This seminar is designed to support staff who are new to boarding by complementing their school-based induction and providing essential context around the key responsibilities and expectations of the role. \nBy equipping new boarding staff with a solid understanding of the principles\, legal context\, and practicalities of boarding care\, schools can quickly establish confident\, capable teams who enjoy their duties and provide high-quality support to the young people in their care. \nThe session will explore the Duty of Care framework\, safeguarding\, roles and boundaries\, and how to meet the everyday needs of boarders. Delegates are encouraged to familiarise themselves in advance with their school’s boarding handbook and relevant boarding-related materials from their school’s website. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nSafeguarding and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding:\nAn overview of legal and inspection requirements\, with a focus on current safeguarding expectations in boarding practice.\nMeeting the Needs of Boarders:\nPractical case studies to explore common scenarios in boarding life and how to manage them effectively and empathetically.\nUnderstanding Your Role in Boarding:\nDiscussion around the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents—and your own expectations as a member of the pastoral team.\nWorking Safely and Looking After Yourself:\nTips and guidance on maintaining your wellbeing\, working safely\, and finding fulfilment in your boarding role.\n\nLearning outcomes: \nBy the end of the session\, participants will be able to: \n\nUnderstand the key principles and expectations of working in a boarding environment\nFeel more confident in supporting the wellbeing and development of boarders\nRecognise the legal context\, including safeguarding responsibilities and the National Minimum Standards for Boarding\nReflect on their role within the wider pastoral team and identify strategies for maintaining personal wellbeing and resilience\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeakers: \nDavid Walker FTIOB\, Executive Director\, Boarding and Director\, BSA/TIOB \nDavid joined BSA Group in August 2023. Before taking up his post at the BSA\, David was Deputy Head Pastoral at a large co-ed independent school in the South-East. \n\n \nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998.  Dale leads on all safeguarding\, inspection and compliance matters for BSA Group\, including liaising with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE in England\, and leading on the group’s work in Scotland and Wales. He trains and delivers consultancy extensively for BSA and SACPA and is Vice Chair of the Group’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Advisory Board (SAFCAB). \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board\, is a safeguarding trainer for the Methodist Church\, is a trustee of the National Youth String Orchestra and chair of a small performing arts charity. He also holds volunteer roles in sport and in the Scout Association.

His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

Prior to joining the BSA\, Gaelle was Deputy Head Pastoral\, DSL and Head of Boarding at an all-girls independent school in the South-East. \n\n \nBethan Hudson MTIOB\, Executive Director\, Consultancy and Director\, BAISIS/HIEDA \nBethan joined the BSA team as Training Manager in September 2017. Bethan has worked in two independent boarding schools in the UK and Switzerland\, the latter as Housemistress to 36 pupils. Following her time in Switzerland\, she was a Pastoral Manager for an inner-city state academy before working in the charity sector for Debrett’s running the ‘Debrett’s Foundation’ training programme. \nIn her role\, Bethan plans and manages all Day Seminars\, Conferences\, INSET and Consultancy\, as well as being Director of BAISIS. He also holds volunteer roles in sport and in the Scout Association. \n\nSue Duff\, Education Professional\, Inspector\, Consultant\, Trainer\, Trustee\, Governor & Director \nFollowing a successful career in commerce\, culminating in a senior position in a world leading market research organisation\, Sue made the transition to teaching in the independent sector.  Having worked in prep\, GSA and HMC environments\, she has a breadth of experience across the independent schools sector. Sue has always focussed on boarding in her teaching career having set up two houses from scratch as well as running boarding teams. Before the leap to self employment\, she was on the Senior Leadership Team at one of the country’s premier HMC boarding schools\, having led the integration of the school into a fully co-educational environment and held various management positions.  Sue now works with schools\, both in the UK and worldwide\, as an inspector and consultant predominantly looking at boarding\, pastoral and academic systems\, helping to improve the outcomes that pupils experience.  She also works on whole school compliance projects.  Sue has worked with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) since 2011 and is a Lead/Reporting Inspector\, also inspecting for AEGIS and COBIS. She has been working with the BSA undertaking consultancy and training for almost 20 years. Sue is vice-chair of Governors at a large HMC co-ed school in Worcestershire.
