It covers the differences in neurological function across the population. This role involves working with senior leaders to discuss EDI strategic decisions and policy\, working with both Teaching and Professional Services staff to foster a more inclusive community\, and working with the pupil led Voices4Change group. Our Caterham Voice4Change group actively promotes diversity and inclusion across all aspects of school\, organising awareness raising events\, driving positive reflection and actioning change\, creating celebratory resources\, as well as leading assemblies. \n\nEd Boulter-Comer\, Houseparent\, Fettes College \nEd Started teaching in the Independent Sector in 2002. The State Sector could not employ him at that point as he was gay\, very much out of the closet\, and Section 28 still forbade the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality. Being a teacher well before sexual orientation became a protected characteristic in 2010\, he has forged a career of ‘firsts’ in the schools he has worked in. First out teacher. First out teacher in a boarding House. First teacher to get a civil partnership. First teacher to have adoption leave. First gay Houseparent. Going first can be a leap of faith for individuals and institutions and Ed will share some of the ways in which he has brought people along with him over the past two decades. \nEd is the Houseparent of a Senior Boy’s House at Fettes College in Edinburgh. He\, his husband\, and their two children live alongside 60 students\, not all of whom are boys. \n\nM Jolly\, Director of Wellbeing and Inclusion\, Charterhouse School \nM Jolly is the director of wellbeing and inclusion and senior leader at Charter House school. She is also a qualified therapist and clinical Supervisor. She has worked in schools with young people for over ten years and is creating real change within her school. M Jolly\, harnesses student voice to bring awareness to the school community and beyond about important issues. The EDI vision between 2021-2023 has placed emphasis on allyship and anti-discrimination\, culminating in pupil-led Charters for Anti-Racism\, Anti-Sexism\, LGBTQ+ and Anti-Bullying. Her school were recently awarded The Rainbow Flag Award\, in recognition of their pro-active and whole School approach to the positive inclusion and visibility of LGBT+ people.

Managing the increase in choices that boarders will have to make as they approach the significant transition towards life after school\, they may find themselves under increasing pressure and in need of support from those around them. This course is designed to help boarding staff to grow in confidence in their role and promote the knowledge and skills required to meet the needs of senior boarders. \nOlder teenagers face an increasingly diverse set of pressures and many of them need additional support in coping with them. Certainly\, they need to feel that they are in a safe environment where they can discuss the concerns that they have and build their resilience and independence. Boarding staff have a role in helping young people to make good choices around the risks they face and\, therefore\, they need to have an understanding of the issues that teenagers may encounter. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nCommon issues for the older teen – academic/professional (parental and peer pressure\, success\, managing transition to adulthood\, preparing for life after school)\nCommon issues for the older teen – personal/social (relationships\, social media and online safety\, drugs/alcohol\, risk taking and dangerous behaviours)\nSupporting teenagers – promoting resilience\, self-worth and making good choices\nCase studies and group discussion.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nImproved understanding of the common issues for older teens\nIncreased confidence in supporting older teens.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker:  \nTom Hadcroft\, Headteacher\, Berkhamsted Boys School \nTom Hadcroft joined Berkhamsted Boys School in January 2022 as Headteacher from DLD College London\, where he was Senior Deputy Head\, overseeing on the Pastoral and Boarding sides of the school for five years. During this time DLD College London were recognised with six national awards\, including Boarding School of the Year and innovation awards in Mental Health\, Wellbeing and Student voice. Previously\, he had school leadership roles at Collège Alpin Beau Soleil in Switzerland and St John’s School Leatherhead. Before his teaching career he worked in the finance sector and has recently completed a Masters in Educational Leadership\, with a focus on coaching in education. \nTom is a Council of International School Accreditation Team member and has a keen interest in international education and international boarding. He has recruited in China\, Croatia\, Thailand and Kazakhstan and has been a BSA Tutor on the Advanced Certificate course since 2017.

He joined us from Strode’s College where he was Head of the Creative Arts Faculty since 2009. \nAside from his role as Assistant Principal\, Gareth currently teaches Film. He has also taught Media A Level and Film Studies GCSE. Gareth is an examiner and moderator for EDUQAS. Beyond these academic commitments\, Gareth is involved in several CCA’s at DLD College including Community Projects\, Run Club and the Film Society. \nIn his free time Gareth is an avid ‘very’ amateur surfer and enjoys spending time on the beach. Gareth is a keen member of the community where he lives and was elected as District Councillor for Loxwood Ward (Chichester) in May 2019 and again in May 2023. He is also an award-winning community volunteer and was awarded a Community Builder Award by the Mayor of Newham which recognised his contribution to the local community he once lived in and continues to support. He has been involved in setting up a history society\, running an oral history project in collaboration with ‘Discovering Stratford Village’\, organising inter-generational disco parties\, running children’s events at the local library and has been a co-presenter of East End Mystery Show on East London Radio. \nGareth recently completed his MEd in Senior Leadership and Management at Buckingham University but also holds a PGCE from Oxford Brooks\, a MA in Human Resource Management from London Metropolitan University and a BA Hons (2:1) in Media and Communication Studies. \nLauren Moors\, Assistant Principal (Academic)\, DLD College London \nThroughout her career\, Lauren has held a number of roles ranging from Housemistress\, Director of Sport and Strategy Ambassador\, before switching over to become Assistant Principal (Academic) at DLD College\, London. Here\, she specialises in culturally mapping the environment and student wellbeing to make a cohesive\, impactful education for all the students and wider community. \nAside from her role as Assistant Principal\, Lauren is a Mental Health First Aid Instructor and teaches Business and Economics. Away from academic commitments\, Lauren is a keen advocate of DLD’s ‘Crypto-Club’\, using her previous business experience to encourage young entrepreneurs for the future. \nAway from DLD\, Lauren separates her time between writing and health hacking. She currently writes for several local businesses\, producing copy for technology\, candles or reflexology firms. If she isn’t cycling in the Surrey hills\, then she is open water swimming down on Branksome Beach. A self-confessed health addict\, at the weekends Lauren can be found on the golf course\, tennis court\, enjoying cryotherapy\, or scouting the latest health technology gadget. She is also a Governor for Greenfield School\, Woking and has worked with several hockey clubs in the local area to produce some of our current national players.

She completed a Masters in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and a post graduate diploma in Evidence Based Practice leading to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England.

He is also qualified as the following: \n\nFamily Liaison Officer (FLO)\nDisaster Victim Identification Officer (DVI)\nSignificant Witness interviewer (Sig Wit)\nEnhanced Cognitive Witness Interviewer\nDomestic Abuse Officer\nPIP Level 2 investigator\nAchieving Best Evidence (ABE- VRI vulnerable and intimidated witness interviewer)\nSpecialist Child Abuse Investigative Development Programme (SCAIDP)\nJoint Investigator – Section 47 Children Act ‘89\n\nPhilip was also seconded to the Training Department for 2 years\, where he received qualifications in training and delivered all these subjects\, including Harmful Sexual Behaviours (HSB). \nPhilip is a qualified AIM3 Assessor of children displaying HSB. \nPhilip also quality assured the Home Office Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Service (HSBSS) where he oversaw and triaged all the requests for support and advised personally on all the complex cases. \nPhilip supports survivors and families who have been victim of all types of abuse\, including technology assisted child sexual abuse (TACSA) through his work as a consultant for the Marie Collins Foundation. \n

This seminar aims to help prospective Houseparents get ahead of the game and make the first few weeks in post less stressful and more productive for all concerned. \nBoarding students need continuity of care and a consistent approach to school processes. Schools need boarding staff who are happy and will stay in post for a good amount of time. A positive start for a Houseparent encourages longevity of service and gives confidence to students\, and their parents\, alike. \nThis seminar will explore the many factors and issues associated with taking on a new boarding house. Promotion to Houseparent and additional responsibility for running a house is exciting\, but it can also be stressful. The training day will provide an opportunity for delegates to think about the ethos for their new house\, review and consider key issues relating to students\, staff\, policies and procedures as well as the demands of managing the physical building itself. The day will finish by looking at the elusive work life balance and ways in which this can be achieved during a hectic life in a busy boarding school. \nIn advance of this session\, it would be helpful for delegates to have an overview of the schools’ policies and procedures\, and those of the boarding house they are moving into if they differ from the schools’. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

From recognising how children and young people grieve and the physiological impact of grief\, to supporting young children in coping with a return to ‘normal’ activities after suffering a loss\, this seminar will equip delegates with a clearer understanding of how to help. \nThe focus will be on the age range of 8-18 years\, but may go beyond these years to account for developmental variations. On average\, 1 in every 29 children will be bereaved of a parent or sibling – that’s one per class. \nWinston’s Wish was the UK’s first childhood bereavement charity\, and has been supporting bereaved children and young people for over 30 years\, providing emotional and practical bereavement support to children\, young people and those who care for them.

Dr Jody Walshe will take delegates further into the study of CBT practices and how we can use these to support young people in establishing resilience\, self-confidence and managing stress and negative feelings. \nThis half-day course is for delegates who have been using some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches in their work. This course will be an opportunity to develop and extend the skills of delegates who have started to apply some CBT tools in their work. The session will be bespoke and designed to build on the skills that delegates are already using\, and introduce new tools to utilise. \nDelegates will leave the session with new skills and tools to extend their work and skills when working with individuals\, small groups and whole classes/houses. Delegates will also have the opportunity to raise specific areas where they would like to develop their skills which will be addressed e.g.\, wanting to use CBT tools with a wider range of young people\, to address different needs e.g.\, exam anxiety\, perfectionism\, peer relationships\, self-esteem\, social media use. \nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nDr Jody Walshe\, Educational and Child Psychologist \nDr Jody Walshe is an Educational and Child Psychologist working in London borough. Jody completed her doctorate at the University of East London. She is also a Consultant Psychologist providing consultations for foster carers and supervising social workers. She is a registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council. \nBefore commencing her training\, Jody worked as a teacher\, learning support assistant and tutor with young people from 5-19. The focus of much of her work looked at anxiety and mental health issues in school settings. Her doctoral research explored the experiences\, perceptions and training needs of secondary school staff working with self-harm.

After a decade leading Uppingham and 32 years overall in teaching\, he embarked on a third career as Chief Executive of AGBIS. Richard is much enjoying the challenges at AGBIS\, having been Chairman of the Boarding Schools’ Association for 2011-12 and Chairman of HMC for 2014-15. \n

The benefits of having animals working with children has been increasingly understood and researched in recent years. However\, the media portrayal of dogs is not always positive and there are health and safety concerns to be addressed if dogs are to be in and around schools. This seminar explores the research behind having dogs in schools\, looks at some of the potential pitfalls\, presents some ideas for how dogs can be positive integrated into the boarding environment and will give space to explore some case studies of having dogs in boarding houses. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nResearch on the benefits of having dogs in boarding schools\, particularly with regard to mental health.\nSome of the potential risks and pitfalls of having dogs in schools.\nIdeas for bringing dogs into a boarding environment.\nCase studies.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nKnow the benefits of bringing dogs into a boarding environment.\nUnderstand some risks of having dogs in boarding and how to mitigate them.\nExplore some ways that dogs can be successfully integrated into boarding.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker:  \n \nJames Plumer – CEO Canine Assisted Learning Ltd \nMy wife and I founded the business 10 yrs ago. We trained our Labrador to be a therapy dog and piloted a programme in a school we both worked at. The school was a residential school as well as day pupils with a range of special education and behavioural needs. \nThe outcome was sensational and the young people we worked with were seen to have huge benefits in their wellbeing and educational needs. \nThis led to us delivering the programme in various new schools and continuing to refine and develop animal assisted therapy specifically around dogs in schools\, to become the leading provider of Canine Assisted Therapy in the Uk. \nTo date  we have worked with over 300 schools across the country\, and currently service approximately 200 hours a week of Canine Assisted Interventions across the entire spectrum of educational establishments.

This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to boarding. The sooner staff new to boarding have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise.  \n This seminar will cover the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and meeting boarders’ needs. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.
