The session will reflect on examples of how biases and assumptions can contribute to racism\, with conversations on self-awareness encouraged. The role of allyship will be explored by defining allyship and its importance in promoting racial justice and discussing ways in which individuals can become allies in the fight against racism and bias.  Active listening\, learning from others’ experiences and perspectives as well as student voice will be discussed. The session will provide examples of how students can safely challenge racism and advocate for change\, with ways for adults to encourage safe and respectful dialogue among students. More resources for further education and understanding will be provided alongside examples of how best to continue allyship and advocacy for racial justice in education and society. \nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \n \nMichelle Mangal\, Independent Consultant \nMichelle Mangal is a consultant\, teacher\, and creative with over fifteen years of experience in the not-for-profit sector. Throughout her career\, she has worked with universities\, schools\, and community groups\, delivering educational programmes\, and facilitating workshops on a range of topics\, including Black history\, poetry\, and racial equity. Michelle has a deep understanding of the needs and challenges of black and minority ethnic communities\, and she is a powerful advocate for change through education and creative writing. Her poetry draws on her Caribbean heritage and love of music\, and she has performed her work at venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and the Roundhouse. Most recently\, Michelle worked as a Racial Equity Advisor for the Youth Endowment Fund\, where she applied her expertise to help tackle racial disparities in funding youth justice projects. She is passionate about being an Ally and the healing power of the arts and nature.

This seminar will give an overview of effective boarding provision including the legal and regulatory aspects of caring for students. Additional topics will include managing staff and effective communication\, and listening skills in a busy\, school-based environment. \nOften\, administrative and support staff in a school are left to work in semi-isolation from students due to the nature of their roles and their working hours. This seminar will afford delegates the chance to develop a wider understanding of the issues faced by boarders and day students in their school. The seminar will also explore how great communication between all stakeholders in an organisation is a significant key to success for the organisation as a whole.  \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe boarding context\, including safeguarding and current issues - this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools\nUnderstanding the needs of the boarders – this session will focus on the emotional and physical needs of the boarders in your school\nWorking and communicating as a team - in this session the group will look at ways to effectively manage the various team members in a school\, from your own office/administrative team\, to the wider context of support\, pastoral\, medical and teaching staff\nManaging difficult situations – effective communication skills are key to positive relationships in a school. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. This seminar will complement a school-based induction and provide a wider context for staff new to Boarding. The sooner staff new to Boarding have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in Boarding\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties and feel able to support the young people in their care and deal with any challenges that may arise. \nThis seminar will cover the Duty of Care framework\, the legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and meeting boarders’ needs. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. A topic which is often misunderstood\, highly stigmatised and hidden is delivered in a relatable manner. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nBetter understanding of self-harm (definition / triggers / functions / statistics)\nRelationship between self-harm and suicide\nSigns and indicators of self-harm\nBroaching suspected self-harm\nBest practice response to disclosures (alternative strategies / language use / general response)\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nUnderstand what self-harm behaviours are and what can lead to them\nUnderstand the importance of asking about suicidal thoughts when presented with self-harm\nHave improved confidence in broaching and responding to disclosures\, appreciating the importance of appropriate use of language\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nLisa Thomson\, Charlie Waller Trust \nLisa has had a long career in a variety of Mental Health settings within the NHS. She originally trained as a Mental Health Nurse in 1990 and subsequently worked in inpatient and community settings with adults\, children\, young people and their families. She completed a Masters in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and a post graduate diploma in Evidence Based Practice leading to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist. Most of her career has been spent working directly with children\, young people and families in NHS CAMHS and she now works part time in independent clinical practice. In addition\, she works as a freelance trainer for the Charlie Waller Trust delivering training on Mental Health Issues to schools\, primary care and a wide variety of organisations working with children and young people. As part of a nonprofit organisation called Brighter Futures Together\, she trains NHS CAMHS clinicians to deliver evidence based training to the children’s workforce across the Thames Valley and the South of England.

DESCRIPTION:Date: June 27\, 2024\nTime: 10:30 – 15:30\nCost: BSA Full Member – £155\, BSA Affiliate Member – £230\, Non-member – £310\nAudience: Boarding staff\, Head of Boarding\, Deputy Head.\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – Day Seminar\n\n\nCourse outline:  \nThis virtual day seminar aims to equip those aspiring to move into leadership positions within boarding with the relevant skills and knowledge to lead their teams effectively\, and with the best outcomes for the boarders in their care. It is relevant also to those who have recently taken up a new position\, allowing time for reflection on personal skills and how they work in a leadership role. \nThere is often a huge focus on equipping leaders in the classroom with the necessary skills to achieve the best outcomes for pupils\, but the skills required by pastoral leaders are often more subtle\, more wide-ranging and can often have a greater impact for the children in the school. Successful leadership is important to cultivate a genuine and strong team dynamic which positively impacts on the day to day lives of all within the boarding house\, and community. \nDuring this training\, delegates will have the opportunity to share thoughts\, experiences and any concerns with the trainer and other delegates. SUMMARY:SACPA & BSA - Sextortion: lessons from case files
DESCRIPTION:Date: June 28\, 2024 \nTime: 14:00 – 16:00\nCost: SACPA/BSA Member Rate: £110\, Non-member Rate: £220*\nAudience:  This seminar is for safeguarding practitioners and leaders who may work or be working with children\, their families and other professionals where children are subject to financially motivated extortion and technology assisted child sexual abuse.\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – seminar\n\n\nCourse outline: \nThe NCA and CEOP report significant increases in children and young people being forced to meet financial demands after being threatened with the release of nudes or semi-nudes\, and this crime of blackmail is referred to as `sextortion’. \nThis interactive seminar seeks to bring safeguarding practitioners together to explore\, debate and reflect on the phenomena of sextortion.  Led by a specialist in technology assisted child sexual abuse who will lead the seminar and answer questions on this area of safeguarding practice.  The seminar aims to provide a space for practice reflection that prepares safeguarding practitioners to identify\, respond and support children affected by sextortion and related harms. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nWhat is financially motivated sexual extortion and how does the Nudes and Semi-Nudes Guidance help us\nWhat does the voice and experience of children affected tell us\nHow can internal processes and multi-agency safeguarding systems support or re-traumatise child victims\nWhat are the implications for future practice and preventative work with children\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nDevelop understanding of financially motivated sexual extortion\nUnderstand how the latest Nudes and Semi-Nudes guidance supports safeguarding work\nConsider the lived experience of affected children including victim blaming and possible re-traumatisation\nEngage in interactive and reflective discussion\, sharing experiences and debating practice dilemmas\nInform future policy and practice development within their setting to better identify\, respond and prevent financially motivated extortion\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nPhilip Baines\, Safeguarding and Training Consultant \nPhilip was a Detective having spent 30 years in the police. The last 14 years of his police service was in the Child Abuse Investigation Unit (CAIU). He is also qualified as the following: \n\nFamily Liaison Officer (FLO)\nDisaster Victim Identification Officer (DVI)\nSignificant Witness interviewer (Sig Wit)\nEnhanced Cognitive Witness Interviewer\nDomestic Abuse Officer\nPIP Level 2 investigator\nAchieving Best Evidence (ABE- VRI vulnerable and intimidated witness interviewer)\nSpecialist Child Abuse Investigative Development Programme (SCAIDP)\nJoint Investigator – Section 47 Children Act ‘89\n\nPhilip was also seconded to the Training Department for 2 years\, where he received qualifications in training and delivered all these subjects\, including Harmful Sexual Behaviours (HSB). \nPhilip is a qualified AIM3 Assessor of children displaying HSB. \nPhilip also quality assured the Home Office Harmful Sexual Behaviours Support Service (HSBSS) where he oversaw and triaged all the requests for support and advised personally on all the complex cases. \nPhilip supports survivors and families who have been victim of all types of abuse\, including technology assisted child sexual abuse (TACSA) through his work as a consultant for the Marie Collins Foundation. \n
