The benefits of having animals working with children has been increasingly understood and researched in recent years. However\, the media portrayal of dogs is not always positive and there are health and safety concerns to be addressed if dogs are to be in and around schools. We trained our Labrador to be a therapy dog and piloted a programme in a school we both worked at. The school was a residential school as well as day pupils with a range of special education and behavioural needs. \nThe outcome was sensational and the young people we worked with were seen to have huge benefits in their wellbeing and educational needs. \nThis led to us delivering the programme in various new schools and continuing to refine and develop animal assisted therapy specifically around dogs in schools\, to become the leading provider of Canine Assisted Therapy in the Uk. \nTo date  we have worked with over 300 schools across the country\, and currently service approximately 200 hours a week of Canine Assisted Interventions across the entire spectrum of educational establishments.

He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nDavid Walker\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director BSA/TIOB  \nDavid is the BSA Director and joined the BSA group in August 2023. This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to boarding. The sooner staff new to boarding have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise.  \n This seminar will cover the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and meeting boarders’ needs. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. In advance of the seminar\, it is recommended that delegates have familiarised themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the boarding section of the schools’ website and promotional material that relate to boarding.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nSafeguarding and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding – this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools \nMeeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding\, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by the pastoral team \nUnderstanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school \nWorking safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping you healthy\, safe\, and enjoying your role in boarding! \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding\, and their role within that \nAn increased confidence to be able to support the young people in your care \nIncreased awareness of the legal context\, safeguarding and National Minimum Standards for Boarding \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

The sooner your new Graduate and GAP assistants have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise.  \n This seminar will compliment a school-based induction and enable your new Graduate and GAP assistants to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to make the best possible start to their role in boarding in your school.  \n This seminar will cover relevant aspects of the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and ways in which delegates can meet the emotional needs of the boarders in their care. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house.  \n In advance of the seminar\, it is recommended that delegates have familiarised themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the boarding section of the schools’ website and promotional material that relate to boarding. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

The day focuses both on the process itself and preparation for forthcoming inspection visits\, as well as providing relevant updates on new legislation that could impact an inspection result.  \nThroughout the session\, information and actions will refer to the new National Minimum Standards 2022\, as well as referencing appropriate updates to other guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. He also liaises with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE on matters relating to compliance and inspection standards\, and compiles the BSA Self-Assessment toolkit\, which he first produced in 2002\, since which time he has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board. \n\nSue Duff \nFollowing a successful career in commerce\, culminating in a senior position in a world leading market research organisation\, Sue made the transition to teaching in the independent sector.  Having worked in prep\, GSA and HMC environments\, she has a breadth of experience across the independent schools sector. Sue has always focussed on boarding in her teaching career having set up two houses from scratch as well as running boarding teams. Before the leap to self employment\, she was on the Senior Leadership Team at one of the country’s premier HMC boarding schools\, having led the integration of the school into a fully co-educational environment and held various management positions.  Sue now works with schools\, both in the UK and worldwide\, as an inspector and consultant predominantly looking at boarding\, pastoral and academic systems\, helping to improve the outcomes that pupils experience.  She also works on whole school compliance projects.  Sue has worked with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) since 2011 and is a Lead/Reporting Inspector\, also inspecting for AEGIS and COBIS. She has been working with the BSA undertaking consultancy and training for almost 20 years. Sue is vice-chair of Governors at a large HMC co-ed school in Worcestershire.

The last 14 years of his police service was in the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU). Philip is a qualified AIM3 Assessor of children displaying HSB. Philip also quality assured the Home Office Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Service (HSBSS) where he oversaw and triaged all the requests for support and advised personally on all the complex cases. Schools need boarding staff who are happy and will stay in post for a good amount of time. Promotion to Houseparent and additional responsibility for running a house is exciting\, but it can also be stressful. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

When they leave us\, do we give them as much help and support to manage the transition from the school (where their needs are being met by a dedicated team of professional and caring individuals)\, to the next phase where they must begin fending for themselves?  \nIt is essential we consider the ongoing success and wellbeing of our students\, alongside their academic successes and the impact these will have on life after school.  \nBy the end of the session\, delegates should have a better understanding of what the needs of school leavers are and have developed an initial “Outduction” plan for your school.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nMeeting students’ needs post school - this session will investigate the needs of students who are leaving school (managing time\, relationships and finances) and the potential pitfalls they might encounter along the way \nThe Six Human Needs model - this session will investigate why students behave the way they do when they leave school and then ways in which staff can put some certainty into an uncertain world for them after school \nDeveloping an “Outduction” programme – this session will involve working in groups to develop an initial school “Outduction” programme to suit the needs of your students and your environment \nContinuation of group work – the training day will finish with a collation of all the points raised in the group work to share\, review and take away \n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn increased understanding of the specific needs of senior students leaving the school community\, and why students behave the way they do \n\n\nAn increased understanding of the soft skills required on leaving school \nA draft “Outduction” programme bespoke to your students and school. \n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

They have recently been encouraged to take a risk assessment view in many other areas.  \nThis seminar will look at taking a risk assessed approach to all forms of harmful behaviour in young people. It will look at this both from an individual and a whole-setting perspective. We will examine the range of harmful behaviours present in settings today and look at how to identify and respond to them. We will do this with reference to the latest version of Keeping Children Safe in Education and Ofsted’s review of sexual abuse in schools.  \nThe seminar will look at how to best respond when an individual case of harmful behaviour has been identified. It will also look at how settings can proactively risk assess and mitigate those risks for a range of likely harmful behaviours.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nIdentifying the range of harmful behaviours present in settings\, including harmful sexual behaviours. \nDiversity\, vulnerability and disproportionality: what we know from cohorts of harmers and harmed children & young people \nBest practice in assessment\, safety planning\, intervention and moving on \nRisk assessment for whole settings.
