DESCRIPTION:Date: January 17\, 2025\n\n\n\nTime: 10:30 – 12:30\n\n\n\nCost: SACPA/BAISIS/BSA member – £135\, BSA Affiliate Member – £170\, Non-member – £270\n\n\n\nAudience: All staff involved in summer school programmes\, both day and residential\, that welcomes international students\n\n\n\nPlatform: Zoom (online)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse Outline: \n\n\n\nThis seminar\, designed specifically for summer school staff working with international students\, will equip you with the essential knowledge and tools to create a safe and inclusive environment for the students joining your summer school programme. Safeguarding should be a priority and all staff involved in the summer school provision should understand what safeguarding means in practical terms\, but also what it means from a child-centred approach. This seminar will highlight the key safeguarding information required by practitioners\, and also give insight into the specific needs to best safeguard international students. \n\n\n\nTraining topics will include: \n\n\n\n\nSafeguarding and your Duty of Care\n\n\n\nUnderstanding and following safeguarding policies\, procedures and ensuring you follow a robust safeguarding framework\n\n\n\nThe unique needs of international students: language barriers\, cultural differences and homesickness\n\n\n\nIdentifying and responding to a safeguarding concern.\n\n\n\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\n\n\n\nGain a comprehensive understanding of safeguarding principles and requirements and their application in a summer school environment\n\n\n\nDevelop cultural sensitivity and communication skills to better connect with and support students\n\n\n\nImprove your confidence in identifying and responding to a safeguarding concern\n\n\n\nEnsuring compliance with UK safeguarding regulations and legal obligations.\n\n\n\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nSpeaker: \n \nBethan Waddington\, Director of Programmes and BAISIS \nBethan Waddington joined the BSA team as Training Manager in September 2017. Bethan has worked in two independent boarding schools in the UK and Switzerland\, the latter as Housemistress to 36 pupils. Following her time in Switzerland\, she was a Pastoral Manager for an inner-city state academy before working in the charity sector for Debrett’s running the ‘Debrett’s Foundation’ training programme. \nIn her role\, Bethan plans and manages all Day Seminars\, Conferences\, INSET and Consultancy\, as well as being Director of BAISIS. She believes boarding can be a positive force for young people and in order to fully support their needs staff can never learn too much. As such she is passionate about the CPD BSA delivers to our pastoral communities in the UK and worldwide. \n \nClaire Dan\, Director of Safeguarding\, BSA Group and Director\, SACPA \nClaire is Director of Safeguarding and Director\, Sacpa and leads on the provision of safeguarding advice and support to members and the development and delivery of CPD and safeguarding consultancy services. Claire is a safeguarding specialist and leader with a background in education welfare\, youth justice\, and early help contexts which have involved a strong focus on diverse and collaborative partnerships\, professional development and supervision of front-line safeguarding colleagues\, and leading multi-disciplinary teams and projects. Between 2006 and 2013 Claire was involved with Luton Safeguarding Children Board as a lead multi-agency safeguarding trainer\, developing and delivering single and multi-agency safeguarding training\, and since 2013 has delivered pieces of bespoke consultancy work\, and providing a range of safeguarding consultancy on a freelance basis.

SUMMARY:Induction training for GAP assistants
DESCRIPTION:Date: January 17\, 2025\nTime: 10:30 – 15:30\nCost: BSA Full Member – £175\, BSA Affiliate Member – £ 250\, Non-member – £350\nAudience: GAP assistants\nPlatform: Zoom (online) – seminar\n\n\nCourse outline: \nThe level of professionalism in boarding supervision has risen dramatically in recent years\, due in part\, to improve lead regulation and increased parental expectation. The sooner your new GAP assistants have a real understanding of the basic principles and expectations of their role in boarding and understand their safeguarding responsibilities\, the sooner the school will have effective staff members and teams who enjoy their duties\, feel able to support young people in their care and deal with any challenges. \nThis seminar will compliment a school-based induction and enable your new GAP assistants to have the knowledge and skills to make the best possible start to their boarding role. As young people themselves\, it is crucial schools recruiting GAP assistants support with a quality induction and training to get their GAP assistants settled. \nThis seminar will cover relevant aspects of the Duty of Care framework\, legal context\, roles and boundaries\, and ways in which delegates can meet the emotional needs of the boarders in their care. By the end of the session\, delegates should feel more confident in their role and be looking forward to enjoying their time on duty in their boarding house. \nDelegates will be provided with a workbook including core information relating to boarding and safeguarding for their year involved in the boarding sector. It is recommended that delegates have familiarised themselves with their schools’ boarding handbook and/or visited the pages relating to boarding on the schools’ website. \nTraining topics will include: \n\nThe legal framework and Duty of Care – this session will explore current boarding practice with particular focus on safeguarding and the legal and inspection requirements of pastoral care in our schools\nMeeting the needs of the boarders – practical case studies will be used to explore the issues that arise every day in boarding\, and suggest ways in which these issues can be dealt with effectively and with confidence by those in a Graduate or GAP assistant position\nUnderstanding your role in boarding – in this session the group will discuss and explore the expectations of the school\, the boarding house\, parents\, along with your own expectations with regards your boarding role in the school\nWorking safely and looking after yourself – some hints and tips on keeping yourself healthy\, safe and enjoying your role in boarding!\n\nLearning outcomes: \n\nAn understanding of the principles and expectations of boarding\, stake holders\, and the role of the GAP assistant within that\nAn increased confidence to be able to support their boarding team in meeting the needs of the boarders in their care\nIncreased awareness of the legal context and country-specific compliance framework\nRecommendations and reasons for best practice and looking after yourself\, setting professional boundaries and working as a team.\n\nBOOK NOW \n\nMark Robinson\, BSA Senior Consultant \nMark has a Product Design Degree from Brunel University and a PGCE. His first post in independent education was as Assistant Master at Christ’s Hospital in Horsham where he held several positions including Assistant Housemaster to a junior boy’s boarding house. After five years he moved on to Ardingly College in West Sussex as a Head of Department and Housemaster to a joint day and boarding house. Mark has been an inspector on boarding inspections\, an Assistant Housemaster to a girls’ boarding house and fully involved in teaching up to ‘A‘ Level. \nIn 2002 Mark gave up teaching to set up Mentor Education Services Ltd\, a business offering education-related consultancy services to the independent sector\, initially training\, interview coaching and professional development but also marketing and pre-inspection to schools both in the independent and maintained sector. \nMark was appointed as Assistant Director of Training for the Boarding Schools’ Association in 2010\, where he continued offering training and consultancy to independent and state schools both in the UK and around the world. In 2017 he was appointed as Deputy Head Pastoral at Collège du Léman in Switzerland\, a large international boarding and day school. After gaining some further\, valuable international experience\, Mark returned to the UK to continue his training and consultancy in the Independent and state school sectors.
