We pride ourselves on having strong communities within our schools but this means we need to be considerate and conscientious in welcoming and inducting people. Suggestions and ideas will be shared to encourage delegates to review the induction processes for both new staff and new students. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe benefits of a strong induction programme\nInduction for new staff to the boarding community/house\nInduction for new boarders to the boarding community/house\nThe wider school induction.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn increased understanding of the importance of a successful induction for both students and staff\nTips and recommendations on what to include in your induction process for students\nTips and recommendations on what to include in your induction process for staff.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.

She has also been a keynote speaker at international and UK schools. \nHer work includes speaking to local communities and schools about her recovery journey from anorexia\, alongside her recent work with JenUp. JenUp is a non-profit organisation based around early intervention and prevention of eating disorders. She provides students\, parents\, and teachers with various types of workshops on eating disorder awareness\, disordered eating\, body image\, nutrition\, and how to support someone in need. Sue has always focussed on boarding in her teaching career having set up two houses from scratch as well as running boarding teams. Before the leap to self employment\, she was on the Senior Leadership Team at one of the country’s premier HMC boarding schools\, having led the integration of the school into a fully co-educational environment and held various management positions.  Sue now works with schools\, both in the UK and worldwide\, as an inspector and consultant predominantly looking at boarding\, pastoral and academic systems\, helping to improve the outcomes that pupils experience.  She also works on whole school compliance projects.  Sue has worked with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) since 2011 and is a Lead/Reporting Inspector\, also inspecting for AEGIS and COBIS. She has been working with the BSA undertaking consultancy and training for almost 20 years. Sue is vice-chair of Governors at a large HMC co-ed school in Worcestershire.

DESCRIPTION:🏷️ From £135\n🎧 All boarding staff\n📍 Online\n🎥 Watch live\n✅ Included in BSA CPD Pass \n\nCourse outline: \nThis practical session is designed for staff who are new to the boarding environment\, providing the knowledge and confidence to support pupils’ health and wellbeing in a boarding setting. \nDelegates will explore common medical scenarios\, including understanding new pupil medical information\, vaccinations\, international medications\, administering medication within the boarding house\, working effectively with the Health Centre\, managing minor illnesses\, and promoting healthy sleep routines. Through practical guidance and real-life examples\, participants will gain a clear understanding of their role in supporting boarders safely and confidently. \nLearning Outcomes \nBy the end of this session\, delegates will be able to: \n\nUnderstand how to support pupils with a range of medical needs\, including international medications and vaccinations.\nAdminister medication safely and work effectively with the school’s Health Centre.\nRespond confidently to common minor illnesses and promote healthy sleep and wellbeing in the boarding environment.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: Skyler Moulder\, Senior Nurse Advisor \nSkyler did her Adult Nursing BSc at Kings College London in 2011 and went straight into community nursing. After the birth of her first son she stumbled into community school nursing and never looked back. During her time as a community school nurse she covered primary and secondary schools all across Cambridgeshire. She completed training such as the CAMHS foundation module\, Sexual Health and Contraception module and was trained in Safeguarding Children Level 3. She completed her PG Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing in 2016 when she was pregnant with her second son\, which she later topped up to a full MSc in 2023 when she was pregnant with her daughter! This also included qualifying as a Nurse Prescriber. Skyler co-lead the development of a 0-19 Duty Desk and the introduction of the Chathealth text service in Cambridgeshire Community Services. In 2019 she became a Team Manager for the CCS Healthy Child Programme – managing a team of Nursery Nurses\, Health Visitors and School Nurses during the pandemic. In 2020 she was recruited to be the Lead Nurse at The Leys in Cambridge\, to lead a team covering 24 hour care for around 575 pupils (over half of which are boarders). This is where she is now and where her passion for independent school nursing started. \n\nThis event will be held jointly with:

It will consider the current position of the government on social media bans and what this means for children and young people and those who care for them and work with them as well as highlighting online safety aspects of the latest statutory guidance. \n\n\n\nTraining topics will include: \n\nProvide an overview of the latest guidance\, trends and headlines in online safety \nSignpost useful sites and resources to inform and educate about online safety \nReview strategies for meaningful engagement with children and young people as they navigate the online world \nSignpost links to support risk assessment\, intervention and education sessions with young people who are particularly vulnerable online. \n\n\nLearning outcomes:\n\nDelegates will consider how to talk to children and young people about the current online safety landscape in a meaningful way\nDelegates will have a greater understanding of key guidance\, legislation and trends\, including considerations around AI\, smart glasses and SOE (sadistic online exploitation)\nDelegates will be signposted to the latest useful sites and resources to inform and educate about online safety and managing online life.\n\n\n\nBOOK NOW \nThis event will be held jointly with: \n \n  \n  \n  \n\nSpeaker: \nKarl Hopwood\, Online safety expert \nKarl is an independent online safety expert. He is a member of UKCIS (UK Council for Internet Safety) and sits on the UKCIS evidence group\, education working group and the early warning group as well as on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre. He also sits on the Roblox trust and safety board where he represents the Insafe network. He was part of an expert steering group with TikTok looking at harmful and dangerous online challenges and regularly contributes to content for Internet Matters\, recently delivering their online safety training for those working with children in care commissioned by Ofcom. \nKarl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission\, the UN and several Local Authorities within the UK and in Europe. \nAs an ex primary headteacher\, he continues to work closely in schools across Europe with children\, young people\, parents\, teachers and governors to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl has been employed for the last 19 years as an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU Better Internet for Kids programme where he is responsible for the coordination of safer internet helplines and awareness centres across Europe. Karl was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Marie Collins Foundation for 7 years\, a charity which supports young people who have been sexually abused and exploited online and is now Chair of the board of trustees of Childnet international and Chair of the executive committee of SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association). Karl has also worked with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and chaired the working group to re-write their Child Online Protection Guidance.

DESCRIPTION:🏷️ From £135\n🎧 Boarding and pastoral staff at all levels\n📍 Online\n✅ Included in BSA CPD Pass \n\nCourse outline:  \nThis seminar aims to help boarding staff in BSA international schools have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding. \nBy the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. In advance of the seminar\, it is recommended that delegates have familiarised themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the boarding section of the schools’ website and promotional material that relate to boarding. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nMeeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding\, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by the pastoral team\nUnderstanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school\nWorking safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy\, safe and enjoying your role in boarding!\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding\, and their role within that\nAn increased confidence to be able to support the young people in your care.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \n \nDale Wilkins\, Executive Director\, Scotland/Wales and Accredited/Compliance \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards\, having previously been a course tutor since 1998.  Dale leads on all safeguarding\, inspection and compliance matters for Abitas Group\, including liaising with ISI\, Ofsted and DfE in England\, and leading on the group’s work in Scotland and Wales. He trains and delivers consultancy extensively for BSA and SACPA and is Vice Chair of the Group’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Advisory Board (SAFCAB). \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board\, is a safeguarding trainer for the Methodist Church\, is a trustee of the National Youth String Orchestra and chair of a small performing arts charity. He also holds volunteer roles in sport and in the Scout Association.

Jody completed her doctorate at the University of East London. She is also a Consultant Psychologist providing consultations for foster carers and supervising social workers. She is a registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council. Before commencing her training\, Jody worked as a teacher\, learning support assistant and tutor with young people from 5-19. The focus of much of her work looked at anxiety and mental health issues in school settings. Her doctoral research explored the experiences\, perceptions and training needs of secondary school staff working with self-harm.
