Throughout the three days there will be opportunities to meet\, collaborate and discuss with other participants and to learn from case studies and good practice from other schools. \nContent: \nThe course will bring together staff from a wide range of backgrounds who will share knowledge and experiences to both support you with this important work and to challenge your thinking to enable professional growth. \nOver the three days we will explore the ‘why’ of this work including areas such as identity\, belonging\, use of language\, empowerment and intersectionality. Legal and inspection requirements will be unpacked\, and auditing and action planning discussed. The importance and power of courageous and compassionate leadership in creating sustained change will be fully explored and through interactive sessions which will include an exploration of coaching as a tool\, you will develop practical techniques to help support the important conversations needed for your work in this area. \n\nCOURSE OVERVIEW\nBelow is a preview of some of the exceptional speakers and key topics that will be covered throughout the course. You will have the opportunity to engage with leaders from diverse backgrounds who bring extensive knowledge and experience in equity\, diversity\, and inclusion. These experts will guide you through essential areas such as identity\, belonging\, intersectionality\, legal requirements\, and leadership strategies that will empower you in your role. By exploring both theoretical frameworks and practical applications\, this course will equip you with the skills and confidence necessary to drive meaningful change in your school. \n\nThe Why\, What\, and How of Leading Diversity\, Equity and Inclusivity in your school \nSome key foundational considerations under the why\, what and how of your role which will help to position you as an effective and impactful Inclusion lead.  This session will cover various themes such as: \n\nthe importance of now\nestablishing definitions\nthe biggest misconceptions\nconnecting the dots of your strategy\, from audit to action plan\n\nSpeaker:  Temi Akindele Barker\, Founder\, Inclusion Labs \nTemi began her career as a consultant in Legal Executive Search\, both in the UK and internationally\, eventually becoming Co-Head of the Senior Team covering US and UK law firms\, and US financial institutions. A key part of her role involved supporting local and multinational clients to achieve their strategic  goals.  Prior to Inclusion Labs\, she worked in Strategy and Research with a focus  on start-ups.  Temi is a mum of two daughters and committed to helping schools  ask the right questions and focus on the important things when it comes to  diversity\, equity and inclusion.  Inclusion Labs offers a custom programme for schools\, grounded in research and best practice\, but most importantly on the lived experience of students and families\, particularly those from underrepresented groups. \n\nUnderstanding Equality and the Law \nThis session will cover the various elements of equality included within English legislation and the obligations they place on organisations. It will also consider whether the protections are adequate and whether they allow Schools to genuinely demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusivity. \nSpeaker:  Gemma Woodhouse\, Partner\, Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP \nGemma is an employment partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper. She advises organisations on all elements of employment law including discrimination and equal opportunities. She also works with a number of independent schools and is joint Head of the Penningtons Manches Cooper Schools Sector. \n  \nDelivering equitable outcomes \nSpeaker: Yasmina Kone\, Hemisphere Education \nYasmina is Deputy Lead of Hemisphere Education. She’s an award-winning start-up operator that’s worked with some of the UK’s top corporate and start-up companies. Her social impact work has seen her feature in the BBC\, Black Tech Fest and Busy Being Black Podcast\, and her clients have included FTSE500 companies where she’s helped to open access to minority groups and use business as force for good. She’s passionate about the impact that the education sector can have on creating a more inclusive society and is leading on Hemisphere Education’s adoption in UK schools. \n\nLeadership Challenges and Opportunities \nHow can you lead as effectively as possible\, building capacity and confidence so that others move forward and achieve all they can? This session will explore the challenges that leadership presents\, alongside the opportunities it can offer\, and how you can make the most of them. \n\nCase studies\, Discussion and Next Steps  \nThis session will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand from school leaders about EDI work in their schools. The case studies will cover a range of different areas from the importance of pupil voice to recruitment. Participants will then have the chance to meet and discuss EDI work in their schools with other Inclusion Lead colleagues (in small zoom break out groups). To end the day\, we will briefly consider next steps and things to be researching or thinking about before the second day of this course. \n\nEquity\, Diversity and Inclusion: Safeguarding and Inspection \nThis session will look at safeguarding with an equity\, diversity and inclusion lens and will consider key inspection requirements. \n \nSpeaker:  Dale Wilkins\, Senior Director\, BSA and BSA Group \nDale joined the BSA during Summer 2017 with responsibility for safeguarding and standards. In July 2019 he also assumed responsibility for the BSA’s training programme\, including both day seminars and accredited training courses. Dale leads on all safeguarding and inspection matters for the BSA\, including managing the Commitment to Care Charter and has also developed a process of BSA Accreditation for our international members. \nFor 31 years Dale was a boarding practitioner. After boarding positions at Norwich School and Tettenhall College\, Dale became a Housemaster at Old Swinford Hospital in 1992\, and was promoted to Deputy Head in 2007\, and subsequently also DSL. He has also been a multi-agency trainer for the Dudley Safeguarding Children’s Board and has been closely involved in inspection in state and independent boarding since 2002. Dale had previously been a BSA course tutor since 1998 and developed the BSA Self-Assessment Toolkit\, which was updated in 2022. \n\nIdentity\, Belonging and Connectedness.  \nThis session will explore the notions of identity\, belonging and connectedness. Speaker will share stories of identity and belonging as well as her experiences of working with young people in schools. How do our different and often intersecting identities shape our capacity to belong and connect and how can schools provide an environment where connectedness thrives? \n\nCase Studies\, Discussion and Closing Remarks \nThis session will be similar to the one at the end of day 1 in that it will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand from school leaders about EDI work in their schools. The case studies will cover a range of different areas to complement those discussed on day 1. Participants will then have the chance to meet and discuss EDI work in their schools with other Inclusion Lead colleagues (in small zoom break out groups). The day will close with an opportunity to reflect on the how\, the why and the what of the Inclusion lead role and moving forward in an effective and impactful way. \nSpeaker: Sadia Hussain-Savuk\, DEI Lead\, Fettes College\, Edinburgh and Independent EDI educational consultant \nSadia is the DEI Lead at Fettes College\, also working independently to provide DEI support to support to other independent schools in Scotland.  She started her teaching career in 2008 as a Biology teacher after having initially worked for the NHS as a scientist. Her interests and passions led her into pastoral support\, where she then recognised the need for more inclusive practices in education. \n  \n\nCultural Competence and Supporting International Students \n \nSpeaker: Sara Thomas\, Assistant Head of School\, leading on wellbeing\, at ACS Cobham \nSara Thomas is the Assistant Head of School\, leading on wellbeing\, at ACS Cobham. She oversees the boarding houses\, medical centre\, safeguarding team\, student services\, and the pastoral systems at the school. Originally a languages teacher (French\, Welsh\, English & Spanish)\, Sara’s other previous roles include Head of Welsh Baccalaureate\, Head of Sixth Form and Deputy Headteacher. She has worked in a variety of schools both in the UK and abroad. \n  \n \nSpeaker: Naomi Angelica Vibrati\, Lead School Counsellor and a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at ACS Cobham \nNaomi Angelica Vibrati is the Lead School Counsellor and a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at ACS Cobham. She supports students in middle school and collaborates with families\, internal and external professionals . Her background is in supporting children\, young people and adults therapeutically through systemic family therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. However\, the very qualities that make prefects effective—confidence\, influence and leadership presence—can also create risks if not supported by strong moral judgement and appropriate supervision. \nThis interactive seminar explores the concept of the Prefect Paradox: balancing delegated authority with safeguarding responsibilities to ensure prefect systems positively influence boarding communities. Delegates will examine how boarding schools can move beyond selecting either the “most popular” or the “safest” candidate by adopting a character-led approach to leadership development. \nDrawing on the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues’ framework\, the session introduces practical approaches to character education\, virtue literacy and the concept of practical wisdom (phronesis). DESCRIPTION:🏷️ From £175\n📍 Online \n\nCourse outline \nThis training has been especially designed for BSA members as a follow up to CBT introduction: tools and strategies. Our speaker will take delegates further into the study of CBT practices and how we can use these to support young people in establishing resilience\, self-confidence and manage stress and negative feelings. \nThis one-day course is for delegates who have been using some Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches in their work. This course will be an opportunity to develop and extend the skills of delegates who have started to apply some CBT tools in their work. The session will be bespoke and designed to build on the skills delegates are already using\, and introduce new tools to utilise. Delegates will leave the session with new skills and tools to extend their work and skills when working with individuals\, small groups and whole classes/houses. Delegates will also have the opportunity to raise specific areas where they would like to develop their skills which will be addressed e.g.\, wanting to use CBT tools with a wider range of young people\, to address different needs e.g.\, exam anxiety\, perfectionism\, peer relationships\, self-esteem\, social media use. \nWho is this course for? \n\nDelegates who have previously attended: CBT introduction – tools and strategies\nDelegates who are already using some aspects of CBT in their work. DESCRIPTION:🏷️ From £135\n🎧 Senior Leaders\, EDI leads\, SENCOs\, all staff with an interest in inclusion\n📍 Online\n🎥 Watch live or catch up\n\n\n\nCourse Outline: \nThe aim of this half day seminar is to provide an opportunity to learn more about the importance of the management system of the brain – known as executive functioning skills and to consider strategies that can be used to support pupils.  \nTraining Topics Include: \n\nThe three main areas of working memory\, cognitive flexibility (flexible thinking) and inhibitory control (including self-control) will be unpacked. When people struggle with executive function\, it impacts them at home\, in school\, and in life because the skills involved support goal setting\, planning\, and completing tasks. \nExecutive function is responsible for many skills including: paying attention; organizing\, planning\, and prioritising; starting tasks and staying focused on them to completion; understanding different points of view; regulating emotions and self-monitoring. Executive functioning skills usually develop quickly in early childhood and into the teen years but are still developing into the mid-20s. Some people struggle with EF\, and this can cause challenges during childhood\, as a teenager and young adult. \nWe will hear from an EF expert about what executive function skills are and how they impact our lives. We will also hear directly from school staff about adjustments and proactive work that has made a positive impact in their settings. \n\nLearning Outcomes: \n\nAttending this half day seminar will help delegates increase their knowledge and understanding of the importance of supporting executive functioning for all pupils\, but particularly for those who have weaker EF function. We pride ourselves on having strong communities within our schools but this means we need to be considerate and conscientious in welcoming and inducting people. Suggestions and ideas will be shared to encourage delegates to review the induction processes for both new staff and new students. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe benefits of a strong induction programme\nInduction for new staff to the boarding community/house\nInduction for new boarders to the boarding community/house\nThe wider school induction.\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn increased understanding of the importance of a successful induction for both students and staff\nTips and recommendations on what to include in your induction process for students\nTips and recommendations on what to include in your induction process for staff.\n\nBOOK NOW \nSpeaker: \nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.
