmful Sexual Behaviours (HSB). \nPhilip is a qualified AIM3 Assessor of children displaying HSB. \nPhilip also quality assured the Home Office Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Service (HSBSS) where he oversaw and triaged all the requests for support and advised personally on all the complex cases. \nPhilip supports survivors and families who have been victim of all types of abuse\, including technology assisted child sexual abuse (TACSA) through his work as a consultant for the Marie Collins Foundation. \n

This seminar aims to help prospective Houseparents get ahead of the game and make the first few weeks in post less stressful and more productive for all concerned. \nBoarding students need continuity of care and a consistent approach to school processes. Schools need boarding staff who are happy and will stay in post for a good amount of time. A positive start for a Houseparent encourages longevity of service and gives confidence to students\, and their parents\, alike. \nThis seminar will explore the many factors and issues associated with taking on a new boarding house. Promotion to Houseparent and additional responsibility for running a house is exciting\, but it can also be stressful. The training day will provide an opportunity for delegates to think about the ethos for their new house\, review and consider key issues relating to students\, staff\, policies and procedures as well as the demands of managing the physical building itself. The day will finish by looking at the elusive work life balance and ways in which this can be achieved during a hectic life in a busy boarding school. \nIn advance of this session\, it would be helpful for delegates to have an overview of the schools’ policies and procedures\, and those of the boarding house they are moving into if they differ from the schools’. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

From recognising how children and young people grieve and the physiological impact of grief\, to supporting young children in coping with a return to ‘normal’ activities after suffering a loss\, this seminar will equip delegates with a clearer understanding of how to help. \nThe focus will be on the age range of 8-18 years\, but may go beyond these years to account for developmental variations. On average\, 1 in every 29 children will be bereaved of a parent or sibling – that’s one per class. \nWinston’s Wish was the UK’s first childhood bereavement charity\, and has been supporting bereaved children and young people for over 30 years\, providing emotional and practical bereavement support to children\, young people and those who care for them.

Dr Jody Walshe will take delegates further into the study of CBT practices and how we can use these to support young people in establishing resilience\, self-confidence and managing stress and negative feelings. \nThis half-day course is for delegates who have been using some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches in their work. This course will be an opportunity to develop and extend the skills of delegates who have started to apply some CBT tools in their work. The session will be bespoke and designed to build on the skills that delegates are already using\, and introduce new tools to utilise. \nDelegates will leave the session with new skills and tools to extend their work and skills when working with individuals\, small groups and whole classes/houses. Delegates will also have the opportunity to raise specific areas where they would like to develop their skills which will be addressed e.g.\, wanting to use CBT tools with a wider range of young people\, to address different needs e.g.\, exam anxiety\, perfectionism\, peer relationships\, self-esteem\, social media use. \nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nDr Jody Walshe\, Educational and Child Psychologist \nDr Jody Walshe is an Educational and Child Psychologist working in London borough. Jody completed her doctorate at the University of East London. She is also a Consultant Psychologist providing consultations for foster carers and supervising social workers. She is a registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council. \nBefore commencing her training\, Jody worked as a teacher\, learning support assistant and tutor with young people from 5-19. The focus of much of her work looked at anxiety and mental health issues in school settings. Her doctoral research explored the experiences\, perceptions and training needs of secondary school staff working with self-harm.

This training day will provide a domestic and international context to the boarding sector and consider the latest challenges facing the boarding sector as a whole\, as well as considering the day-to-day issues boarding staff are working through with the boarders in their care\, and with their boarding facilities. \nAttention will also be given to the role of the boarding and safeguarding Governor\, with specific reference to the latest guidance\, legislation and research. The responsibilities and duties of Governors are wide ranging\, but a sound knowledge of the framework for policy\, monitoring and scrutiny will enable effective and confident practice. Similarly\, a clear understanding of procedures and policies used by schools will help if Governors are called upon to act in difficult situations. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nSector overview including market strategy\, recruitment\, setting\, standards and provision\nOverview of the latest headlines for the boarding sector\nSafeguarding duty\nInspection updates to be aware of\nThe role of Governor\nGood governance.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nIncreased awareness of the latest trends\, issues and developments for the boarding sector\nIncreased understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and the role of Governors\nUpdated understanding of compliance with ISI\, or other inspectorates as appropriate\nIncreased understanding of what makes a good Governor and effective governance.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nRichard Harman\n \nRichard Harman was educated at The King’s School\, Worcester\, followed by Trinity College\, Cambridge\, where he read English.  Having spent two years working for an academic publisher\, he decided his real vocation was in teaching.  After five years at Marlborough College teaching English and Drama\, during which time he also completed his PGCE at Exeter University\, he spent 12 years at Eastbourne College.  Progressing from Head of English to Housemaster of a Sixth Form girls’ house to member of the Senior Management Team\, he then became Headmaster of Aldenham in September 2000 and thence to Uppingham in 2006. After a decade leading Uppingham and 32 years overall in teaching\, he embarked on a third career as Chief Executive of AGBIS. Richard is much enjoying the challenges at AGBIS\, having been Chairman of the Boarding Schools’ Association for 2011-12 and Chairman of HMC for 2014-15. \n

The benefits of having animals working with children has been increasingly understood and researched in recent years. We trained our Labrador to be a therapy dog and piloted a programme in a school we both worked at. The school was a residential school as well as day pupils with a range of special education and behavioural needs. \nThe outcome was sensational and the young people we worked with were seen to have huge benefits in their wellbeing and educational needs. \nThis led to us delivering the programme in various new schools and continuing to refine and develop animal assisted therapy specifically around dogs in schools\, to become the leading provider of Canine Assisted Therapy in the Uk. \nTo date  we have worked with over 300 schools across the country\, and currently service approximately 200 hours a week of Canine Assisted Interventions across the entire spectrum of educational establishments.

Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

The day focuses both on the process itself and preparation for forthcoming inspection visits\, as well as providing relevant updates on new legislation that could impact an inspection result.  \nThroughout the session\, information and actions will refer to the new National Minimum Standards 2022\, as well as referencing appropriate updates to other guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024. The session will also consider how well schools have embedded their responses to Everyone’s Invited and the Ofsted Review\, which remain a key focus for inspectors. Emerging issues from the new ISI Framework will also be explored.  \nThis training is relevant and valuable regardless of where schools are in the inspection cycle.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nUpdates to current guidance – including KCSIE 2024 and the National Minimum Standards \nPreparing for inspection – gathering evidence relating to the inspection framework \nGoing beyond the minimum standard – securing the best outcomes for pupils\, actions that go beyond the minimum standards \nEmbedding a regular audit procedure – looking at the process of review and reflection and establishing a long-term process beyond the inspection cycle. \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nRecommendations of how to prepare for an inspection \nIncreased understanding of relevant legislative and guidance updates \nRecommendations for conducting a regular audit procedure. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \n \nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nSue Duff \nFollowing a successful career in commerce\, culminating in a senior position in a world leading market research organisation\, Sue made the transition to teaching in the independent sector.  Having worked in prep\, GSA and HMC environments\, she has a breadth of experience across the independent schools sector. Sue has always focussed on boarding in her teaching career having set up two houses from scratch as well as running boarding teams. Before the leap to self employment\, she was on the Senior Leadership Team at one of the country’s premier HMC boarding schools\, having led the integration of the school into a fully co-educational environment and held various management positions.  Sue now works with schools\, both in the UK and worldwide\, as an inspector and consultant predominantly looking at boarding\, pastoral and academic systems\, helping to improve the outcomes that pupils experience.  She also works on whole school compliance projects.  Sue has worked with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) since 2011 and is a Lead/Reporting Inspector\, also inspecting for AEGIS and COBIS. She has been working with the BSA undertaking consultancy and training for almost 20 years. Sue is vice-chair of Governors at a large HMC co-ed school in Worcestershire.

Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the day to day lives of all within the boarding house\, and community.  \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n  \n  \nVirginia Parkes\, Director of Learning and Professional Development \nVirginia (Ginny) Parkes commenced her career in education 20 years ago\, when she initially taught ICT and business studies up to\, and including\, A Level.  After several years in teaching\, Ginny moved into a consultancy based role before joining the Department for Education\, initially as Head of Digital Engagement for the Training and Development Agency (TDA) before moving on as a Senior Communications Advisor for the DfE.  Following the birth of her two daughters\, Ginny took up the role of Education Strategy Director for an educational trust in Greater Manchester\, before eventually taking up her previous role as Director of Finance & Operations (Bursar) at Beech Hall School in Cheshire.  Ginny is an experienced governance professional\, having sat as a governor for several schools throughout her career\, as well as holding the position of Director of Governance for a large complex FE college group in South Yorkshire.  Ginny is now a Trustee of the Sir John Brunner Foundation in Cheshire.  In addition to being a qualified teacher\, Ginny also holds a first degree in Business Management and a MSc. in Technology Enhanced Learning\, Innovation & Change. SUMMARY:SACPA - Sextortion: lessons from the casefiles

The last 14 years of his police service was in the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU). Philip is a qualified AIM3 Assessor of children displaying HSB. Philip also quality assured the Home Office Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Service (HSBSS) where he oversaw and triaged all the requests for support and advised personally on all the complex cases. He is also qualified as the following: \n\nFamily Liaison Officer (FLO)\nDisaster Victim Identification Officer (DVI)\nSignificant Witness interviewer (Sig Wit)\nEnhanced Cognitive Witness Interviewer\nDomestic Abuse Officer\nPIP Level 2 investigator\nAchieving Best Evidence (ABE- VRI vulnerable and intimidated witness interviewer)\nSpecialist Child Abuse Investigative Development Programme (SCAIDP)\nJoint Investigator – Section 47 Children Act ‘89\n\nPhilip was also seconded to the Training Department for 2 years\, where he received qualifications in training and delivered all these subjects\, including Harmful Sexual Behaviours (HSB). Philip supports survivors and families who have been victim of all types of abuse\, including technology assisted child sexual abuse (TACSA) through his work as a consultant for the Marie Collins Foundation.

On relocating to Wiltshire she set up a physiotherapy service at Warminster School\, working alongside the medical and sports staff there to provide a high quality health and wellbeing provision. Melissa went on to take a post at Kingswood School\, Bath as the Health and Wellbeing Lead running the medical centre and managing a team of nurses and allied health professionals which she enjoyed very much. She left earlier this year to become a Consultant offering support to medical centres and strategic health advice to senior management teams within schools which she does alongside a clinical lead role within the NHS. Melissa is passionate about children’s health and wellbeing and the role we have within school to guide and support children and young people to be happy\, healthy and the best versions of themselves.

Jody completed her doctorate at the University of East London. She is also a Consultant Psychologist providing consultations for foster carers and supervising social workers. She is a registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council. Before commencing her training\, Jody worked as a teacher\, learning support assistant and tutor with young people from 5-19. The focus of much of her work looked at anxiety and mental health issues in school settings. Her doctoral research explored the experiences\, perceptions and training needs of secondary school staff working with self-harm.

Leadership at Bruton was described as ‘dynamic and visionary’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. \nWith over 30 years teaching experience\, supporting professional development has been a key passion in all Nicky’s leadership roles and from 2013 to 2019 Nicky was the GSA national Independent Schools Teacher Induction Panel representative\, which has oversight of the induction and development of newly qualified teachers. Nicky’s more recent work within the computer games\, security and recruitment industries continue this passion for ‘people development’ within the context of business strategy. \nNicky believes in the power of professional and personal development to create change. Nicky is committed to enabling leadership development and coaching for leaders\, in a wide variety of industries. Nicky wants to support individuals and organisations in their quest to develop people to maximise their potential and be their ‘best selves’. This seminar aims to help prospective Houseparents get ahead of the game and make the first few weeks in post less stressful and more productive for all concerned.  \nBoarding students need continuity of care and a consistent approach to school processes. Schools need boarding staff who are happy and will stay in post for a good amount of time. A positive start for a Houseparent encourages longevity of service and gives confidence to students\, and their parents\, alike.  \nThis seminar will explore the many factors and issues associated with taking on a new boarding house. Promotion to Houseparent and additional responsibility for running a house is exciting\, but it can also be stressful. The training day will provide an opportunity for delegates to think about the ethos for their new house\, review and consider key issues relating to students\, staff\, policies and procedures as well as the demands of managing the physical building itself. The day will finish by looking at the elusive work life balance and ways in which this can be achieved during a hectic life in a busy boarding school.  \nIn advance of this session\, it would be helpful for delegates to have an overview of the schools’ policies and procedures\, and those of the boarding house they are moving into if they differ from the schools’. Delegates are recommended to reflect in advance on what values they want particularly to promote to their boarders.  \nTraining topics will include:  \n\nThe ethos of your new boarding house - this session will explore how to develop an individual identity for your new boarding house that fits within the overall ethos of the school \nThe perfect house\, team and boarder - in this session the group will focus on ways to develop all aspects of a boarding house to achieve the best possible results for all concerned; students and house team \nManaging the team – in this session the group will look at ways to effectively manage the various stakeholders within and alongside a boarding house \nDeveloping a good work life balance - some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy\, safe and enjoying your new role of Houseparent! \n\nLearning outcomes:  \n\nTime to reflect on the ethos and character of your new house \nIdeas to strengthen the identity of your house and the community within it \nRecommendations on managing a small team \nRecommendations on developing a work/life balance that benefits you and the boarding community. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

For many schools\, recruiting internationally involves working with educational agents to support the promotion of their school overseas and to ensure that student and school community are paired successfully. Relationships with agents can vary. While BSA has launched their Certified Agent Scheme to assure the professional quality of agents to schools\, there are several ways in which schools themselves can improve their working relationships with agents. \nThis two-hour session will go through the process of finding\, building relationships and working with agents\, with best practice recommendations to support the development of strong relationships between school and agent. Graduating from the University of Leeds with a master’s degree in Finance\, he was employed by two FTSE 100 international companies as a procurement director before starting his own business. Since establishing Connexcel\, he has devoted himself to helping elite private schools in China and the UK form partnerships through sister schools and cultural exchanges. John has supported schools in China with setting up new curriculums in collaboration with UK partners and training senior education personnel. He also acts a consultant for UK schools seeking advice on expanding their brand within the China. Through his consultancy work\, John has built an extensive network within the Chinese Education Bureau along with schools in the UK and China\, always taking the needs of each school to best allocate resources to support them. \n\n \nNicky Sakpoba\, Founder and Managing Director\, Panoba (Africa and Middle East) \nNicky was educated at an independent girls’ day school in West London\, and continued on to study for her Bachelor’s degree in European Languages at Royal Holloway College\, University of London. \nNicky’s career started in the luxury hotel industry\, where she spent the initial 10 years of her career in management roles in a number of London’s most prestigious five-star hotels. She went on to spend the following 12 years of her career in senior marketing roles within the London commercial property sector. \nAs a mother of two teenage children\, Nicky has been through the school search and selection process herself from prep schools through to sixth form\, and co-founding Panoba in 2014 was a natural extension of her personal experiences. \nNicky has a passion for offering overseas families sound and honest advice\, together with a handholding service to navigate the complexities of the UK education system and the school admissions process. Recognising that each child is unique\, a bespoke approach is taken to each family Panoba works with\, ensuring that the final choice of school is centred around an understanding of the student and what will suit them best. \nNicky lives in North London with her family and runs the Panoba UK office. \n\nTheresa Glasmacher\, Managing Director\, Glasmacher Schulberatung \nTheresa Glasmacher is Managing Director of Glasmacher Schulberatung\, an agency specialized on the placement of students from Germany\, Austria and Switzerland in British boarding schools. After having spent her Sixth Form at a UK boarding school herself\, Theresa first did a banking apprenticeship in Munich. She then studied history and politics at the London School of Economics and at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University) in Boston. After university\, Theresa worked in the field of environmental and climate protection in Munich and Berlin\, where she was involved in Poland\, Hungary and Estonia’s processes of becoming EU members. She joined the family business Glasmacher Schulberatung in 2006 and for many years worked alongside her famous mother Barbara. She has been the agency’s Managing Director since 2013.
