The sooner your new GAP assistants have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding and understand their safeguarding responsibilities\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties\, feel able to support young people in their care and deal with any challenges. \nThis seminar will compliment a school-based induction and enable your new GAP assistants to have the knowledge and skills to make the best possible start to their boarding role. As young people themselves\, it is crucial schools recruiting GAP assistants support with a quality induction and training to get their GAP assistants settled. \nThis seminar will cover relevant aspects of the Duty of Care framework\, legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and ways in which delegates can meet the emotional needs of the boarders in their care. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. \nDelegates will be provided with a workbook including core information relating to boarding and safeguarding for their year involved in the boarding sector. It is recommended that delegates have familiarised themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the pages relating to boarding on the schools’ website. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe legal framework and Duty of Care – this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools\nMeeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding\, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by those in a Graduate or GAP assistant position\nUnderstanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents\, along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school\nWorking safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy\, safe and enjoying your role in boarding!\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding\, stake holders\, and the role of the GAP assistant within that\nAn increased confidence to be able to support their boarding team in meeting the needs of the boarders in their care\nIncreased awareness of the legal context and country-specific compliance framework\nRecommendations and reasons for best practice and looking after yourself\, setting professional boundaries and working as a team.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

It is relevant also to those who have recently taken up a new position\, allowing time for reflection on personal skills and how they work in a leadership role. \nThere is often a huge focus on equipping leaders in the classroom with the necessary skills to achieve the best outcomes for pupils\, but the skills required by pastoral leaders are often more subtle\, more wide-ranging and can often have a greater impact for the children in the school. This seminar aims to help prospective houseparents get ahead of the game and make the first few weeks in post less stressful and more productive. \nBoarding students need continuity of care and a consistent approach to school processes. Schools need boarding staff who are happy and will stay in post. A positive start for a houseparent encourages long service and gives confidence to students and parents. \nThis seminar will explore the many factors and issues associated with taking on a new boarding house. Promotion to houseparent and additional responsibility for running a house is exciting\, but it can also be stressful. The training day will provide an opportunity for delegates to think about the ethos for their new house\, review and consider key issues for students\, staff\, policies and procedures and the demands of managing the physical building. She completed a Masters in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and a post graduate diploma in Evidence Based Practice leading to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England.

In 1989 he became Principal\, King William’s College\, Isle of Man and from 1996 to 2009 was Master of Haileybury. Haileybury became a fully co-educational school in 1998\, having admitted girls to its Sixth Form in 1973. The International Baccalaureate Diploma has been taught alongside A Level at Haileybury since1999. \nIn 2009 Stuart became General Secretary of the Association of Governors of Independent Schools (AGBIS) whose purpose was\, and is\, to provide advice\, support and training for the Governors of its 800 or so member schools. He retired from that post in August 2016 and continues to undertake consultancy work for independent schools in Britain\, some commissioned separately and some on behalf of AGBIS. \nStuart has been a governor of twelve schools. Here\, she specialises in culturally mapping the environment and student wellbeing to make a cohesive\, impactful education for all the students and wider community. \nAside from her role as Assistant Principal\, Lauren is a Mental Health First Aid Instructor and teaches Business and Economics. Away from academic commitments\, Lauren is a keen advocate of DLD’s ‘Crypto-Club’\, using her previous business experience to encourage young entrepreneurs for the future. \nAway from DLD\, Lauren separates her time between writing and health hacking. She currently writes for several local businesses\, producing copy for technology\, candles or reflexology firms. If she isn’t cycling in the Surrey hills\, then she is open water swimming down on Branksome Beach. A self-confessed health addict\, at the weekends Lauren can be found on the golf course\, tennis court\, enjoying cryotherapy\, or scouting the latest health technology gadget. She is also a Governor for Greenfield School\, Woking and has worked with several hockey clubs in the local area to produce some of our current national players. \nGareth Evans \nGareth joined DLD College London in August 2016 as Director of Studies before being promoted to Assistant Principal (Upper School) and latterly Vice Principal (Pastoral). He joined us from Strode’s College where he was Head of the Creative Arts Faculty since 2009. \nAside from his role as Assistant Principal\, Gareth currently teaches Film. He has also taught Media A Level and Film Studies GCSE. Gareth is an examiner and moderator for EDUQAS. Beyond these academic commitments\, Gareth is involved in several CCA’s at DLD College including Community Projects\, Run Club and the Film Society. \nIn his free time Gareth is an avid ‘very’ amateur surfer and enjoys spending time on the beach. Gareth is a keen member of the community where he lives and was elected as District Councillor for Loxwood Ward (Chichester) in May 2019 and again in May 2023. He is also an award-winning community volunteer and was awarded a Community Builder Award by the Mayor of Newham which recognised his contribution to the local community he once lived in and continues to support. Eating disorders are a complex mental illness with a high mortality rate\, not only down to the eating disorder and malnutrition\, but also suicide. For staff working with young people\, having the confidence to offer support\, and open up conversations about eating disorders can be nerve-wracking. \nOur expert speaker\, Tina McGuff\, will address the need to raise awareness and have a proactive approach to supporting mental health concerns before the need for clinical intervention is reached. Having shared her struggles in her critically acclaimed memoir\, Seconds to Snap\, Tina has established herself as a leading voice on eating disorders\, mental health wellness and is a regular contributor across national media. Tina has appeared on Lorraine\, Channel 5\, ITV\, STV\, BBC as well as Jeremy Vine\, Radio 1 and other national and international media outlets. \nTina grew up in Dundee and spoke of her life being perfect – or so she thought. “I can tell you exactly the day it all went wrong – the day my mum attacked my dad with a kitchen knife. In those few\, short seconds\, a black hole opened up in my life and I fell right in.” Tina’s world turned upside down. Tina turned to the one thing she thought she could control – food and from this moment\, began the biggest fight of her life. \nTina openly shares her life-or-death struggle with anorexia and the darkest moments she experienced in her life whilst in and out of psychiatric wards. Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n\nMaria Strauss\, Partner\, Farrer & Co. \n\nMaria Strauss is a Partner at the law firm Farrer & Co. She has extensive experience in safeguarding and employment law. She acts for a variety of not for profit and education organisations including independent schools\, charities\, faith-based organisations and sports clubs. Maria has many years’ experience in handling sensitive and complex cases for clients. She is a specialist in investigations and a trained interviewer. Maria advises on all aspects of employment and equality law and was the lead author of the AGBIS Resource for Governors on Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion. Most recently\, Maria has advised on a number of complex cases such as bullying cases (including anonymous witnesses)\, safeguarding investigations into serious allegations with related parental complaints; whistleblowing complaints\, ‘clash of rights’ cases\, and a range of other cases involving staff\, children and parents. Maria is a governor of an independent prep school in London.

This course looks at the boarding experience through the eyes of the boarders themselves\, helping schools reflect on what they can do to maximise the impact of what they do. We will focus on key times in the day such as evenings and weekends\, and the major touchpoints in the year\, such as induction to help schools produce an action plan to produce the best boarding experience. \nTraining topics will include: \nCreating a great boarding experience: \n\nWhat makes a great induction process – winning over your boarders from before day 1.\nEvenings in boarding – balancing academics with other personal development activities.\nWeekends in boarding – building a great weekend programme for boarders.\nGetting the basics right – food\, exercise\, sleep…and wi-fi.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nBe able to audit the boarding programme at your school against best practice around the world.\nGet ideas for additions to your boarding programme to make it more attractive to current and future boarders.\nReflect on your weekend and evening provision to ensure it meets the needs of boarders.\n\nBOOK NOW\n \n\n \nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. Expectations on Governors\nJuly 2\, 2025\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: \nRichard Harman\, Chief Executive\, AGBIS \nRichard Harman was educated at The King’s School\, Worcester\, followed by Trinity College\, Cambridge\, where he read English.  Having spent two years working for an academic publisher\, he decided his real vocation was in teaching.  After five years at Marlborough College teaching English and Drama\, during which time he also completed his PGCE at Exeter University\, he spent 12 years at Eastbourne College.  Progressing from Head of English to Housemaster of a Sixth Form girls’ house to member of the Senior Management Team\, he then became Headmaster of Aldenham in September 2000 and thence to Uppingham in 2006. After a decade leading Uppingham and 32 years overall in teaching\, he embarked on a third career as Chief Executive of AGBIS. Richard is much enjoying the challenges at AGBIS\, having been Chairman of the Boarding Schools’ Association for 2011-12 and Chairman of HMC for 2014-15.
