With extensive experience in inclusive education\, she supports educators to create equitable learning environments for all learners. Her research explores inclusion and exclusion in global contexts\, addressing gender\, disability\, and cultural diversity in teaching and policy. Combining research and practice\, Wendy has contributed to curriculum development\, teacher training\, and international collaborations promoting inclusive pedagogies. Passionate about empowering educators\, she lectures on inclusive practice\, intersectionality\, and global perspectives\, driving positive change through research-informed teaching and advocacy for equity in education. \n\nTom Hunt\, Associate Psychology Professor\, The University of Derby  \nTom Hunt is an Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of Derby. He leads the Mathematics Anxiety Research Group (www.marg.wp.derby.ac.uk)\, focusing on the causes and consequences of maths anxiety\, how it can be measured\, and ways it can be reduced. Tom regularly works as a consultant for a range of organisations and has published several research papers and book chapters on the topic of maths anxiety. More recently\, he is co-author of the book Maths anxiety: Solving the equation. \n\n\nJulia Trickey\, PGCE Primary Education Programme Leader\, The University of Derby  \nJulia Trickey is Programme Leader for the PGCE Primary Education with QTS at the University of Derby\, UK. With 25 years’ experience in Primary Education\, she has worked as a class teacher and SENCo and now leads across the ITT/E provision at Derby\, focusing on SEND and Inclusion. Her Masters in Education from Boston University\, Massachusetts\, centred on developmental studies in Literacy\, applying strategies to promote inclusive practice and engage reluctant readers. Across a range of educational settings\, Julia is driven to inspire beginning teachers to recognise\, implement and champion adaptive practice to meet all learners’ needs. \n\nKayte Haselgrove\, Post-14 FE & Skills ITE Programmes Programme Lead\, The University of Derby  \nKayte has worked in the Further Education and Skills sector since 2009\, beginning in tutorial and pastoral care before moving into teaching English\, maths\, and IT. She has held roles including Advanced Practitioner\, Subject Leader\, and Head of Department for English and maths\, as well as Head of Teaching and Learning. Through her business\, EduKayte\, she has delivered professional development nationwide\, representing organisations such as the Education and Training Foundation. Now Programme Lead for Post-14 FE and Skills ITE at the University of Derby\, Kayte also serves as an LSRN Co-Chair\, BERA Convenor\, and PhD researcher in Education. \n\nAdam Brett\, Lecturer and Researcher\, Doctor of Education Programme Assistant Lead\, The University of Derby  \nDr Adam Brett is a lecturer and researcher at the University of Derby and the Assistant Programme Leader for the Doctor of Education programme. These in-person Leadership events will be held at CBL partner BSA member schools in different parts of the UK. Typical Lessons in Leadership events will be for around a dozen delegates.  \nDate: Thursday February 4\, 2027 \nTimings: 18:00 – 21:00 \nVenue: Canford School\, Canford Magna\, Wimborne\, Dorset\, BH21 3AD \nA drinks reception will be hosted\, complemented by an assortment of Mediterranean sharing platters\n  \nSession Topic : Lessons in Leadership with Minette Batters \nSpeaker \n \nThe Baroness Batters DL \nThe Baroness Batters DL (Minette Batters) was the first woman to be elected President of the National Farmers’ Union in 113yrs. She’s represented the interests of over 46\,000 farming businesses across England and Wales through unprecedented times\, navigating the challenges of Brexit\, Covid 19 and the war in Ukraine. During this time\, she worked with four Prime Ministers – three of them in one year – and six Defra Secretaries of State. She stood down from the post in February 2024. \nCampaigning about the importance of British food and farming and its ability to achieve Net Zero has been a key driver for Minette. In 2020 she led the NFU on one of the most successful campaigns ever seen\, bringing together a coalition of chefs\, including Jamie Oliver\, farmers\, environmentalists\, consumer groups and animal welfare experts – resulting in over one million people signing the NFU food standards petition. Minette also co-founded ‘Ladies in Beef’ and the Great British Beef Week. She has regularly engaged with different media\, including frequent appearances on the ‘Today’ programme\, ‘Question Time’\, ‘Any Questions’\, ‘Desert Island Discs’\, Woman’s Hour and other national print and broadcast media. She is currently writing a monthly piece for Country Life magazine. \nMinette is mother to twins and is a tenant farmer\, on the Longford Estate near Salisbury\, Wiltshire. She began farming in 1998 having sold her house and negotiated the farm business tenancy\, starting with fifteen beef cows but fulfilling a lifetime ambition to farm. Today the farm has a Spring and Autumn calving Aberdeen Angus beef herd\, arable crops and a few sheep. The business is widely diversified\, with a wedding and events venue in a 17th century tithe barn\, holiday cottages\, and winter grazing for polo ponies\, alongside a recently restored walled garden growing native British flowers. Minette trained as a Cordon Bleu chef\, and was a former amateur jockey\, riding 30 point to point winners\, alongside working for champion National Hunt racehorse trainer David Elsworth. \nShe’s an ambassador for Farm Africa and a passionate advocate and fundraiser for the Junior Diabetic Research Foundation. She’s run in four marathons\, raising over £100\,000 for charity. In 2021 Minette was made a Deputy Lieutenant to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth\, and in July 2024 she was made a Crossbench Peer in the House of Lords. Minette was assigned\, by means of a Direct Ministerial Appointment by the Rt Hon Steve Reed MP\, to lead a review of farm profitability for Defra. This review ran from April 2025 until the end of October 2025\, and reported back to the Rt Hon Emma Reynolds MP. \nHost \nRobin Fletcher\, Chief Executive \nRobin Fletcher is CEO of Abitas Group\, comprising BAISIS (British Association of Independent Schools with International Students)\, BSA (Boarding Schools’ Association)\, BSA Legal\, HIEDA (Health in Education Association) SACPA (Safeguarding and Child Protection Association) and TIOB (The Institute of Boarding). However\, staff CPD opportunities seldom focus on these key areas. \n As part of a refocus of the training available through the BSA Group and Hieda\, we can now offer a standalone Professional Practice Certificate for school staff on medical matters. \nThis course will link professional practice with current research and best practice to provide a unique opportunity for non-registered medical staff\, whether working in relative isolation or as part of the medical team\, to develop their knowledge\, skills and practice across a wide range of the key current themes/topics most relevant to their role. In addition\, there will be a linked project which will provide the chance to focus on a specific aspect in more detail. \nThe course is tutor-led and will consist of three separate live online study days spread over a full academic year. She now specialises in school medicine and is the lead nurse at Harrow school medical centre. \nSinead’s aim is to improve the health literacy of her pupils and empower them to utilise the variety of health and wellbeing services available to them. Students will be encouraged to contribute ideas\, opinions and questions\, taking responsibility for their own learning\, whilst contributing to the learning of the group as a whole. \nThe course is run by senior members of the SACPA staff.  Each delegate will have an experienced SACPA Tutor who attends the study days. \nCourse Assessment \nDelegates may choose assessment via portfolio or assignment. \nMaria Putz : Interim Head of Training (Sexual Violence and Safeguarding) \nMaria joined LimeCulture in January 2019 as one of the Training Managers. Maria has been involved in the development and delivery of Preventing Sexual Misconduct Education (PSME) and the Sexual Misconduct Liaison Officer (SMLO) Model helping schools and colleges to create a whole school approach in their prevention and response to sexual misconduct.  Maria has also presented nationally and internationally with a focus on healthy relationships and safeguarding in sport. Maria is committed to improving services for those affected by Sexual Violence through building knowledge\, confidence and skills in frontline workers. \nMost recently Maria has become the interim Head of Training leading in the development and delivery of training for LimeCulture in their Sexual Violence\, Safeguarding\, Education and University work. \nPrior to joining the LimeCulture Team she was a specialist-safeguarding nurse for the largest children’s hospital in the UK. She has also worked as an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA) and a Crisis Worker at a Sexual Assault Referral Centre. \n\nKarl Hopwood : E-Safety Expert \nKarl Hopwood is an esafety expert. He is a member of UKCCIS (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and sits on the advisory board for the new UK Safer Internet Centre. Karl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre)\, BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology Agency)\, the European Commission and several Local Authorities within the UK. As an ex headteacher\, he continues to work closely with children\, young people\, parents and teachers to develop safer online behaviours and the promotion of digital literacy. Karl works closely with the Boarding Schools’ Association and supports many of their schools. He is also an in-house consultant for INSAFE which is the coordinating node of the EU safer internet programme. \n  \n\nMarcus Erooga : Independent Safeguarding Consultant \nMarcus is an independent safeguarding and sexual abuse Consultant\, Researcher & Trainer. From 1999-2018 he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield Centre for Applied Childhood\, Youth and Family Studies. He spent the majority of his employed career in various positions at the NSPCC\, as a practitioner\, team manager and Assistant Director for service delivery as well as service and policy development roles relating to child sexual abuse and sexual offending. \nHe has authored or edited some 80 publications on child abuse and sex offender related issues. Most recently this work has focused on organisational safeguarding. In 2016 he co-authored a review of the literature on organisational risk & protective factors for the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse as well as being Expert Witness on grooming in a Royal Commission Case Study. He is an Expert Witness for the IICSA (the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse) Residential Schools inquiry. \nAs an independent consultant Marcus regularly trains and presents based on his research and undertakes safeguarding work including audits & reviews for a range of organisations. Marcus is a past Editor in Chief of the Journal of Sexual Aggression and a past Chair of NOTA (the National Organisation for the Treatment of Abuse) and is now a NOTA Fellow.

You will be encouraged to contribute ideas\, opinions and questions\, take responsibility for your own learning and\, by sharing\, to contribute to the learning of the group as a whole. \nBetween sessions you will be expected to do some reading\, thinking and discussing with colleagues in your school and with your mentor. Before each study day\, you will be expected to spend some time on the preparatory tasks in the course booklet and using the course sessions reflect on your own boarding school situation. The follow up tasks will help you to focus on practical ways of applying ideas and theories in the boarding setting. \nYou will also be required to keep a professional file during the course containing brief notes\, ideas\, action points\, and activities and issues to take back to the workplace. The course booklet will give you a number of relevant tasks to think about\, providing opportunities to record your thoughts. This file is itself not directly assessed but will provide essential material to draw upon when you write up your chosen assessment topic. \nThe Course Assignment is a written project of ~2500 words on a topic directly related to the pastoral care/management of international students. The topic will benefit both the student and their school in developing their understanding of best practice in relation to supporting international students. Guidance on selecting a suitable topic\, and on how to write up and submit the assignment will be provided in the course booklet and by the tutors on the course. \nMain course sessions include: \nThe Pastoral Care & Boarding Wellbeing of International Students \nDeveloping strategies and practice \nIntegration and the whole school approach \nNOTE: Students will need attend all study days and successfully complete the assignment in order to gain the course certificate. \nWhat support will I receive during the course? \nYou will receive support throughout the course from the BSA\, the course tutor and from your school mentor. \nCourse tutors \nYour BSA course tutor will be a senior member of staff with considerable experience in boarding education. He or she will: \n● provide personal and professional help and encouragement; \n● work with you in discussion groups and tutorial sessions during the course; \n● liaise with your school mentor; \n● review and provide feedback on your proposed assessment task; \n● advise and support you with your assignment and review progress regularly; \n● mark your assignment. \n  \nElyse Conlon\nInternational Director at Moreton Hall School \nElyse Conlon is International Director at Moreton Hall School\, Shropshire and has worked at Moreton for 13 years in roles such as Teacher of GCSE English\,  Head of EAL\, and Director of Studies for their renowned International Study Centre and Summer School programme. \nElyse was previously involved in admissions in a high-performing overseas school\, was Deputy Chair of BAISIS (British Association for Independent Schools with International Students) for three years\, and is also delighted to continue her training role with the Boarding Schools Association designing and delivering accredited courses to school staff in independent schools both overseas and in the UK. \nElyse has always been inspired by meaningful and practical international CPD with post graduate degrees in international education \, applied linguistics and human resource management. By exploring both theoretical frameworks and practical applications\, this course will equip you with the skills and confidence necessary to drive meaningful change in your school. \n\nThe Why\, What\, and How of Leading Diversity\, Equity and Inclusivity in your school \nSome key foundational considerations under the why\, what and how of your role which will help to position you as an effective and impactful Inclusion lead.  This session will cover various themes such as: \n\nthe importance of now\nestablishing definitions\nthe biggest misconceptions\nconnecting the dots of your strategy\, from audit to action plan\n\nSpeaker:  Temi Akindele Barker\, Founder\, Inclusion Labs \nTemi began her career as a consultant in Legal Executive Search\, both in the UK and internationally\, eventually becoming Co-Head of the Senior Team covering US and UK law firms\, and US financial institutions. A key part of her role involved supporting local and multinational clients to achieve their strategic  goals.  Prior to Inclusion Labs\, she worked in Strategy and Research with a focus  on start-ups.  Temi is a mum of two daughters and committed to helping schools  ask the right questions and focus on the important things when it comes to  diversity\, equity and inclusion.  Inclusion Labs offers a custom programme for schools\, grounded in research and best practice\, but most importantly on the lived experience of students and families\, particularly those from underrepresented groups. \n\nUnderstanding Equality and the Law \nThis session will cover the various elements of equality included within English legislation and the obligations they place on organisations. It will also consider whether the protections are adequate and whether they allow Schools to genuinely demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusivity. \nSpeaker:  Gemma Woodhouse\, Partner\, Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP \nGemma is an employment partner at Penningtons Manches Cooper. She advises organisations on all elements of employment law including discrimination and equal opportunities. She also works with a number of independent schools and is joint Head of the Penningtons Manches Cooper Schools Sector. \n  \nDelivering equitable outcomes \nSpeaker: Yasmina Kone\, Hemisphere Education \nYasmina is Deputy Lead of Hemisphere Education. She’s an award-winning start-up operator that’s worked with some of the UK’s top corporate and start-up companies. Her social impact work has seen her feature in the BBC\, Black Tech Fest and Busy Being Black Podcast\, and her clients have included FTSE500 companies where she’s helped to open access to minority groups and use business as force for good. She’s passionate about the impact that the education sector can have on creating a more inclusive society and is leading on Hemisphere Education’s adoption in UK schools. \n\nLeadership Challenges and Opportunities \nHow can you lead as effectively as possible\, building capacity and confidence so that others move forward and achieve all they can? This session will explore the challenges that leadership presents\, alongside the opportunities it can offer\, and how you can make the most of them. \n\nCase studies\, Discussion and Next Steps  \nThis session will provide an opportunity to hear first-hand from school leaders about EDI work in their schools. The case studies will cover a range of different areas from the importance of pupil voice to recruitment. Participants will then have the chance to meet and discuss EDI work in their schools with other Inclusion Lead colleagues (in small zoom break out groups). The case studies will cover a range of different areas to complement those discussed on day 1. Participants will then have the chance to meet and discuss EDI work in their schools with other Inclusion Lead colleagues (in small zoom break out groups). The day will close with an opportunity to reflect on the how\, the why and the what of the Inclusion lead role and moving forward in an effective and impactful way. \nSpeaker: Sadia Hussain-Savuk\, DEI Lead\, Fettes College\, Edinburgh and Independent EDI educational consultant \nSadia is the DEI Lead at Fettes College\, also working independently to provide DEI support to support to other independent schools in Scotland.  She started her teaching career in 2008 as a Biology teacher after having initially worked for the NHS as a scientist. Her interests and passions led her into pastoral support\, where she then recognised the need for more inclusive practices in education. \n  \n\nCultural Competence and Supporting International Students \n \nSpeaker: Sara Thomas\, Assistant Head of School\, leading on wellbeing\, at ACS Cobham \nSara Thomas is the Assistant Head of School\, leading on wellbeing\, at ACS Cobham. She oversees the boarding houses\, medical centre\, safeguarding team\, student services\, and the pastoral systems at the school. Originally a languages teacher (French\, Welsh\, English & Spanish)\, Sara’s other previous roles include Head of Welsh Baccalaureate\, Head of Sixth Form and Deputy Headteacher. She has worked in a variety of schools both in the UK and abroad. \n  \n \nSpeaker: Naomi Angelica Vibrati\, Lead School Counsellor and a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at ACS Cobham \nNaomi Angelica Vibrati is the Lead School Counsellor and a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at ACS Cobham. She supports students in middle school and collaborates with families\, internal and external professionals . Her background is in supporting children\, young people and adults therapeutically through systemic family therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy.
