BSA statement: 15.6.22

Posted: 15th June 2022

BSA statement in response to The Times article ‘I was abused at boarding school. Will children like me ever be safe?’ published today (15/6):

“The Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) and our members are deeply sorry for anyone who has been a victim of abuse, we are clear this behaviour will not be tolerated in our sector. Our schools condemn any form of abuse and urge anyone who has been affected to get in touch with the authorities.

“Members work tirelessly to implement rigorous recruitment checks, run regular safeguarding training and awareness raising with staff and pupils and are by no means complacent, taking the view ‘it can happen here’ to ensure they are always alert to the possibility of abuse.

“In today’s Times (June 15, 2022), Alex Renton’s article ‘I was abused at boarding school. Will children like me ever be safe?’ (June 15, 2022) is an important issue to highlight.

“BSA supports the call to implement mandatory reporting of abuse and works with survivors and our member schools to continue to drive up safeguarding standards and make every school as safe as it can be for our pupils.”
