Maria Wakefield, Senior Policy Advisor, Department for Education

I am currently working as a Senior Policy Advisor with the Department for Education on the Teacher Regulation, School Safeguarding and Safety Team. My team deliver a range of policies, which aim to safeguard children in all schools and colleges and my role gives me joint responsibility, alongside colleagues, for the statutory guidance ‘Keeping children safe in education’ (KCSIE). All schools and colleges must have regard to KCSIE when carrying out their duties to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. This guidance provides governing bodies and proprietors with best practice advice on the management of safeguarding, to enable teachers to feel confident supporting pupils.

I am relatively new to this role and recently worked as a serious organised intelligence analyst with HMPPS. Prior to this, I held various roles with other civil service departments, including the Department for Works and Pensions; Child Support Agency; Disclosure and Barring Service. These roles have included complex casework; complaints handling and Human Resources. I have a passion for safeguarding and protecting others, which has hopefully been reflected in my career choices and the roles I have undertaken.

Denise Jolly, Senior Officer, Regulation, Social Care Policy, Ofsted

I have worked for Ofsted for about ten years, and for the policy team for six. A social worker, with a background in working with disabled children, residential schools and in local authority children’s services. In Ofsted, I carry out some inspection of schools, and develop policy and guidance for schools inspection, liaising with education colleagues to develop policies for aligned and integrated work.
